POUR

Eleanor didn't look scared to be caught. She looked annoyed, like we were late for book club. "Zuri, you have my safe," she said, shovel over shoulder, standing in desert dust in white linen that cost more than my Spelman tuition. "Simone, get the safe." Simone got out of the van, wrists still red from cuffs, but she walked like she owned Painted Desert Road. Because her mother owned it. Deed in safe, Rollins said - all 40 acres under Judge Holt's wife's name, but paid by Eleanor's concrete company. Rollins had his g*n up again. Third time today. "Eleanor Vow, you are under arrest for trafficking, attempted murder -" Eleanor laughed. "Detective, your mother is on my board. She owns 12% of my company. You arrest me, you arrest your college fund." She wasn't lying. Rollins' mother, Patricia Rollins, Cobb County's most expensive real estate lawyer - her name was on incorporation papers we found in jet safe. House Zero under lake? Patricia helped zone it as "storm shelter." "g*n down, Daniel," a voice behind us. Atlanta PD sergeant who brought van - Rollins' own sergeant - now pointing g*n at Rollins. "Patricia said to bring you home, Daniel. Not Texas." Eleanor had bought Rollins' own backup. Priya stepped forward, holding Imani, the 2025 girl. "Mrs. Vow, you don't have USBs. We have them. FBI is 20 minutes out. They tracked jet. You pour anyone here, you add federal charge." Eleanor looked at Priya, and for first time, her face softened. Just a little. "House Three, 2024. You were my favorite. You read contracts. You asked about page two. That's why I was going to make you daughter track too, like Simone." "I don't want to be your daughter," Priya said, voice shaking but loud. "I want my house back. I paid mortgage on a house that has a hole to bury me." Eleanor sighed, like a mother disappointed. "You all think this is trafficking. It's tradition. My mother did it. 1972. Lake Lanier. She sold wives to men who lost daughters. She kept families together. Judge Holt lost his daughter June 14th, 1998, car crash, size 6 dress for funeral. My mother gave him a new daughter. Then another. It's mercy." Lena came from behind wall, shovel in hand, same shovel she lived with for six years. "Mercy doesn't pour concrete over Mae," Lena said. Eleanor's face went hard. "Mae broke contract. She hid you, Lena. She hid product under lake. House Zero was mine, not hers. She turned it into a rescue. That's theft." She swung shovel. Not at Lena. At the windmill that powered doll house water. CLANG. Pipe burst. Water spraying into desert. Inside doll house, old Mrs. Holt screamed. Not words. A wail. "My dolls will be dirty! They need baths!" The six girls in chairs inside stood up at once, like dolls on strings cut. First girl - original Priya 2019 - ran to window, banged. "Help us! She brushes us! She never lets us sleep! She says we are her daughter!" Zuri 2020 girl cried: "I'm not Zuri! My name is Amara! She renamed me!" They were not compliant. They were prisoners. Dementia wife was not gentle. She was warden. Eleanor used distraction, grabbed me. Strong for 60-year-old. Pulled me toward van where bag of quick concrete waited, water from broken pipe mixing. "House One always gets poured in House One," she whispered in my ear, same voice she used to welcome me with casserole. "But Texas ground is good too. And your husband already set. You can join him." She tried to push my head into bag. Simone watched. Did nothing. Then Imani, 17-year-old 2025 House One, picked up Eleanor's dropped shovel and hit Eleanor in back of head. Not hard enough to kill. Hard enough to drop. Eleanor fell into wet concrete mix, white linen turning gray. Simone finally moved, but not to help mother. She opened van side door, pulled out one more white dress bag. Inside: Not a girl. Inside: $2 million cash. And a deed. "My escape," Simone said to me, breathing hard. "I was going to Marfa, take money, burn doll house, free girls, start new in Mexico. You beat me to it." She threw cash at Mrs. Holt who had come out of doll house now, pink robe, confused, holding hairbrush. "Here! Your husband's money! Let them go!" Mrs. Holt looked at cash, then at girls, then at me, bleeding lip, concrete on hands. "Are you my daughter?" she asked me. "June 14th?" "My wedding day is June 14th," I said. "Not birthday." "Same," she said, smiled. "My daughter's wedding day. She died in dress. Size 6. You all look like her when you are clean." She dropped hairbrush. Turned, walked back into doll house, left door open. Open door. The six girls ran. Barefoot, white dresses, into desert night, toward our FBI plane lights now landing on dirt road, red and blue flashing. Eleanor on ground, concrete drying on her dress, grabbed my ankle. "You will never prove it," she hissed. "Contracts say voluntary return. Judges signed. Your husband signed. All husbands signed. It's not trafficking if they sign." Rollins, g*n now on his own sergeant who had dropped his g*n when FBI landed, said: "Voluntary doesn't count when you pour concrete over a girl breathing, Eleanor." He cuffed her. Real cuffs. Not zip ties. Simone knelt by mother, but not to help up. To whisper: "You said I'd be daughter. But you made me pour Mae. Daughters don't pour sisters." She stood, walked to FBI, hands out. "I want deal. I have video. Every pour. House Zero bunker. Everything. And I know where Judge Holt buried House Two, 2020, who fought. Under lake house, not bunker. I will show." Lena put arm around me. Priya put arm around Imani. We seven - Zuri 2024, Priya 2024, Lena 2018, Imani 2025, plus three desert girls who ran to us - stood in desert while FBI surrounded doll house. Mrs. Holt sat inside, alone, brushing an empty chair. My empty chair. ZURI 2024. She looked out window at me and said, "Your dress still fits. You want to try?" I said: "Burn it." And Lena did. She took windmill oil and poured it on my empty chair and lit it. My dress, size 6, burned in desert, June 14th coming in two days, and for first time since I married Kevin, I was not a size. I was not a date. I was not House One. I was Zuri. ady?
