Postscript
While this book adheres to the sequence of the main events in Sofonisba Anguissola's life, inferred from the documents which have survived, it is nevertheless a work of fiction. Imaginary characters exist alongside historical figures, and as with the protagonist, I have taken the liberty to attribute thoughts and feelings to them, modernising and transforming them into literary subjects.
I have followed as much as possible the chronology of the artist's works, though there still exist dating problems and difficulties regarding the belated or incorrect attribution of works to the artist, as the vast majority of her paintings are unsigned.
