Journal of Frankie DragonSpire Dear Diary, Zoric and I threatened the breed council tonight, not sure how that happened but it did. I have a bad feeling that they are not going to take this lying down; I wonder what they will do to retaliate. Grandma took us to a cave; my dragon says spells protect it; I got all-emotional during “Family moments” I cannot help that my parentals are sadistic freaks. I am worried, I can feel something coming, and it is going to be bad! Frankie DS.   “Frankie, Frankie. Damn it, DragonSpire wake up.” I struggled to stay sleeping; I could feel that the sun was still in the sky. I groaned at the annoyingly persistent voice urging me to wake. Finally giving up any chance of a peaceful existence, I opened one eye to glare in irritation at the vampire above me. Zoric stared down at me. “If the world is not coming to an end, go away and if it is, I need five more minutes,” I muttered. Zoric grinned leaning over me. I realized at that moment that he was next to me...on the bed. My heart shuddered to a stop and then began a slightly frenzied gallop until I thought it was going to beat right out of my chest. “I could almost samba to that beat, I wonder what it is? Couldn’t possibly be a heart?” He teased. The corners of Zorics mouth tipped up slowly as he listened to the thundering sound. I groaned inwardly. Wonderful, if life was not complicated enough add bloody teenage post-transition hormones. “Frankie are you awake?” He asked quietly his mouth far too close to my cheek for comfort. “Oh sure, have been for hours. I am mowing the lawn right now.” I replied with heavy sarcasm. “Glad to hear it. Lucian just called he had to wait until his parents had gone out. The council voted against us!” I launched into a sitting position. Twisting to one side, I stared down into his face. “What, they did what? Oh, for the love of God, what are they going to do? Surely they are not going to hunt us?” Zoric leaned back into the pillows, his arms folded behind his head. I was still gaping in shock a few minutes later. “That was all Luc heard. I do not know what they are going to do to us. The council has no idea who we are. Your Grandmother told them we appeared in the atrium moments before we stepped through the doors to the council chambers. No one there recognized us, not even our family members.” I shook my head, that report was not entirely correct. “Poppa knew who we were, he was directing me, telling me what to say and do. This is such a mess. Did Luc say anything else?” I rubbed the back of my neck; the muscles there had tightened to hard knots. “Only that we are being picked up early, in the next hour, and being taken to Montcastle Park. Our parents want to keep us looking as normal as possible to divert any major attention.” I had to agree there. I held out my hand, Zoric linked his fingers through mine. “The council is full of old fools...who knew. Them aside, we need to talk about that demon. I know that we are only days out of our transitions, but from what the chant said about this fella. I am betting he is not here to spread cheer and goodwill. I have a feeling we are going to have to hunt him.” I whispered suddenly afraid for our futures. Up until that moment, the only thing I had to fear was falling down a flight of stairs again, now I had to worry about others trying to kill my friends and me. “Oh damn, my mother is coming. If she catches me in here I’m dragon soup. I’ll see you in a few.” Zoric leaned over and pressed his warm lips to my cheek before bolting off the bed, he winked at me, flipping back a huge tapestry he disappeared. I heard the faint scrap of something on the floor then nothing. A heartbeat later, I turned my head to see Mrs Ravenstone opening the door. Sneaky bugger had a secret passageway; I wondered if his parents knew about it? “Oh Francesca, hello dear, how long have you been awake?” She smiled warmly, her ankle-length dress made a slight swishing sound as she moved. “Not long, ten minutes or so. Was there any word from the council? Have they made up their minds yet on what to do?” I asked sliding off the bed, my clothes were rumpled and no doubt, my hair was a mess. Mrs Ravenstone picked up a bag from the corner of the room, she handed it to me. “Your Grandmother had some things packed for you while we were in the caverns. Get dressed and come down, Solomon will explain while we eat.” Mrs Ravenstone almost glided across the floor when she left. She was so graceful. The door closing snapped me out of my thoughts I opened the bag wide. My favourite pair of black faded jeans with the strategic tears down the legs and frayed cuffs sat on top folded neatly. Under it a black stretch cotton halter-top that read in bold letters. Dracula for Pope. I loved that shirt. Rummaging in the bag again, I found my tooth and hairbrushes, but no make- up. I was going to die. My make-up was my shield, the only thing in my messed-up life I had the freedom to use. I needed it, without it, I may as well have been naked in the middle of the street. With a groan of despair, I changed into my new clothes and went to work on my hair. I opened the bathroom door; the mirror told me what I already knew. My face looked like I was starring in a Halloween movie. I had racoon eyes, my mascara had run, and my lipstick was long gone. My once flawless complexion made from a mixture of two shades of thick foundation gone too. Now it showed my pale almost translucent skin. Turning on the water, I lathered up my hands with soap and began to scrub the remains of my shield from my face. All the time I wondered how Zoric had kept from laughing at the sight of me. Dabbing the water from my face with a hand towel I finally forced myself to look at my reflection. As before, all I saw was too pale skin stretched over an angular face framed by thick, long black spirals with bright red streaks. Thin black arched brows over large over-bright bottle-green eyes, I thought were too big for my head and dark pink lips a little too pouty to be called sultry.  