Chapter 13: "The Board Meeting"*

586 Words
The next morning, Luna woke up to a text from Ethan. *Ethan:* `9 AM. Board meeting. You’re coming with me. Dress formal.` Luna stared at the message. Her heart raced. She had been Ethan’s assistant for 3 months. But she had never been to a board meeting. Those were for executives. For important people. Not for her. She picked the only formal dress she owned. Black. Simple. It used to be her interview dress. When she got to Ethan’s office, he was already waiting. Suit. Cold expression. “You look fine,” he said without looking up from his tablet. “Thanks,” Luna mumbled. The boardroom was on the 50th floor. Floor to ceiling windows. A table long enough to fit 30 people. And 12 pairs of eyes that all turned to Luna when she walked in behind Ethan. Whispers started immediately. “Who is she?” “That’s the new wife?” “She doesn’t look like his type.” Luna kept her head down and sat in the chair behind Ethan. Assistant chair. The meeting started. Numbers. Profits. Acquisitions. Words Luna barely understood. Halfway through, one of the older board members, Mr. Davis, cleared his throat. “Ethan, about the merger with Whitlock Group. We’re concerned. You’ve been... distracted lately.” Ethan didn’t blink. “With what?” “With your marriage.” Mr. Davis looked straight at Luna. “We need to know if this is serious. Or just for show. The shareholders are asking questions.” The room went silent. Luna felt everyone staring at her. Her hands started to sweat. Ethan leaned back in his chair. “Is that a question for me, Davis? Or for my wife?” “Both,” Davis said. “If this marriage falls apart in 6 months, it will look bad for the company.” Luna’s chest tightened. Six months. That’s all this was. Before she could stop herself, Luna spoke. “It’s serious,” she said. Her voice was quiet but steady. “Ethan and I... we’re working on it. Every day.” All eyes turned to her. Ethan turned too. He looked surprised. Luna continued, “I know I’m not from your world. But I care about Ethan. And I care about this company. I’m not going anywhere.” She wasn’t lying. Not completely. For a second, no one spoke. Then Ethan smiled. Just a small one. But it was there. “Thank you, Mrs. Carter,” he said. Mrs. Carter. The words echoed in Luna’s head. Mr. Davis sat back, clearly not happy, but he nodded. “Fine. We’ll see.” The meeting continued. But the tension was gone. After the meeting, in the elevator, it was just the two of them. “You didn’t have to say that,” Ethan said. “I meant it,” Luna replied. Ethan looked at her. “Why?” Luna didn’t know how to answer that. So she didn’t. The elevator dinged. As they walked out, Ethan’s phone rang. He answered it and his face went cold. “What do you mean she’s back?” he said into the phone. “I told her not to—” He stopped when he saw Luna looking at him. He hung up. “Who was that?” Luna asked. Ethan didn’t answer. He just walked faster. But Luna saw it. The way his jaw clenched. Something was wrong. And for the first time, Luna was scared it wasn’t about the contract. It was about someone else.
