24 The commotion fell away behind her. Others were running, she thought, but she didn’t turn or slow to watch them. This was about her now, just her and her feet against the sand, her lungs against the salt air. It had been so long since she had run like this, free and wild, not an obligatory suburban jog or careful track-based sprint. No, Sara ran like a child, as fast as she could, across uneven terrain without a goal besides escape. She had to concentrate to keep her feet beneath her on the loose sand, only taking the time to assess her surroundings when she paused to catch her breath.