I sighed, as usual, I looked sick. One of the boys at my old school said I looked like a Japanese anime character without the cool factor. Turning from the mirror, I marched back into my room and packed up my things. I pulled on a pair of flat deck shoes; I left the bag on the bed and hurried out the door. I figured it best to get breakfast over and done with, so I could get home and put my mask firmly back on my skin. I almost ran down the hallway, I skidded on the side of a matt. Slowing to a walk as I came up to the staircase, voices were coming from a doorway off to one side at the bottom. “Zoric, what is going on with you and Francesca?” I could hear Mr Ravenstone clearly, his baritone unmistakable. I heard someone sigh. “She is amazing; I have never met anyone like her in my life. I find myself wanting to be with her all the time; I cannot wait to see her or hear her talk and laugh. Mum her brain is awesome, she is very intelligent, and we like almost all the same things. I hate it when school finishes and I leave her. Francesca DragonSpire is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen; those eyes of hers can stop traffic and do not even get me started on what I think about her legs, their wow...Just wow. So yeah, Dad I have no idea where this is going, but I know I like this girl and I am afraid I am going to mess it all up.” Again, there was a sigh. I crept down the stairs staying on the carpet and hoping that my shoes didn’t squeak, if I was caught now, they would know I heard Zorics descriptive praise, my cheeks were bright red, I had felt the blush fly up my neck when he had mentioned my legs. “Oh Zoric, we understand honey. Francesca is an exceptionally beautiful girl and yes, we have noticed how intelligent she is. Your, Father and I have nothing against her, we think she is wonderful. We were just wondering where things stood between you, whether she is your girlfriend or if you were just friends.” Mrs Ravenstones melodious voice caught me off guard as it always did. I found it almost hypnotizing. I reached the bottom of the stairs sucking in a silent breath that no one had heard me. Finally squaring my shoulders, I crossed the foyer reaching out one hand I knocked on the doorframe. Mr Ravenstone called a sharp command to enter. I stepped over the threshold and into what I discovered was the dining room. Zoric stood up, his dreads were tied back in a thick ponytail at the base of his skull he looked different. “Hi, sorry I took so long, I had a slight hair dilemma. I almost had to use a whip and chair to tie it back.” I joked, one corner of my mouth lifted in a small semblance of a smile. My gaze met Zorics; he was standing with his mouth gaping open. Mrs Ravenstone smiled. “Francesca, that is alright. I have hair drama at least three times each rising; I understand perfectly there is no need to apologize.”  I managed to smile back at her. Mr Ravenstone motioned for me to have a seat across from his son, who was still standing and staring. Beginning to feel a little irritated, I arched one brow in his direction. “Zoric what are you staring at, you look like someone just clobbered you with half a trout?” I asked, taking the seat. Zorics parents looked up at their son they shared an amused glance. Zoric shook his head, sitting heavily. “Ah, um sorry Frankie. I did not mean to stare at you like an i***t it is just; you look so different without your make-up on. I am used to seeing you with- well wow, you just look different.” I blinked. Had Zoric Ravenstone just babbled at me? I shook my head. “Um, yeah I did not have any make-up with me, so I ah, had to go all-natural. To tell the truth I feel silly without it. You see the make-up is like my shield. I started wearing it when I went to public school; it made the others keep their distance because they thought I was scary. I-I guess I got so used to wearing it. When I don’t, it feels strange. Like when you have a ring on your finger that you wear all the time, and then something happens to make you take it off. You feel the loss of it against your skin.” I tried to explain, I did not know why I even wanted to. I suppose it was because I wanted Zoric and his parents to know the real me, not the facade I projected to the world. Mrs Ravenstone nodded. “I understand what you mean Francesca; I have the same reaction with long dresses. I am so used to wearing them that when I put on a pair of jeans last week I felt silly and a little self-conscious.” Mr Ravenstone passed me a plate with bacon, eggs, toast on it, and indicated the juice jug. “I hope you’re hungry. Hester our cook has made enough food to feed an army.” I grinned at him. “Yes, thank you, sir, I am starving,” I replied taking the plate and placing it carefully in front of me. I checked to see if anyone wanted any before gingerly pouring an orange juice. “Francesca, you said that you went to a public school, how is that possible? They never should have accepted you, you’re a DragonSpire, your Grandfather is a Lord.” Mr Ravenstone was frowning across the table. I sighed. “You’ve met my mother. She enrolled me under the name of Brown. I received detention each time I refused to answer to that name. I told them I was a DragonSpire and not a Brown. They accused me of lying to better myself.” I explained dryly, refusing to look at anyone. Mrs Ravenstone hissed in displeasure. “That woman is fast getting on my last nerve Solomon.” She snapped. I shrugged. “It’s all right Mrs Ravenstone, I do not much care. I know who I am. Being forced to take the name Brown and go to breed public has instilled in me a great deal of empathy towards others. If I were raised DragonSpire, I have a feeling that would not be the case.” I replied. “You are probably right.” Solomon sighed. We sat eating in silence for a moment until guilt got the better of me. I mentally kicked myself. “Alright I have to fess up, I have a guilty conscience and if I don’t say it, it will eat me alive.  