Rollins said it again, quieter, like he didn't want the FBI mics to hear.
"My birthday is June 14th, 1998."
The lake was still draining. The safe was open. Thirty tiny dresses. Thirty birth certificates. All June 14th.
Eleanor, cuffed to the car, hair full of dried concrete now gray, smiled at Rollins like she finally won.
"Patricia didn't tell you? She was House Zero. The first House. 1997. Size 6. Morehouse boy got her pregnant. She was 16. My mother hid her under lake. June 14th, 1998, you were born in House Zero bunker. I cut cord. Patricia went to law school after. You went to foster, then back to her when you were 4. She told you your father died car crash. He didn't. He is Judge Holt. He paid for your college. That's why you can't arrest him. You are his product."
Rollins didn't move. His g*n was on ground now.
Lena grabbed one birth certificate from safe. Father: HOLT. Mother: VOW UNKNOWN. Date: JUNE 14 2006. Baby: LENA CARTER.
"I'm not 2018 House One wife," Lena whispered. "I'm 2006 Vault baby. Mae didn't hide me in 2018. She rescued me from doll house. I was one of Holt's dolls as child. I escaped at 12, lived in woods, came back at 18 as wife to burn it down. I forgot. Trauma. Mae helped me remember in bunker."
Priya picked another. JUNE 14 1999. Baby: PRIYA VOW. Father: WILLIAMS.
"Williams is Kevin's last name," Priya said. "Kevin is... my brother?"
Kevin, on stretcher now at edge of lake, IV in arm, heard it. He sat up.
"My dad had another family. Before my mom. He told me on deathbed. 1999. Lake Lanier. Girl got pregnant, he paid cash, never saw baby. Said baby was June 14th. He said... name was Priya's mother name. I thought he meant my sister..."
FBI agent in charge, woman named Agent Shaw, took safe, closed it.
"Eleanor Vow, you are under federal for 1972-2024 human trafficking, illegal adoption, murder. House Zero is crime scene from 52 years."
Eleanor laughed, concrete dust falling from her head.
"Murder? Who did I murder? Wives left. Babies adopted. I poured concrete over holes, not people. Mae is alive."
Agent Shaw: "We drained lake further. Dive team found second safe, bigger, under first. Cemented to bottom. 1972 safe."
They pulled it. Rusted shut. Cut open.
Inside: Not dresses. Bones. Small. 30 sets? 40? And one adult skeleton, female, with locket. Locket engraved: E. VOW 1972 - MOTHER.
Eleanor's mother. Eleanor poured her own mother under lake in 1972 to take over clinic.
Eleanor stopped laughing.
Simone saw bones and threw up behind FBI car, cuffs still on.
"My grandmother?" Simone whispered.
Eleanor whispered: "She was going to call police. About babies. I was 19. Size 6. She said I was shaming family. I poured House Zero first pour. Her."
Rollins finally stood. Picked up his g*n. Walked to Eleanor.
"My mother was 16," he said. "Your mother was... how old were you when you poured your mother?"
"19," Eleanor said. "Same age as Zuri."
Zuri - me - 2024 House One, standing in mud, holding Imani's hand.
I thought about Kevin in pantry, concrete up to chest. About Mae under concrete breathing. About Mrs. Holt brushing hair 100 strokes. About tiny dresses size 0.
All because one woman in 1972 wanted to hide pregnant girls.
I walked to Eleanor, knelt, so only she could hear.
"Your bunker under lake? House Zero? You wrote names on wall. You wrote LENA 2018 - TRAITOR. You wrote ZURI 2020, PRIYA 2019. But you didn't write 1972. First name. Who was first girl you hid?"
Eleanor looked at lake, at mother's bones, and said: "Me. I was first. 1971. Pregnant with Simone. June 14th, 1972, I gave birth to her in bunker. My mother said sell her. I said no. So I poured my mother and kept my daughter. Simone was supposed to be my legacy, not my business."
Simone heard. Simone stopped throwing up.
"Mom?"
Eleanor looked at Simone, eyes wet for first time.
"I kept you. But you wanted to be daughter track. You wanted company. So I gave you company. I gave you all girls as sisters. Was that wrong?"
Simone didn't answer. She walked to FBI car, sat, head down.
Agent Shaw radioed: "We have judge's wife on phone. She confessed. She burned nothing. Girls alive. She says dolls are daughters. She wants to adopt them legally now that judge arrested. She says June 14th is Mother's Day in her mind."
Judge's wife with dementia, wanting to adopt her prisoners.
Rollins looked at me, at Lena, at Priya, at Imani.
"Zuri, what do you want to do with The Vow? City says you own House One still. Deed is Kevin's but void if trafficking. You can burn it like you burned chair."
I looked at six houses around black lake. Warm lights now off, yellow tape, FBI.
I thought about June 14th tomorrow. My anniversary. My day to be returned. My day to be poured.
I said: "Don't burn. Pour."
Everyone looked.
"Pour concrete over whole lake. Fill it. Bury House Zero, Vault 1972, safe, bones, everything. Then build park. For June 14th babies. Size 6 and size 0. No houses. Just park. With names on wall. Real names. Not return dates."
Lena smiled. First real smile in six years.
Priya said: "And scholarship? Real one this time? For 2025 Imani?"
Imani, 17, hugged me.
Rollins called concrete company - Eleanor's company - seized by FBI.
"One last pour," he said into phone. "On the house."
