*Knocking on door* "Go away! " I yelled, pulling the covers over my face. * pounding on door gets louder* "Open the door !" a female voice yelled back at me. I sat up and looked around at my surroundings. I was home. How did I get home? I looked and saw the pajamas I was wearing. Why was I wearing pajamas? I never wore them. I usually just wore an oversized shirt. Was all that just a dream last night, or did it really happen? * pounding at door continues* "Girl, I am serious, you better open this door before I tear it down!" After that threat, I realized it was Megan, but why was she here? " Hold on!" I yelled, getting out of my bed and heading the back door. As I opened the door, I saw the hammer in her hand and gave a little chuckle. " Just in the nick of time to save my door, I see". Megan pushed passed me and entered the house, walking over to the kitchen island and sitting on one of the stools and placing the hammer on the table. Megan took a deep breath as I picked the hammer up off the counter and placed it in a drawer out of her reach. " Girl, you better tell me what the hell is going on. I got a call from Jorden this morning saying that the sheriff's office found your truck in the middle of Tucker Rd with all your belongings in it. They called me to see if I had seen you or heard from you. I told them not since last night at work, so I rushed over here and your door was locked, which is odd you never lock your door. I was afraid that someone had kidnapped you or had killed you...... are you wearing pajamas?". I smiled and walked over to the coffee maker to make some much-needed coffee. " Breathe Megan, I am fine. I think I hit a deer or something last night. I must have banged my head or something. I don't really remember how I got home." She gave me an aggravated look. "Don't act like nothing has happened, I swear I will smack the s**t out of you. We were all really terrified. "I just texted Jorden to let him know that you are fine and at home." I turned around as the coffee started to brew and heard someone driving down the driveway. I looked out the window at the back door to the carport and saw that Jorden was in my truck pulling it underneath and a Sheriff's unit pulling in behind him. "That didn't take them long. " I said to Megan, walking back over to the island and sitting down next to her on one of the stools. " Good Morning gentlemen" I said as Jorden and Deputy Hayes walked in through my back door. Jorden looked at me, his hazel eyes full of concern and worry. " What happened, Cora? " I tried to give him a reassuring smile. " I'm not really sure, I remember hitting something." I think it was a deer. I must have hit my head or something because I don't remember anything. I was completely out until Megan was pounding on my door this morning." Jorden walked closer to me. "I saw the blood on the side of your truck. I was really worried. Do you want us to take you to the hospital to be checked?" I stood up and walked around him and Hayes and stared at poor coffee in different cups. I handed one to jorden and Hayes then gave one to Megan before grabbing a cup for me and pouring the much-needed heavenly brown liquid. " No, I'm good, I feel fine, just a bit tired, but work was hell last night." "Are you sure?" Deputy Hayes said after taking a drink of his coffee and setting it on the island. I smiled at them both. " I'm positive, sorry about that whole mess, and thank you for bringing my truck back, it saved me a trip." Jorden let out a sigh. I knew he didn't really believe me, but he wasn't going to push it. Jorden looked over at Hayes and told him he could go wait in the unit, and he would be there in a bit. Hayes finished his coffee in one big swig, which I found impressive, and told me to call if I needed anything. Megan jumped up and started to follow him. "Wait for me, Hayes, I want to talk to you for a minute." Megan patted Jorden on the chest as she walked out. "Take it easy on her chief." Joden gave her a smile, then he returned his attention to me as she shut the door as she walked out. " Cora" Jorden said in a soft growl. I took another sip of my coffee and looked over at him. "Don't make a big deal of this Jay, I am fine, you don't have to watch over me like some sheepdog." He walked over to me and raised my head to where I was looking at him in the eye. "Cora, are you going to tell me what is going on with you, Why you broke up with me and what all this about, is there something I can do to help, are you in some kind of trouble?". I looked into his tired hazel eyes for a moment and saw the sadness and longing in his eyes. I rubbed his arm with my hand, then stood up and walked over to the sink to place my cup inside of it. " Like I said, Jay, I am fine. "Again, thank you for bringing my truck back, but I would really like to get some more sleep." I walked over to the door and opened it. " I promise to call if I need anything or if anything else happens. ' Jorden walked towards the door and stopped in front of me and looked down. "You know I love you Cora?" I looked at him and smiled. "I know Jay, I'll let you know if anything changes." He leaned down and kissed the top of my head and walked out the door. I waved to Megan, then shut my door. I walked over to the coffee pot and shut it off, then made my way back to bed. As I lay there, all I could think of was the half-naked man from last night who kept calling my name like he knew me. Maybe I really did hit my head last night, because it all really did feel like a strange dream.