Zoric I heard you talking when I came down the stairs, do you honestly think those things about me?” Zorics gaze collided with mine; I felt my cheeks begin to heat. He lowered his fork. “Yes Frankie, I do.” His answer was so simple and yet so complicated at the same time. “I’m sorry, I should have walked away but I found that I wanted to know what you thought of me too. I shouldn’t have eavesdropped on your private conversation.” Mr Ravenstone patted my back comfortingly. “Frankie, you could just ask me what I think of you.” Zoric murmured still staring into my eyes. “Not likely, I’m a bloody chicken and a high school female; I have girlfriends for that job,” I told him unevenly. The parentals were the first to chuckle. A smile teased at the corners of Zorics mouth, before blooming into a full grin. I laughed a small-embarrassed sound. “Darling, for the rest of my life I will never understand teen logic.” Mrs Ravenstone hugged her son; she turned bright laughing eyes in my direction. “Teen logic, far more advance than your regular logic.” I murmured. My face was bright red, and I could not look Zoric in the eye right at that moment. A chair scraped back on the stone floor, a hand patted my shoulder. “You two finish up, and then come into the library.” I nodded at Mr Ravenstone's instruction. “Smooth DragonSpire, you cleared the room. Mondo points for that one.” Zoric laughed quietly. I rolled my eyes. “I can’t believe that came out of my mouth, they must think I’m an utter moron.” I groaned cutting into my breakfast. Zoric only laughed again. “Frankie, they don’t think that. They love you; seriously, my mother wants to keep you. She thinks you are wonderful. Hell, I think I might have to be careful or my Dad will trade me to your Grandmother.” I could not hold it in any longer, I laughed aloud. “No, they wouldn’t, weirdo.” I chortled biting into my eggs. Zoric leaned back in his chair drinking his orange juice. I thought he was the best- looking male, I had ever seen. His earlier assessment of me was far from right, but it felt good to know that he liked me so much. I carefully cut my food into bite-sized pieces before I began. “You know I like you a lot too. I think you are charming and sweet, too gorgeous for your own good. You have those eyes, that when you smile light up, I like to make you smile. As for your brain, well, I like being able to have an in-depth conversation with someone and I know that you are with me at each step. As for your dragon, he is stunningly beautiful, he takes my breath away, and you astound me. What I am trying to say is that I don’t know what is happening between us either or where it is we’re going, but I like it and I would like to see where it leads.” I had sucked up as much courage as I could before I spoke the words aloud. I allowed myself a glance at him from under my lowered eyelashes...Zoric was not in his seat! Had he gotten up and left while I had been thinking and I had not realized it or had he walked out during my little speech. Doubts sprung from nowhere, assaulting me from every direction. “Frankie.” My head snapped around. Zoric was crouched beside me, his head level with mine. I swallowed the sudden lump, which had taken up residence in my throat. “Yes.” I murmured shakily forcing air through my lungs and mentally kicking myself for sounding like a coward. Zoric seemed to be getting closer, my eyes popped wide. Was he going to kiss me? I felt my heart skip a beat. He was so close now, I could see little amber flecks around his pupils, and they looked like little sparks of light in the darkness. He was only inches away now; I could taste his breath in my mouth. A shiver of anticipation curled up my spine. Swallowing, the last of my courage, I leaned forwards and pressed my lips to his. Our first kiss was...well it was nice. Zorics lips had been gentle on mine. He was the one to break contact; he pulled away from me slightly. It was then I realized that I had my hands in his hair. Colour raced up into my cheeks, I found myself looking at the floor embarrassed. “Are you two finished breakfast, Zoric your father has a few things he would like to discuss with you both.” Mrs Ravenstone's voice echoed in the front foyer and it was getting closer. A wicked smile split her son’s face he eyed the door. I knew what he was up to, I laughed quietly. He was deliberately going to kiss me again in front of his mother. I escaped off the other side of my chair, knocking Zoric out of his precarious crouch and onto his butt on the floor. I laughed silently watching him slowly get to his feet. I had foiled his plan. Mrs Ravenstone walked through the partially open door. “Are you two finish- oh you are wonderful. Francesca, are you alright you look a little flushed?” She placed her hand on my forehead. Zoric grinned he breathed on the back of his knuckles before rubbing them on the breast of his white shirt. “I’m fine. Zoric had me laughing again.” I replied truthfully. Zoric had made me laugh when he had fallen on his butt. His mother smiled. “Yes, he is very funny, now if you are both finished Solomon has a few things to talk to you about.”  I made to follow Mrs Ravenstone out the door. Zorics arm slipped around my waist; I leaned into him as we crossed the foyer. Before we made it to the library door, my dragon lifted her head deep within me; we stopped, still as the statues dotting the foyer. “Do you feel that?” I whispered. “Yeah, what is that?” Something was off, different. Mrs Ravenstone turned to stare at us. “Solomon, come quickly. Zoric, Francesca what is it?” She pressed one hand to her throat defensively. I sidestepped away from Zoric. I dropped into a crouch my back pressed against his leg, a growl of pure menace torn from my throat as my green eyes tracked the large room. “Francesca, what is it? Zoric what do you sense?” Solomon Ravenstone demanded, his incisors extended threateningly, eyes bright, in his left hand, he held a sword. His wife clutched a deadly sharp ornate dagger in one fist; she was crouched in the same defensive position as me. Shocking knowledge slammed through me, I let out a strangled cry. The sun had set behind the huge mountain ranges to the west. “Casper’s in danger!” I cried as I felt her terror engulf me. I sprang forwards, the door open before I reached it. A flash of light heralded my change. The ground shook as my huge dragon body ran, unfurling meters of wings. I lifted into the air with one mighty heave. My bulky body became light and fluid, I shot through the sky like a rocket.   