Just then, a new message popped up on my phone.
It was from Freya.
Freya: Serena, did you like the gift? Ricardo said he wanted to buy you something to make it up to you, so I helped him choose that golf club. A lot of people have been wanting that one. What happened yesterday was because of me, after all. I hope you'll accept it and forgive both me and Ricardo.
So even the gift that was supposed to be an apology to me had been chosen by Freya.
But why did it have to be a golf club?
I bit my lip hard, and once again I could not stop myself from thinking about the baby who never got the chance to be born.
Just then, the front door was pushed open, and Ricardo walked in.
Freya was right behind him.
The moment Ricardo saw the tears all over my face, he frowned and strode toward me.
"What's wrong?"
But before I could say a word, Freya suddenly let out a scream and dropped to her knees.
She picked up the golf club, now snapped in two, and stared at it in shock.
"How could this happen? This was my favorite club. It was the one I used when I made my first hole-in-one. How could it break..."
She clutched the broken club and cried miserably.
Then she suddenly looked up at me, tears streaming down her face.
"Serena, if you didn't like the gift, you could have just said so. How could you destroy it like this..."
I opened my mouth, but not a single word came out. My throat felt too tight to speak.
And Ricardo's icy gaze had already fallen on me.
"Serena, even if you didn't like it, you had no right to ruin someone else's good intentions. Apologize."
He did not ask why I was crying.
He did not ask why I had smashed the club.
He only told me to apologize.
It was supposed to be a gift for me, and yet I did not even have the right to decide what to do with it.
How ridiculous.
I looked at Freya and suddenly said, "If you care about it that much, why don't I compensate you with a hole-in-one too?"
The next second, a hard slap landed across my face.
My head snapped to the side, and my ears rang.
Ricardo had never hit me before.
This was the first time.
And it was for another woman.
After the slap, his expression stiffened for a second.
But that brief hesitation was quickly swallowed by anger.
"Serena, you've really gone too far."
Slowly, I lifted my face and looked at him.
"How have I gone too far? I only gave her own words back to her exactly as she said them. Is that too far?"
Ricardo's chest rose and fell sharply.
"You know better than anyone what filthy things are going through your mind."
With that, he took Freya and left.
I curled my lips into a faint smile and turned to pack my things.
I had just printed out the divorce papers when my stomach suddenly lurched, and I ran to the bathroom and threw up.
A few seconds later, I froze where I stood.
There were two lines on the pregnancy test.
We had been trying for a baby all year, and nothing had happened.
And now, just when I was getting ready to leave, the baby had come.
But even so, it would not change my decision.
I would take it as a gift from heaven.
Even if it was only the child and me from now on, I would not be too lonely.
As for the fatherly love my child would grow up without, I would do everything I could to make up for it.
I left the divorce papers on the table, pulled my suitcase behind me, and walked out of the room.
But the moment I reached the door, I ran straight into Ricardo, his face dark and stormy.
His eyes fell on the suitcase behind me, and a cold smile appeared on his lips.
"You did something so vicious, and now you think you can just run away?"
I froze.
"What are you talking about?"
He grabbed me by the arm, dragged me straight to the car, and took me to the hospital.
