Madeline followed the leader of the thieves into a grand room with domed ceilings, a polished floor, and golden vines that wrapped white marble columns.
In the middle of the room stood the man sent to abduct her outside her office. He looked totally different now. She had thought he was a vampire when she saw no reflection on the glass. Now, she was absolutely sure that he was, indeed, a vampire. He was tall with pallid skin, long dark hair, and bloodied lips.
He stood next to a sizable rectangular object with a dull surface that stood on an easel.
She guessed it was the mirror they had talked about, but its rectangular surface didn't seem to be made of glass or anything reflective. If it was a painting, then the massive, carved frame was more interesting than the dull gray s