Flashes of light, reds, and blues lit the night sky. Spells thrown thick and fast showed me the way, a beacon in the darkness. Sharp dragon eyes picked up the movement of a burnt brown creature, part dragon, part snake. The abomination looked sickeningly evil. Lucian’s orange and black form unmoving on the grass. Casper’s green and black scales glinted in the moonlight. She was backing away, one wing was torn and she was striking out with razor-sharp claws as she stood over her downed counterpart. Casper was roaring in pain. I tucked my wings tight into my body. Opening my mouth, a cry of fury cut the night. Flames burst from my throat, a stream of white-hot fire hit the creature, it screamed in agony. Casper’s great head lifted to the sky. I plummeted to earth like a huge, red ballistic missile. The creature had no time to escape. I was on top of it, in seconds. Tearing with claws and mighty fangs, bones cracked, shrill screams echoed in the darkness. I reared back screaming in rage, my tail lashed out hitting the foul beast with phenomenal force sending it crashing into a tree, the creature raised its head hissing defiantly, in agony. I moved to charge it again. I felt Zoric land behind me. Using my wings, I jumped landing on the creature, driving it into the ground. One claw raised to rip out it’s exposed throat. “Don’t kill him! It will bring the council down on our heads!” Mr Mentalis shouted. I leaned down, staring it in the eyes. “Go back to your master; if we meet again I will destroy you.” Releasing him, I backed off. I held myself tall, his blood dripped, a muddy liquid from the side of my snarling mouth. “Lester will return, changeling. Lester will kill you.” He threatened. The ground behind me shuddered. “Think, so do you?” Zorics deep timber rumbled from above me, his stance protective at my side. Lester’s eyes popped wide. “Bigger than the last, they are. Changelings grow, like daisies. Lester eats daisies.” He laughed wildly. A terrifying roar left my mouth, flames gathering in the back of my throat. Suddenly terrified, Lester unfurled his patchwork wings, he launched clumsily into the night sky, blood trailing behind him. Smoke curled from my nose as I swallowed the ball of flames. “Casper, are you alright? God, what happened?” I cried, turning my bulky body. My tail lifted, it curled around Zorics for a moment in welcome. Casper was lying on her side now; a flash of light had her breed body gasping on the grass-covered in sweat. One of her arms and side covered in blood. I cupped her body in huge claws. “Casper,” I whispered, frightened. I rocked her gently not knowing what to do. My scales made a rasping sound as they rubbed against themselves. Mr Mentalis crossed the yard at a run. I lowered my claws, gently putting Casper back on the grass. I hovered worriedly. “Casper, are you hurt, come on love open your eyes. Francesca, we are glad to see you. Lester appeared out of nowhere, he attacked them in their breed forms. Lucian changed to protect Casper. Lester caught him with a spell mid-transformation. Casper fought viciously. She was incredible. She lived up to her Montcastle name.” Luc’s dad stated. I looked over my shoulder. Just behind me was Lucian; his mother holding a thick spell book in her arms, where she crouched on the grass beside her son’s head. “Lucian, you must change back sweetheart. I cannot undo the spell while you are a dragon.” She pleaded tears falling in a steady stream down her cheeks. “Can’t, must, help, Casper.” He managed to hiss through his clenched teeth trying to get up again. The spell caused unimaginable agony each time he moved. Zoric lowered his head to his friend’s eye level. Lucian’s gaze locked with his. “Z-Zoric.” He whispered. “That my friend, was the sound of a very angry DragonSpire. Lester is gone. Frankie is with Casper; she is safe as houses mate. Big red over there will not let anything near her. I am here; I will guard you and your parents.” The huge black dragon promised. Lucian let out an agonized breath; the force of it knocked his mother over. She cursed. “Sorry, mum.” He muttered, there was a bright flash of light and Lucian Mentalis lay in the grass in his breed form. I stepped away from my cousin and friend. Zoric and I stood guard while the Mentalis’s worked. Shouts echoed from the sky above, we snarled instinctively twisting ourselves up onto our tails, preparing for a standing take-off. Smoke curled from my nostrils menacingly. Kadina and Magnus landed with twin heavy thuds. The ground trembled with their landing. Zoric and I relaxed a little as the two new dragons charged forward. “Kadina felt Casper’s fear. What happened, we got here as fast as we could?” Magnus demanded. Zoric stepped up to his friend. Kadina rushed to Casper, the ground trembled with her hasty movements. Lights split the night; five cars came tearing through the front gates. I breathed a sigh of relief and lay down, wrapping my tail around my body. “Hey big red, are you alright?” Magnus called eyeing me over Zorics shoulder. “Hey Mag, nice skin man. Not many guys can pull off bright yellow, but you rock that shade kid!” I laughed looking at his huge yellow and black form. “How rude! This is not yellow, it’s sunshine dandelion! It’s the new black.” He replied with a wink. I laughed low in my throat. “Sunshine dandelion, I love it.” I chortled slapping one claw on the grass. “Ah Frankie are you alright and what’s with the brown goo?” He asked, his top lip curled up over his teeth in distaste. “Hmm, I’m good. The goo is blood. Lester and I got into it. You know, I just ate breakfast, like literally fifteen minutes ago, and I am starving! Being a Dragon’s going to make me fat.” I grumbled. Magnus laughed a husky bark. Zoric shook his head. The Ravenstone's, Mr and Mrs Venturi, Mrs DesCor, Grandma and Poppa ran across the lawn. Grandma looked from me to Casper painfully torn. “Casper needs you, I’m good.” I rumbled out one side of my mouth. Grandma flashed me a grateful smile; she patted one of my claws as she hurried passed. Poppa stopped in front of my blood-covered snout, resting on my dirty front claws. He frowned. “What is that?” He wrinkled his nose distastefully, indicating the dark goo across my muzzle and still dripping from one side of my mouth. I crossed my eyes to look down at my snout. Poppa chuckled softly at seeing a huge red, terror-inspiring dragon cross her eyes. “It’s Lester’s blood, he attacked Casper and Lucian. A spell caught Luc halfway into the change. Zoric and I were in the foyer when we felt something. It was Casper, she was in pain and scared. There was such fear! If I live half the life you have, I will never forget the feeling.” I replied peering back at my grandfather. I had not realized the other parents had gathered before me. Zoric, Magnus, and Kadina sat silently, sentinels protecting their families. Their eyes, constantly scanning the skies. I knew Lester would not return this night, I’d torn through him with all my strength. “Frankie ran out of the house before I could even move; it took me a