SERENA “Did you have fun last night?” she asked, stepping inside. “He must have been a wild one, isn’t he?” Her eyes darted at my torn clothes. There were red marks on my fair skin. That bastard. “I don't see any harm if I choose to have some fun? Step aside, Alina, I have a meeting to attend I said with confidence. Meanwhile, her gaze persisted on my body. Alina circled me while chuckling. It gave me goosebumps. Alina and I haven't been the best sisters. I mean twin sisters, and I understand why she hated me so much. I was going to become the next Alpha. The day father dropped the bomb, Alina shattered. I saw the hatred in her eyes. And since that day she's been doing everything to get me out of the way. Although I had explained countless times, I had no interest in becoming the Alpha. “I can guess the man whom you shamelessly f****d all night.” My heart skipped a beat. My throat as well went dry. I could feel my palms sweating. Alina couldn't possibly know about this? “You f****d with Kade veylor. Father's sworn enemy. Don’t bother lying.” Her eyes glinted as she continued speaking. “I’m the one who set you up.” The words made me blink. “You… what?” Her voice dropped lower, all traces of amusement gone. “You’ve had the Alpha title waiting for you since birth, Serena. Everyone’s just assumed it would be you. But I want it.” I shook my head, gripping the blanket tighter. “So you—” “I made sure you ended up in his bed last night,” she said, cutting me off. “And now I have proof. Step down, or I’ll tell Father exactly what happened. And when I do, the entire pack will know you slept with the man he hates most.” I stared at her, my throat dry. “You’d do that to me?” Her gaze didn’t waver. “I’d do whatever it takes to be Alpha.” Silence stretched between us. I could hear my own heartbeat. “You have until the next full moon,” she said finally. Then she pushed away from the desk and headed for the door. “Think carefully, sister.” The door shut behind her. For a moment I just stood there, staring at the empty doorway. My hands were shaking. I forced myself to move, pulling on my clothes in a rush. There was no time to dwell on her words. I was already late for the board meeting. *** By the time I reached the boardroom, the meeting had already started. The heavy wooden doors closed behind me with a dull thud. All eyes turned in my direction. “What took you so long?” Father’s voice cut through the air. His tone was sharp, leaving no room for excuses. “I’m sorry,” I said quickly, sliding into my chair. The long conference table was lined with pack leaders and senior advisors. Some looked bored, others annoyed. Father’s eyes stayed on me for a moment longer before he gestured for me to continue with the agenda. I reached for my folder, but my phone buzzed in my pocket. I hesitated, then slid it out under the table. A picture filled the screen. Me, tangled in white sheets, my hair messy, my bare shoulder visible. Next to me—Kade Veylor, asleep, his arm draped across my waist. The photo was taken from the side, close enough to leave no doubt about what it showed. Before I could react, another message popped up. Kade: Hand over the contract to me, or everyone sees this. I swallowed hard, my pulse pounding in my ears. My fingers curled around the phone until my knuckles turned white. Across the table, Father’s voice pulled me back. “Serena. The Mooncrest contract update?” My mouth felt dry. I could feel the weight of every pair of eyes in the room. I glanced once more at my phone. The image was still there. I could almost feel Kade’s threat pressing against my skin. I stood, my notes clutched in one hand. “The Mooncrest contract…” My voice wavered, and I forced myself to steady it. “It will not be awarded to our pack. It has been given to the Ashfang pack.” A ripple of murmurs broke out around the table. Some looked confused, others whispered to their neighbors. Father’s face darkened. “What do you mean it’s been given to the Ashfang pack?” His voice was low but dangerous. I kept my gaze on my notes, not daring to meet his eyes. “Their bid was accepted.” “That makes no sense,” one of the advisors said sharply. “We were told the deal was already leaning in our favor.” Another added, “The Ashfangs don’t even have the resources to handle the project. This is a mistake.” “It’s not a mistake,” I said quietly. Father’s hand slammed against the table. “You were in charge of finalizing that deal. How did this happen?” I forced my shoulders to stay straight. “It was out of my control.” He stared at me for a long moment, his jaw tight. “We will discuss this after the meeting,” he said finally, his voice clipped. The rest of the agenda moved on without me hearing most of it. My mind was stuck on the picture, on Kade’s message, on Alina’s smug face when she left my room. Every time my phone buzzed, my stomach lurched. I didn’t check it again. When the meeting ended, people filed out slowly, their voices low. I stayed in my seat, pretending to organize my papers until the room was almost empty. Father stood near the head of the table, speaking with two of his advisors. His eyes flicked to me once, and I knew I wasn’t off the hook. I slipped my phone back into my pocket and left the room before he could call me over. The hallway felt too quiet, too long. At home I turned on the shower. I don't know which was hotter. The betrayal of my twin sister or my hard earned contract taken away from me. Someone was waiting for me by the door. I stepped “Your father wants to speak to you now.”
