Chapter 3 The bishop of Catania conducted the ceremony for my marriage to Fabrizio. The voices of the choir filled the church with harmony as we walked back up the central nave towards the doorway, where we were met by a shower of rose petals. The convent of San Francesco alla Collina was a miracle of peace and silence. The meadows glowed in a carpet of light, setting off the reddish tones of the walls, the bright contrast of colour bringing to life the special feeling of the day. I breathed in the warm September air and the light breeze from down in the valley which carried with it an aroma of the orange groves. I felt slightly disorientated by the crowd of strangers who came to shake my hand or kiss me on the cheeks. Fabrizio told me their names, but it was impossible to remember them
