Chapter 5Finn’s car is messy. The outside is covered with a fine layer of sand, and tiny patches of rust run along the edges of the doors on both sides. On top sits a rack to hold surfboards, which looks pretty new compared to the car. The backseat is filled with towels, sandals, a wetsuit, and a pair of board shorts. On the passenger seat are crumpled-up fast food bags, which Finn quickly gathers up and tosses into a trash can where he parked. “Sorry,” he says hurriedly as he tidies things up, “I guess since I’m usually the only one in my car, I kind of let it get out of control.” “So, it’s yours?” “Yeah, all mine.” He pats the dashboard. “I started saving money about a year after I got into surfing, the summer after my freshman year.
