Searching for Max

***Eleven years ago*** "I have thought about it mum, and I am willing to accept a home teacher." Jasmine said to her mother. She had decided this less than twenty minutes after her mum suggested it because she didn't see a better option. The decision would be the best for her and her mother. It was hard moving from one place to another, and they had already moved five times because of her. Though her mother was not complaining, she knew that this was not easy for her. Yes, she was nine years old but she was wiser than other children of her age. She had changed schools five times, and it was already taking a toll on her. Every time she enrolls in a new school, something always happens that will make her change her school. There was always someone waiting to bully her wherever she goes. It was as if trouble follows her everywhere. Now the problem wasn't the bully. The problem starts whenever she gets fed up and confronts the bully or fights back. The person always runs away looking like they had encountered a ghost, only to return with their parents the next day to report that she was a witch who almost killed them. A few days later, the bully usually develops a strange illness and dies from it. Suspicion aroused in the heart of the people around her, her friends likewise. Everyone starts to treat her like an alien or a deadly contagious disease thereby forcing them to move to a new location. Her last School was her fifth one, and the fifth time the same thing happened again. Even though she had decided not to fight back, the bully had come to hit her because she ignored him. The same thing happened to him which had happened to the others. "Come here, baby." Her mother gestured with open arms and she walked into her mother's embrace. "It will be alright; everything will be alright okay?" She encouraged. She had asked Jasmine to consider homeschooling because of the challenges she faced with normal schooling. "I pray so mum. I don't know why it keeps happening but I don't want to experience it again." She said while hugging her mom tightly. "I don't want you to blame yourself for anything alright? What happened has nothing to do with you okay?" She tried to cheer her up and her daughter nodded to her satisfaction. "I know that mum." She assured her mother even though she was beginning to doubt that she was normal. She didn't want her mother to worry about her. "Good. Now go to bed. Or do you want me to tuck you in?" Her mother asked while stroking her hair lightly. "No mum, I am a big girl now." She said as she withdrew from her mother's arms. "Of course you are. Alright, go to bed. It's late." "Okay. I will just find max and then go to bed. Goodnight mum." Jasmine said. "Goodnight sweetie." Her mother wished her after kissing her forehead. Jasmine walked around the house, looking for her puppy, Max. "Where are you, Max? It's time to go to bed." She called out. "What are you doing there?" She whispered when she found him digging up a covered hole on the fence. Before she could get to him, he had already slipped through to the other side of the fence. "Max!" she whisper-screamed when the puppy disappeared from her sight. The fence separates their house from Wilson's house, and she was aware that the Wilsons traveled. The only way to get her puppy back was to either go through the fence or wait for him to come back. Deciding not to wait, she climbed over the fence and jumped into Wilson's yard. She landed smoothly like a cat with her head facing downwards. When she raised her head, she saw a young boy staring at her wide-eyed, and her puppy was in his mouth. Her heart almost stopped beating as the shock shut her down immediately. Jasmine closed her eyes and opened them almost immediately, but she found no one there anymore. She blinked again and again but still didn't see anyone in front of her. She scrunched up her face as she wondered if it was her imagination. But she had seen Max in the boy's mouth. That couldn't be her imagination right? She was sure that she saw someone but where did he disappear to? She stood up from the ground and looked around the yard. It became difficult to decide whether to move forward or turn back. She would have gladly chosen to turn back, if not for her dog that was still somewhere in this yard. "Max!" she called out again as she walked towards the right side of the house but she stopped when she heard the puppy yelp. The sound came from the opposite side of where she was heading so she turned around sharply. Her heart was beating wildly to the point where she could hear it in her ears. She walked in the opposite direction, slowly and fully alert. It was already dark but she could still see clearly. She had never been afraid of the dark. However, tonight was different. Nobody was supposed to be in this house as the owners traveled, but she had seen someone a few moments ago and he had disappeared just like that. Was he a ghost? At that thought, she almost gave up on the search but the thought that her puppy could be in trouble made her continue. She continued walking and searching for max carefully until she got to a place that looked like a glass door. She froze again and blinked several times to ascertain if what she was seeing is real or her imagination again. It took all her willpower not to scream at the top of her lungs. Behind the door, the boy she had seen earlier, stood looking directly at her with a frown on his face. He was looking at her as if he was expecting her to do something. Looking at him closely, he wasn't as young as she had thought. He sure was older than her. When jasmine was convinced that she was not imagining things, her eyes moved to the boy's hand. He was holding her puppy and Max was bleeding. Anger surged through her veins and her fear disappeared immediately. What had he done to her dog? "Max!" Jasmine called out as she ran towards the glass door. She intended to bang on the door so that the boy will release her puppy to her. It didn't happen as she expected because she fell right through the door into the glass room. "Give my dog back. What have you done to him? she asked while still trying to stand up but the boy neither moved nor responded to her questions. He was still in shock. His eyes stretched wide when he saw her fall into the room. He continued to stare at her as she stood up from the ground. She marched towards him with angry steps not minding the slight pain she was feeling. "Give him back." She demanded and she stretched her hands forward to receive her puppy. He finally moved and placed the puppy in her hands. Jasmine examined the puppy to find that he was bleeding just below his neck. It was a small wound but still enough to get her angry. "Why did you injure him?" She asked but he did not respond. She turned back to walk away, expecting him to hit her or do something to provoke her just like the other bullies, but he did nothing. When she began to walk away from the room, he stretched his hand in an attempt to stop her from leaving. "Wait... Don't go." He said in his head but the words never made it out of his mouth and she didn't stop. The moment she got to the fence, she turned around to find him looking at her with a complicated expression. She didn't understand why he was looking like that and she immediately felt the need to talk to him. But, she was tired of making friends who will later turn into enemies and force them to move again. She just ignored him and climbed over the fence, back into her house. That night, jasmine couldn't sleep. After cleaning Max's wound, she kept seeing the boy's face and she felt bad that she didn't talk to him. Why was he alone in the house? Did his parents travel without him? What if he was hungry? So many questions filled her head that she had no answers. She became curious and wanted answers that only the boy in question can give. She finally drifted off to sleep hours later after deciding that she would go see the boy tomorrow. Two days later, Jasmine went to see the strange boy. She couldn't keep up with a decision to stay away from trouble anymore. She hurriedly ate her lunch and packed another plate for the boy. Stretching her hands forward, she made to touch the glass door but her fingers just passed through as if there was no barrier there. "Hello!" She awkwardly waved at him when she saw him seated on the floor. When she got no response nor movement from him, she continued talking. "Hey, can you hear what I am saying?" She asked again. When she got no response still, she assumed he was mute. She took her backpack off and sat on the ground, opposite him. "I brought food for you. Thought you might be hungry." She brought out the food she had packaged, from her backpack. "Here you go. I hope you like it." She opened the food and stretched it towards him. The boy finally moved his eyes off her face to look at the food he was offered. He directed his gaze back to her face to see her urging him to take the food. He collected the food from her hand, bringing a smile to her face. When he didn't start eating, she thought he needed privacy so she stood up to leave. "Don't leave. Please, stay." She heard the boy say and she widened her eyes. "You can speak?" Jasmine asked when she turned back to face him. The boy just nodded and without another word, he proceeded to eat the food she had brought for him. "Why did you come back?" He questioned when he was done eating. Her eyes moved to the plate and she noticed he ate everything except for the vegetables.