little time to catch her. She’s quick. When I got here, Frankie was ripping Lester apart. Mr Mentalis told her not to kill him. The council would attack us. It’s the only reason he is still living. She told Lester if she saw him, again, she would destroy him. We may as well sit back and put our feet up, because Frankie handed ol’ Lester his tail, with change.” Zoric mentioned in an offhand manner. I flicked a gaze up to him. He winked. “It was pretty hot huh.” I chortled. Magnus and Kadina chuckled, deep rolling tones. Another laugh came from beside me. A hand rest on the crook of my foreleg. I turned my great-wedged shaped head. Lucian stood by my side. “Hey man, how was your sleep? That would be right, sitting on your tail while the rest of us do all the work.” I teased. Lucian grinned. I moved my tail, and he shot me a grateful glance before sitting down on it. “Seriously though guys, thanks for the save. Lester wasn’t here for us. He was here for my parents. It shocked the hell out of him tonight because he was not expecting you.” Lucian told us. My sharp gaze captured Poppa’s he nodded. “What do you mean, me?” I asked seriously, looking down at my friend. “He thought Cass and I used a spell to transform, that’s why he cursed me. You should have seen his face when he saw you, Frankie, he was scared out of his mind. I thought he was reacting to Casper at first. Then I saw Zoric and he said the sounds I heard belonged to a really angry DragonSpire. Lester was afraid of you.” Lucian finished tiredly getting back to his feet. I moved my tail, and Lucian leaned gratefully against my scaled shoulder. “The council has ordered the capture and detainment of six families, one guess who those six are,” Poppa stated running a frustrated hand through his hair. I frowned thoughtfully. “I don’t care what the council said, Lester was not here to capture. He was here to kill, he lunged for Mrs Mentalis, and he was going to eat her. Lucian got in the way. If we hadn’t been here Mrs and Mrs Mentalis would be dead.” Casper’s voice was a little weak; she came around to stand in front of me I looked down my snout at her. “I have never been as scared as I was tonight. When Luc went down, I was sure the monster was going to kill us. Then I heard this scream and saw flames coming out of the sky. I really thought I was going to die. I looked up and this giant red ball of pure fury was streaking right at Lester. You should have seen it, Dorian, it was as if I was looking at Barnok DragonSpire. The air around you Frankie was electrified, there was so much power. I-I watched you tear Lester apart, there was no fear. Only pure fury. You were awesome Frankie and when Zoric rose behind you, I knew Luc, his parents and I were safe. Thank you.” The others were grinning, a tear splashed onto my scales, it rolled down my snout. Steam rose off it. Casper held out her hands, as it met her skin the tear was a solid diamond, the size of a basketball. I sniffed. “Hey ah, no problem Spooky, you would have done the same for me.” I rumbled embarrassed. Zoric chuckled. I poked my tongue at him, ringing laughter from the older breed around us. “I don’t think I will ever get used to that. Dorian, have you in all the centuries you have lived ever seen a Dragon poke their tongue, at someone?” Mr Venturi asked around a laugh. Poppa smiled widely. “I cannot say that I have, but Francesca is one of a kind.” He replied patting the side of my face. I rolled my eyes. “Yuk, Yuk, everyone’s a comedian. Laugh it up you lot. Mrs Mentalis could I use your hose, this stuff smells like shi-nasty.” I head Kadina and Magnus snigger. Mrs Mentalis pointed to the side of the house. “How about you go stand there Francesca and I will have Tomas turn on the sprinklers.” She advised. Lucian stepped away from me; he wrapped one arm around Casper’s shoulders. I got up and followed Mrs Mentalis. She told me to stand right in the middle of the yard. She called out to Tomas, a split second later I heard a rhythmic ticking. Dozens of sprinkler heads popped out of the ground and the wall of the house. They pelted me with water from all angles. The trees next to me had them in their branches too. I laughed as the water hit my underbelly. “Ha-ha, look a Dragon-wash. Do I get a complimentary buff and polish too? You know Mrs Mentalis you could make a fortune with this.” I called happily, lifting one foot, the jets had me fee of Lester’s blood in minutes. Tomas turned off the water. I stood dripping wet. Poppa was laughing uproariously. Zoric had one claw over his mouth, but I could still see his giant form shaking with suppressed laughter. Coiling my tail under me, I twisted, springing off the ground I shot into the sky. Water ran off me in a geyser. I circled the house once before coming in to land beside my friends. I turned my big head. “Thanks, Mrs Mentalis, it’s good to be clean. That goo burned a little. What do you think Poppa, are we safe enough for now, will he come back?” I looked critically back up at the sky. “I don’t know Francesca, what do you feel?” I looked around me, thinking. “It feels alright. Nothing evil like it did before, I think we’re good.” Magnus answered. “You wounded him badly Frankie, he won’t be back for a while.” Zoric rumbled. The four of us looked at each other. We nodded as one. Lights flashed as we settled back to our breed forms. I had completely forgotten about my lack of make-up. Kadina’s stomach gave that moment to growl. I chuckled throwing an arm around her shoulders. “So how ‘bout a post-victory feast, I am keen?” I announced. Casper held up the huge diamond. “Yeah, this should cover it.” She laughed. Poppa shook his head; he took the diamond off her. “Casper Montcastle, this is not just any diamond. This is a changeling stone and we will need five more to defeat the Demon Lord if he has risen again.” I crossed the space between us. “So, start crying people, and let’s get this over with,” I announced. “I am afraid it does not work that way, dearest. The red is the only dragon capable of making such a stone and is only able to when the tears come from the heart or great sorrow.” Poppa explained. “Well, that sucks,” Casper grumbled. Curiously, I put my hands over the stone, it glowed at my touch. Poppa sucked in a shocked breath when it began to pulse with light. I felt pure energy wash over me. “Oh, that’s so good! Casper, Lucian, Kadina come here