Chapter 2

"Serena, you seriously don't know how to play golf? Let me tell you, Ricardo is amazing at it. I only got good because he taught me little by little. Ricardo loves golf so much. If you learned too, wouldn't you be able to play with him all the time? Wouldn't that be wonderful?" "I don't like it," I said flatly. I had been there with Ricardo every step of the way as he built the career he had now. When his startup days were at their hardest and he had no money at all, I was the one working myself to the bone to support him. And it was during that time that I got pregnant for the first time. Back then, I was delivering takeout on the side to make a little extra money. It was raining heavily that day. After I dropped off an order, the customer noticed that a little rainwater had gotten onto the food. He flew into a rage on the spot, smashed the takeout box into my face, and forced me to kneel and eat everything off the ground. When I turned to leave, he grabbed the golf club beside him and slammed it hard into my stomach. That was when I lost my baby. I had never told Ricardo about it. So he could love golf without a second thought. But I could not. For the rest of my life, I never wanted to touch that sport again. A few seconds later, Freya and Ricardo walked off together. While they were playing, Ricardo would go over from time to time to coach her. From where I sat, his tall frame almost completely enveloped her. The occasional brush of their bodies looked restrained, yet there was something undeniably intimate about it. Before long, a burst of excited cheering erupted from the other side. "Ricardo made a hole-in-one!" "He has to treat us to dinner tonight!" "Ricardo, that was incredible!" Ricardo stood there holding the club, a smile curling at his lips. Then he handed every staff member present a five-thousand-dollar tip. Five thousand dollars. That was what I used to earn only after working three jobs a day for two straight months. When the game ended, they all started clamoring to go celebrate. Before we got into the car, Freya slipped into the front passenger seat first. I paused for a second, then silently opened the rear door and got in. After the car pulled away, Freya suddenly turned around as if she had just realized something. "Sorry, Serena. I get carsick, so I'm used to sitting in the front. You don't mind, do you? We can pull over ahead and switch seats if you want." Ricardo spoke before I could. "No need. If you get carsick, stay in the front." I swallowed the words on the tip of my tongue and slowly closed my eyes. Then the car jerked to a sudden stop. Something rolled out by my feet. I bent down to pick it up and realized it was a used lipstick. The color was bright. It was not mine. It was, however, very similar to the one on Freya's lips. How many times had she ridden in this car when I was not around? As I was lost in thought, Freya suddenly clutched her stomach, and her face turned deathly pale. Ricardo noticed immediately. "What's wrong?" Freya was in too much pain to speak. Her face had gone completely white. "It's not your period these days, is it? Did you eat something bad? I'll take you to the hospital." The moment he finished speaking, the car came to an abrupt stop. "Serena, Freya isn't feeling well. I'm taking her to the hospital first. You get out and make your own way home." With that, he dragged me out of the car without giving me any chance to refuse. I opened my mouth, but before I could say a word, the car was already gone. My whole body turned cold. My hands and feet went numb, and I stood there for a long time without moving. He had forgotten that he had dragged me out in a hurry, so I did not have my phone with me. He had also forgotten that I did not bring any money. Just like that, he left me alone by the side of the road.
