Jesse
The annoying sound came again.
A loud, aggressive bang against the door that tore me out of sleep so abruptly my entire body tensed on instinct, my senses snapping awake before my mind could fully catch up.
Another bang followed, louder this time. And even more urgent.
My brows pulled together slightly as awareness began to settle in, piece by piece, dragging the remnants of the night back to the surface. The heat. The loss of control. The unfamiliar fog that had clouded my thoughts so completely it still left a bitter taste in my mouth.
My vision completely cleared and I saw her.
She was sitting calmly on the chair across the room, fully dressed, with her expression unreadable. It didn’t surprise me that she could act so coolly about the entire situation, I’d already guessed that she wasn’t a simple omega.
Another bang echoed through the room.
And my attention snapped back to the door immediately, irritation flashing briefly across my face. Whoever was on the other side clearly had no intention of stopping.
I exhaled slowly, dragging a hand down my face before pushing myself up from the bed.
Without sparing her a word, I reached for my trousers and pulled them on quickly, my movements efficient despite the tension coiling beneath my skin. My mind was already moving ahead, calculating and piecing things together.
I turned toward the door fully, my expression hardening as whatever lingering disorientation I had left faded into cold awareness.
If what she said was true…
Then this was it..
I crossed the room in a few long strides, then I opened the door.
The moment I pulled the door open, the scene unfolded exactly the way she said it would.
My brother was standing there flanked by a group of people, their expressions expectant and very eager. But the moment his eyes landed past me… what went through them was—
Real and unfiltered confusion.
His steps faltered as his gaze locked onto Mia, sitting inside the room.
For a brief second, no one spoke.
Then I tilted my head slightly, my expression cooling into something unreadable as I leaned casually against the doorframe.
“What,” I said slowly, my voice low and edged with irritation, “do you think you’re doing, barging into my room like this?”
He blinked, clearly thrown off balance, his mouth parting before closing again as if the words refused to come out properly.
“I—” he started, then stopped.
His eyes darted between me and Mia again, searching for something, anything that would make sense of what he was seeing.
The hesitation didn’t last long.
His expression twisted suddenly, forcefully rearranging itself into outrage as he stepped forward, pointing an accusing finger past me.
“How dare you!” he shouted, his voice rising sharply. “How dare you do something so despicable like this?!”
The people behind him stirred immediately, murmurs breaking out as they leaned in, ready to believe whatever came next.
My expression didn’t change.
I just watched him coldly waiting for him to fully perform his planned drama.
“You actually dragged a woman in here and forced yourself on her?!” he continued, louder now, his voice filled with exaggerated disbelief. “Have you completely lost your mind?!”
A heavy and suffocating silence followed. It was the kind that stretched just long enough to make the tension snap.
Then—
“I… I don’t understand”
Mia’s voice came out soft and shyly.
I could sense the deliberate fragility in her tone.
When I glanced back, she had lowered her gaze slightly, her fingers twisting together in her lap as if she was genuinely flustered by the accusation.
“We’ve been seeing each other for a while now..” she said coyly, her voice almost shy, almost unsure. “I don’t see what’s wrong with me being with my own man…”
My brother froze.
Completely.
The anger on his face cracked, replaced instantly by something far less controlled. Shock. Disbelief. A flicker of panic that he couldn’t quite hide no matter how hard he tried.
“What…?” he muttered under his breath, his gaze snapping between us again as if hoping one of us would contradict it.
No one did.
I let the silence stretch just a second longer before I straightened, my patience finally thinning.
“If you’re done embarrassing yourself,” I said flatly, my tone devoid of any warmth, “then get out.”
He looked at me. As if trying to figure out where things had gone wrong.
But there was nothing for him to hold onto. No evidence. No chaos. No scandal waiting to explode the moment the door opened.
Just two lovers enjoying being in their own embrace.
His jaw tightened, frustration flashing across his face before he stepped back abruptly.
“Let’s go,” he snapped to the people behind him, his voice clipped and irritated.
One by one, they turned, their earlier anticipation dissolving into awkward silence as they followed him away.
The corridor emptied quickly.
And just like that…
It was over.
I stood there for a moment longer before closing the door slowly.
Then I turned.
My gaze settled on her again.
“How interesting,” I said, the words leaving my lips, my eyes narrowing slightly as I studied her more carefully now.
She met my gaze without flinching this time, the earlier shyness gone like it had never existed.
“Do you believe me now?” she asked.
“Yes,” I said simply.
The word left my lips without hesitation, but it carried a certain level of heaviness—more than I was willing to show on my face. My gaze remained fixed on her, as if I could peel back whatever layers she had carefully placed over herself and see what truly lay beneath.
Because nothing about her was normal.
Not the timing.
Not the accuracy.
“I believe you,” I added after a brief pause, my tone quieter now.
Her shoulders eased slightly at that, but I didn’t miss the way she still held herself together, like someone who understood that belief didn’t mean trust.
“Good then, can we continue our earlier discussion?” she asked softly after giving a small nod.
“This isn’t the place to continue this conversation,” I answered coolly.
Her gaze flickered briefly, it seemed she understood exactly what I meant.
“I’ll send word later,” I continued. “And give you a better place where we can meet up to talk.”
She nodded again without argument.
“Alright then, I need to head back to my pack.”
There was no hesitation in her voice. No attempt to push further. That, in itself, was telling.
Then she walked toward the door.
For a brief moment, her hand rested on the handle.
Then she left.
Just like that.
The room fell into silence again.
I stood there for a while, unmoving, my thoughts shifting rapidly beneath the surface, piecing everything together again and again.
A knock came shortly after.
“Enter,” I said.
The door opened, and my Beta stepped in, closing the door behind him quietly.
I didn’t waste time and questioned him immediately.
“Last night,” I said, turning slightly to face him, my voice calm but carrying a sharp edge beneath it, “did anyone try to enter this room?”
He didn’t hesitate.
“Yes, I stood guard outside as you instructed me through the mindlink.”
My eyes narrowed slightly.
“It was a maid,” he added. “She tried to come inside and kept on insisting she had business here but I chased her away.”
My lips curved slightly into a cold smile and I was even more intrigued with the omega.
“Interesting…” I said under my breath.
Then I looked back at my Beta, my expression hardening once more.
“Investigate her,” I ordered.
His brows drew together slightly, but he didn’t question it.
“I want every single piece of info you can find,” I continued. I paused briefly, my tone dropping just a fraction.
“I need to know exactly who she is.”
Because if she was to be trusted. Then she might be the most valuable ally I could have.
But if she wasn’t—
My gaze hardened.
“Find out if she’s a friend,” I finished quietly.
“Or a foe.”