you have to feel this. Zoric, Mag you too.” I called excitedly. They came running. I grasped them around the wrists, I held them tightly and pressed their hands to the stone, at once it pulsed faster. Casper groaned leaning into my back. Lucian shuddered, his body relaxing into my side. Zoric cupped the back of my neck and he too reached out to touch the stone. Magnus and Kadina both put a hand on my outstretched arms we all cradled the stone. Poppa stared down at us, through his connection to the stone he felt us, the undeniable power of the Changelings. It was beautiful. I allowed my hands to drop, I felt relaxed and empowered all at once. Casper and Lucian’s energy regenerated. We all felt strong again. Grandma stepped forward, her manner all business. I eyed her seriously. “Alright, yes I know that was a lot of fun, we have, much to discuss and we cannot do it here. We need a defensible position; we have enemies on three sides we know of. The council, Lester, and the demon, we will need allies. We cannot fight all three alone.” She stated in her no-nonsense tone. “I suppose you will want to use the Spire then,” Poppa remarked flashing me a quick wink. I looked up at Zoric, lifting a shoulder in a slight shrug. Grandma spun to face my grandfather, her face lit up like Christmas. “Perfect.” Mrs DesCor laughed pulling Kadina into her side. “Yes, Dorian it would be perfect. The Spire is impregnable, the dragon spells would stop them using magic to get in, the crags would keep out any army they could conjure. It would have to be a group decision.” Grandma warned seriously looking around. “There is no thought, Monique, our families are in danger. Our children in desperate need of training if they are to face the demon lord and live. As brave and well as Francesca fought tonight, she is still a fledgling like the rest of them.” Roman Venturi stated, his wife curved herself into his side holding him tightly, tonight demonstrated how venerable they all were to attack. “You haven’t actually met. Mum, Dad this is Francesca DragonSpire. Frankie, Roman, and Japara Venturi.” Mag introduced me to his parents. I grinned. “Hi.” They both smiled. “It is a pleasure to meet you.” They both said with smiles of their own. “If you lot will excuse us; we have things to discuss,” Grandma said motioning for us to move away and talk amongst ourselves. I peeked over my shoulder. Magnus waved us over, he had paced a distance away. “What’s up, man?” Zoric asked. We stood in a circle, hands by our sides our shoulders touching. “The Spire, what is it?” Lucian looked at me, they all turned eyes to me. I shrugged. “All I know is Poppa lives there. Anything else, I cannot say.” I replied sourly. “It was the original home of your ancestors Frankie, jeez didn’t your Dad tell you anything?” Casper cried out in exasperation leaning around Lucian. “Okay, let’s do a recap of events, just for Casper! The only reason I know what the DragonSpire coat of arms looks like and I am one; is because MUM BRANDED IT INTO MY GODDAMN SIDE!” I yelled, pulling my shirt up to show her and then down to cover my scars once more. The adults heard, their heads turned towards us. I left the circle. Stalking away from my friends. “Frankie, I-I didn’t mean it like that,” Casper called after me shaken. Lucian hugged her. “Whatever Casper!” I threw back over my shoulder. I heard my cousin groan. “I forgot about her parents. I didn’t mean it like that. Gods, how could they have done that to her? She is their only child.” She told them sadly. “Think before you open your mouth next time Montcastle. Being a DragonSpire doesn’t mean she hasn’t got feelings.” Zoric growled. I could feel his gaze on my back. “The Spire is my home. I have lived there since my birth, but I have not seen it in months. It was originally a huge cave, filled with separate smaller caverns. I believe I mentioned DragonSpires have dragon blood within them.” I nodded my head, listening intently to my grandfather. “No kidding.” I murmured. Poppa had approached me silently. “The story goes that a Dragon kidn*pped a breed female by the name of Morgiana Spire. For many months, the creature kept her trapped in his cave unable to escape. Morgiana was a talented witch, though her magic could not work against her captor, she turned herself into a dragon to defeat him, but he was stronger. He took her as his mate forcing her to bear his young and thus the line of DragonSpire. This is Codswallop. The true story is, the people in her village hated Morgiana Spire, they threw rocks at her when she passed and spat on her. Regina Spire, her mother was a rich woman, who had an affair with another male. When she discovered she was pregnant; she told her husband an Incubus ravaged her in her dreams. Lord Vostik Spire urged his wife to term, hoping that she would carry a male, he could in turn use this child as his heir, but the child was a female. They gave her to the village witch, who in turn raised the child, she called her Morgiana.  As she grew, the witch discovered her charge possessed great magic; the entire breed feared her for the power she possessed. Morgiana died for a few minutes during her transition. This told the village she was evil; the witch who raised her, died soon after her wards transition and Morgiana was cast from the village. Barnok the Dragon did not kidnap Morgiana; she came to him. Morgiana saw Barnok resting in the moonlight one rising, she thought him the most wonderful of creatures, and she fell for him on the spot. Waiting for him to wake she followed him back to his mountain cave. Barnok thought her a hunter until he had her almost in his mouth. She did not cry, flinch, or scream. She stared up at him with eyes so wide, he not she was the prisoner. Morgiana turned herself Dragon to be with her love and thus began the DragonSpire line.”  