For a moment he was puzzled. Then a sudden idea suddenly struck him. He started to walk, at first quickly down the corridor, and then he started to run. He felt as if someone was telling him that Ansella was in danger. He ran as quickly as he could until he reached, as he had expected to do, the door to the Tower. It was open and he hurried up the spiral stairs. When he reached the top, the door, like the one below, was wide open. Ansella was on the other side of the Tower. She was looking over the balustrade down into the moat. With the swiftness of an athlete, the Earl reached her and then put his arms around her. “What are you doing? Why did you come here?” he asked.
