Chapter 8 Stay and Be My Assistant

550 Words
Her eyes blazed with anger, looking like she wanted to tear me apart. Adara shouted, "Who do you think you are? You're only spending Randy's money! All of it belongs to me. Everything you're wearing is mine." She screamed almost wildly. Everyone turned to stare at us. I wasn't used to being the center of attention all of a sudden. The receptionist seemed to figure out what was going on. Her expression turned awkward, and she slowly backed away. A voice called out, "Selene, it's been a long time." I turned toward the sound. An old partner walked toward me excitedly. I said, "Shawn?" I barely recognized him. Shawn Hale was my senior in college. He'd started the business with us. He was great at his job and had become Randall's personal assistant. He'd been a confident, handsome young man back then. How had he ended up like this in just three years? He had a belly. His thick hair was starting to thin. His once-clear face looked tired and worn out. Working as Randall's assistant hadn't just taken his effort—it had taken his life. I patted his shoulder. "These past few years must have been hard on you." Something about those words struck a chord in him. Shawn's eyes reddened at once. "Selene, I wish you'd never left the company." I heard so many complicated feelings in his voice. After I married Randall, he hadn't wanted us both working at the company. Brielle was still alive back then, and he'd wanted me to stay home and take care of her. Little by little, I stepped away from my career. I stopped being involved with Scott Group entirely. "Hey! Are you ignoring me?" Adara, who'd been left out, finally lost her patience. She glared at Shawn. Shawn's face turned dark, too. "Ms. Thorne, you should know this is the president's wife." Adara rolled her eyes. "We'll see who the real wife is soon." She walked step by step toward Shawn and poked his shoulder hard with her finger. "Don't forget who your boss is. A dog begging for food knows to wag its tail for its master. Understand?" In front of everyone, she crushed Shawn's dignity. Everyone watched, their eyes full of all kinds of looks—mostly just amusement. Shawn clenched his fists. Even the easygoing guy was burning with anger. "I've had enough!" He slammed his ID badge and suit jacket on the floor. He'd finally exploded like a volcano after holding back for so long. Shawn shouted, "Randall's an i***t! He has no talent. He's just living off everything Selene built. Without Selene, he's nothing. He fired all our old core workers. Why? Because we all looked up to Selene!" His sudden outburst shocked Adara. From his words, I finally learned how the people who'd built the company with us had been betrayed. Randall really was a terrible person. Shawn snapped at Adara, "You think a homewrecker like you can order me around? Who do you think you are? I quit!" Shawn was fuming. He started to walk out, but I stopped him. "Shawn, stay and be my assistant. Will you?" Shawn froze. His anger vanished at once. He stared at me in shock. A moment later, his eyes grew watery. "You... You're coming back?"
