The sun is beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the hotel room as I enter to find the others there chatting about hot guys they have spotted as they get ready for dinner.
My heart is still racing slightly from my talk with Malik. He walked me back to the hotel and I can’t wait to share the news with my friends.
“Guys, you won’t believe who I ran into on the beach,” I burst out, practically bouncing on my toes. The atmosphere in the room shifts as my friends turn to me with varying degrees of curiosity.
“Who? Tell us!” Tessa urges, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Arabella half rolls her eyes, “Unless you are going to say ‘the Prince’ or Elvis it can only be Malik.”
“Yes, Malik,” I can feel my cheeks flush, and my smile falters slightly at her tone. “He asked me if I wanted to hang out tonight as he has the rest of the day off, you know, see a bit of the Island outside of the resort.”
“Are you serious? That’s amazing!” Tessa beams, clapping her hands together. “You have to go! This is your chance to actually get to know him.”
“Right?” I nod, trying to contain my giddiness. “He seems so different from everyone else here. I mean, he’s not a rich guy… and he is not here to find a wife… but I did not come to find a husband so…”
“Exactly!” Nia cuts in. “This is so cool! You’re going to have your own little adventure. I can’t wait to hear all about it!”
But then there’s Arabella, her expression more skeptical than the others. “I just don’t understand why you’d choose to spend your evening with a… servant,” she says delicately, as if the word itself might break apart at any moment. “There are so many handsome, rich men here. Why Malik?”
I feel a twinge of irritation at her words, but I take a deep breath to quell it. “It’s not just about that, Arabella. It’s about connection. He’s interesting and genuine. I mean, when was the last time we talked to someone who wasn’t trying to impress us with their money or status?”
“Well, that’s why I came here, to find someone with money and status,” Arabella shrugs, her perfectly coiffed hair bouncing slightly. “I just think it’s a bit… unconventional. But if you like him, then go for it. I just hope you’re not missing out on something better.”
“Come on, let her have this!” Tessa jumps in, her voice full of enthusiasm. “This is what vacations are for. Charlie, if you feel a spark, you have to explore it. You never know what could happen. Also I think he is very handsome and charming.”
“Exactly,” I agree, my heart racing at the thought of tonight. “I want to see where this goes. It could be something special.”
“Okay, okay,” Arabella concedes, rolling her eyes but unable to hide a small smile. “Just make sure to keep your options open, alright? You never know what other distractions might come your way. And please stay safe if you leave the resort.”
“Trust me, I will,” I say, a grin breaking out across my face. “But right now, I’m just excited to see Malik again. He’s… different. In a good way.”
I go to take a shower, so I will be ready to go out. Standing under the cool spray of water, I can’t help but think of what the evening might hold. Will Malik surprise me? Will we have a magical time together? Or will it turn out he is like most men I have met?
“I’m going to change into something cute,”” I declare, bouncing out from the bathroom. “You guys keep me accountable to look my best, but not like I expect anything… or he should expect anything.”
“Absolutely! You’re going to knock his socks off… but not his pants,” Nia encourages, and I can hear Tessa giggling in agreement.
As I rummage through my suitcase, I can’t help but feel grateful for this trip. For my friends. And most importantly, for the unexpected connection that might just be waiting for me tonight. I can already picture Malik’s smile, the way his eyes light up when he laughs.
Tonight is going to be incredible. I can feel it in my bones.