Poppa sat next to me on the ground. “Morgiana and a dragon. That’s a bit gross Poppa.” My head spun, a breed fell in love with a dragon. Eww! I thought. “Francesca, dragons were shapeshifters, able to become human,” Poppa growled partly amused. “Oh right. Thank goodness for that, cause the picture in my head was all kinds of wrong. I was thinking Morgiana didn’t need wedding vows, she needed a psychiatrist and a time out.” I muttered. Poppa shot me a mock glare. “Morgiana was my grandmother; she taught me many things, Francesca. My parents and grandparents built the Spire castle, with its monstrous rooms and hidden passageways. I played for hours in there, my grandmother chasing me, her laugh was infectious. The more she did it, the easier it was for her to find me because I was laughing too. My grandfather, the dragon Barnok told the best stories. They were the ones who told me the real tale about our line. When I was but a small child, Barnok would walk through the Spire with me sitting on his shoulder, there were too many stairs and I would tire easily, so he would carry me. You would have loved them and they you; your father was born after their death, so he did not have the pleasure. They died together as is the way with Dragons. The Spire is a part of your heritage Francesca, do not let your poor excuses for parents poison it. Selene’s ideas have befouled Benson’s mind so much that I will not share the Spire with him. We have had many fights on the subject, which is what Selene wants. She wants the Spire and hell will freeze over before she gets it. Once I am gone, it will be yours to carry on the DragonSpire line. As for your mother branding you with the DragonSpire coat of arms. You have been a DragonSpire since birth; your scar just proves it.” Poppa hugged me. I held tightly. “I just bit Casper’s head off.” I sighed. Poppa shrugged. “Unfortunately, your cousin speaks before she thinks. Ignore her.” “Thank you, Poppa. Um do you think we could get something to eat now, I am starving?” I murmured against his shirt, he chuckled. “Of course, dearest, we cannot have you fading away now can we.” I grinned getting slowly to my feet. “Poppa, Grandma said the Spire was protected by Dragon Spells, what does that mean?” “It means dear one, exactly what it says. Dragon Spells protect it.” I thought for a minute. “Oh right, dragons have magic. Barnok and Morgiana cast spells to protect their home. Why am I so mentally challenged, god I’m slow?” I grumbled. Poppa chuckled, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “Everything is well. Monique, she is fine calm down.” He called as we approached the group of breed still standing on the Mentalis’s front lawn. Stepping away from my grandfather, I crossed to Casper. “Sorry, I should not have spoken to you like that,” I told her. She hugged me. “I’m sorry too, I was an insensitive toe-rag. You probably should have kicked me for it.” She replied. I coughed, covering a laugh. I stepped back; Zoric was behind me he clamped his arms around my waist, his chin resting on my head. I felt better instantly. “The Spire is Poppa’s home, it’s a big castle with monstrous rooms and secret passageways. It has caves running under and behind it and it used to be the home of my great-great-grandparents Morgiana and Barnok.” “What’s the deal with that? Did your great-grandma really hook up with a dragon?” Kadina whispered, leaning forward. “Dragons were shapeshifters. They could be human when they wanted.” I answered casually. “Oh yeah. You know, now the stories about your family are making a little more sense.” Luc muttered. The others breathed out in relief, nodding. “I know right! I was hardcore freaking out until Poppa set the record straight. As I was saying. The Spire is also protected by Dragon and breed spells.” I stated with a big grin, I had the knowledge and it was useful. “Cool, sounds awesome. While you were on a mission. The parentals decided, the Spire is the place to be. We are leaving as soon as we are packed. Our respective parentals have called home and organized for our staff to handle it. All we have to do is continue to be our awesome selves and get our rather sizable backsides on a plane.” Magnus told me as we made our way closer to the parentals. Kadina rubbed her stomach. “Do you think there will be food?” She had to mention food again, my stomach gave a mighty growl, and Zoric echoed it. “Yeah I’m starving; what time is it?” He looked at his father. Mr Ravenstone shook his wrist and looked down at the watch. “Seven o’clock. Why, do you have somewhere pressing to be tonight son?” Zoric pulled a face, his father laughed. “You’re a funny bloke Dad, a real comedian I can’t believe Mrs Toad ever called you charming.” Zorics mother’s head turned, a frown planted across her mouth. “Mrs Toad said you were charming. Why, what did you do?” Solomon glared at his son. Zoric hugged me tighter. “You’re a brat.” I laughed softly. He grinned at his friends they discreetly clapped hands. “Nice one man,” Lucian called softly; Casper elbowed him lightly in the ribs. “I’m going to enjoy seeing him get out of that one.” Magnus chortled. Kadina stood on his foot. “All right kids time to go.” Mrs Venturi called loudly. She waved us over. Poppa held out his hand. “You get to ride with me. I have something I would like to speak with you about.” He stated. “Great, as long as your first words are, here Frankie, eat this while I speak,” I replied making my grandfather laugh. Zoric released me, my good feeling evaporated abruptly; I just knew there was something was going on. “I’ll see you at the airport.” He muttered. He could feel the apprehension growing inside me. “They’re up to something. Don’t trust their smiles. I can smell fear and determination. That combination does not bode well for our futures.” I whispered. Waving to the others, I followed Poppa to his car. I lay down on one of the back seats. Poppa reached out and opened a little compartment. He tossed me a packet of BBQ chips. “Mmm chips yum, thank you.” I cried. The wonderful chips smell met my nose and made my mouth water. Poppa shook his head at me; people seemed to do that a lot around me I thought as I started to devour the content of the little packet. “Francesca, what is between you and Zoric Ravenstone?” I stopped eating, my gaze sharpening abruptly, snapped to my grandfather's. He was looking at me and using a very serious voice. So, this was the game. I thought critically. “Don’t you like him?” I asked curiously sitting up. “I like the boy just fine, he is a very excellent young male. I asked what you think of him and what is between you?” I sighed, reaching for the right words. “I like him...a lot. He is smart, kind, and seriously hot. I want to see and hear him all the time. For the first time in my life, he had made me feel worth something. I talk to him and he listens. I’ve never had that before, apart from with you. It feels as if he is a part of me somehow. I