TBWL#13: We are going to be crushed

“Careless decision making is the naïve belief that one decision has no more impact than one decision, because one decision can generate thousands of other decisions that are completely unnecessary, or it can bring peace to thousands of places that we even exist. did not suspect.” --------------------------- Calixto's Point of View. ----------------------------- "Of course, we have extra. Silly, do you think we would go to the capital without reserved stock?" "Capita? Do you intend to throw away your life by setting foot in the capital? That place is dense with population, thus it is only natural that it would be a place fluctuating with eaters." "But, it is the easiest way to go to the vessel that usually monitors and aboard survivors to be placed on another island." "There is such a thing as that?" I asked. I shifted my gaze to Romer and stared at him. He simply shrugged off his shoulder. He probably doesn't know such a service exists.  "What are you guys talking about?" says Lore. "Romer and Calixto, you should get some sleep. We need to restore strength and stamina." Well, they are not wrong. In order to make a run for another hunting night or even in broad daylight, we needed to restore the strength we lost. Sleep is unavoidable. After being awake for more than 24 hours, our body had weakened. Sleep deprivation is not just about weakening your body. We would have a hard time remembering things, seeing patterns, or solving problems. We would have difficulty driving a car or using guns, and anything else that requires a steady hand or prolonged focus is most likely going to get botched. Not only will the sleep-deprived characters have difficulty with cognitive tasks that would ordinarily be easy for us. I emptied my mind as I started to doze off. I found it easy to fall asleep maybe because I am sleep-deprived and exhausted.  I thought I had emptied my mind when I decided to shut my eyes but it seems I forgot to empty my heart. This beating organ still cannot find peace, it is still troubling... Is it really fine to sleep? What if an unexpected thing happened? perhaps, being surrounded by a swarm of zombies? What if while running and avoiding zombies, the van bumped into something that leads the engine to ruin? No, I trust these people around me. I know they are capable of putting up against the zombies. How stupid of me to think that I was fighting alone. Gone with the days when I used to be stuck in the capsule alone. I have found people to protect too aside from my slim hope of finding my family. I really need to sleep... "Calixto, what took you so long to find us?" "We have been waiting for you," "Uncle..." I can't move. They are hugging me from behind.... is this real? I did find them alas. I turned around and only found a hideous face of a monster, it was not bony, but someone with the face of a daywalker, the only difference is their eyes... how did it become red, when in fact there is no bleeding? their faces are utterly white just like a walking dead. I can even see their veins. Zombies can't talk, probably they are not a zombie but what are they?  "I tried to touch them but they exploded in front of me. The next thing I knew, I was standing in the middle of the rain. No, it was not ordinary rain! It is a rain of red ink, it feels like an artist wanted to paint the world with blood. Weird! I can hear a weird sound that belongs neither to humans nor animals. That sound could be... It's too late when I realized the zombies had jumped into me. I want to live... Then, I felt a hand extended in the middle of the crowd... i-it slapped me. "What the hell are you doing? You are trembling like you are facing your death?" Lore asked. She placed the back of her hand at her forehead. "We are here, be sure to get your senses back. We are going to grab a chance to get as much food as we can. Do not call the attention of daywalkers. They are stingy once they find their food, I swear they are getting aggressive as time passes by," says the woman with an eyepatch. "My wife and I will watch over the outside of this mall, so you better hurry back. Just get enough, do not be greedy in getting all the food. Get the necessary foods as much as possible." The four of us get out of the car and the same goes with the other van. This mall is quite big, it has three floors to be exact. But we only have our eyes on the supermarket, which is on the first floor. Wandering off farther would waste our time, the greater the time we spend outside the van the more danger we are going to dwell in.  We took a big Plastic and simply put all the canned foods, slices of bread and water bottle. Well, I think this is all that we need. We actually had to gather food but they are all gone along with the bombs we find on the military base. If only the nightwalkers had not appeared that day. Now, I have no weapon to fight aside from the archer. I need at least a knife or an arrow to refill since it's depleting. It is much better if a sword would poop up like a mushroom, but of course, it won't happen. This ain't a novel, that everything is laid for the convenience of the protagonist. I am neither a protagonist. "You keep on sighing, are you that anxious that we might run into zombies again?" "Yeah," I replied and pulled her closer because I heard a commotion from the F section of this grocery area. We are in the D section, which means the danger is only a few steps away from us. "Run back to the van~~! They are coming this way...." Shit! Where did they come from? As far as I remember this coast was clear when we entered. We immediately strolled the roller that contained our food, tossed it inside, and locked the door of the van. Some of the zombies had jumped on the roof of our van making it hard to drive, especially when one of them blocked the front view. This is going to be bad if we hit and crushed the car somewhere. I need to do something!
