Madeline gasped for air and swallowed a mouthful of salty water. She kicked her legs hard to stay afloat as the ground she had stood on before was suddenly gone.
It was still dark and cold. The turbulent water added to her disorientation and confusion. But she was certain she was still inside the veil, and Zeths was still somewhere watching her with amusement, waiting for her to lose her double bet.
She didn’t like being in the water, let alone underwater. And because she was so busy reminding herself to keep breathing, she wasn't in any condition to be glamorous, let alone seduce a soulmate she had never met.