know what he is feeling when he feels it because I can feel it too. I do not think it is just the post-transition hormones. Poppa, I think it may be something else, something more. As to what is between us, I cannot tell you with certainty. You see I am not so sure, and neither is Zoric.” I explained the best I could. Poppa leaned back in his seat his brow creased. “What about the Falcon boy?” “Tristin is a conundrum. I still don’t know what the connection is. He’s a little strange when he is with his friends; his eyes are cold. When he is alone, it’s like he’s the opposite and only portraying the brute.” I shrugged. “The reason I ask these questions Francesca is not to invade your privacy. You are Changelings, and this makes you more Dragon than the breed. Dragons mate for life dearest. I believe you did not just inherit the Changeling genes but their very souls. You are the red and he is the black, which is how it was before. The black and red were a mated pair. They died at the same time. You can see why I am concerned; you are both far too young to mate. You’re Grandmother and the Ravenstones are terrified, if one of you dies so will the other.” “That is ridiculous. It takes years for dragons to bond Poppa. You know that better than anyone.” I replied. Knowing this instinctively. “I know dearest. They are demanding you and Zoric stay away from each other. They will begin enforcing it immediately.” I masked my reaction, allowing my face to settle into its usual expression of bored disdain. Questions and answers flew through my head at rapid speeds. It explained a lot. How I could feel him, the need to be close, the sense that I knew him absolutely. A sadness and a sense of loss sometimes, then he would walk into the room or call my name and it would vanish as if it had never been but stay away from Zoric. I inwardly shuddered at the thought. “I get my strength from Zoric Poppa; I cannot have you take him from me. Zoric and I cannot be separated; already it would kill us both.” I told him calmly, not allowing him to see how wounded I was. Poppa sat forward, he clasped my much smaller hand in his. “Francesca, I know this is hurting you. Anyone else would not see it, but I know you too well. I am not trying to take Zoric from you. I am merely saying; you and he cannot bond. If you both die, it will reopen the wound that started the feud and the six will part again. You are not the only one; the others are having this same talk with their parents. Francesca, there is a vast quantity that we do not know about, especially regarding changelings. I have a whole library in the Spire filled to brimming with the knowledge of dragons and that of the changelings. All you need do is look. Now wipe the worried look of your face, I will say no more on the subject. Now to other matters, we have decided your lessons will continue. The difference will be that we, the other parents, and I will be your teachers.” I gaped at him so shocked I dropped the mask protecting my emotions. “You’re going to teach us, what are you going to teach?” I asked stonily. Poppa became serious the car began to slow. “I will be teaching you how to fight like a dragon. We are here. Please remember Francesca, we do this not to be cruel but to help you survive. I will not lose you, I cannot.” He said, his door opened, I followed him out on to the tarmac, a plane waited. “It’s alright Poppa. I once told you I was Montcastle and DragonSpire, and stronger than both. It is true; I am stronger than the blood in my veins. I have been tortured before, there is nothing anyone can do to me now that would hurt more than I have already experienced. I certainly hope it gives you and Grandma some comfort while you’re watching us lose our minds.” I informed him coolly. The door of the medium-sized cargo plane was open and the stairs ready to receive passengers and cargo. Poppa sucked in a pained breath at my words. My gaze hunted the small crowd for the one face I needed to see. He was staring right at me; there was no denying I’d been crying. Mr Ravenstone clasped the back of Zorics neck forcing him to make eye contact with his father. Ignoring Poppa, I hurried across the tarmac to Kadina and Casper; they looked just as forlorn as I felt. Zoric was shuddering inside. His pain was acute. I paled further. Mags mother crossed the pitch-black ground with purposeful strides, she stopped before the terrifying DragonSpire ancient, suppressing her shudder of fear, of being so close. “Dorian, look at them, you cannot go along with this madness! Already, they are lost. Look at them!” Mrs Venturi whispered. “Japara, Francesca just dealt me a deep wound. I already believe our children and grandchildren’s souls are of the changelings we allowed to be killed.” Poppa pinched the bridge of his nose; he closed his eyes tightly for a moment. Japara Venturi gasped, one hand flying to her throat, shock clouded her vision. “If you are right Dorian, it is too late. Our children are already bonded and this, this torture my husband, Solomon, and Monique thought up, will kill them anyway.” She whispered brokenly, turning she looked back at her son. “Francesca said it will drive them to madness. I pray it does not come to that Japara.” He murmured. Magnus hunched over, his shoulders curled into his chest. She wondered if he were in physical pain, but then she saw his eyes, his gaze rested on Kadina Fontain DesCor and never wavered. “Dorian, do you suppose they can communicate with one another telepathically?” She turned back to the frightening ancient. He shrugged a casual ripple of movement. “Dragons could communicate with their mate telepathically, changelings though I am not sure. Francesca told me she could feel what Zoric is feeling. Where he is concerned, she is empathic. She is floundering with both their emotions, look at her, she is drowning. I was the one to push her overboard. I deserve what she said to me. In this instance, I am as much a monster as her parents.” Dorian hissed clenching a fist. “No Dorian, you are not. Francesca is hurting, she didn’t mean it. She loves you, you can see it when she looks at you.” Japara murmured. The captain called to them, loading had finished it was time to board.   I stepped forward I was a little shaky. The weight of Zoric and my feelings were a heavy pack to carry. “Zoric, I don’t know what to do, this is insane. They are being ridiculous.” I cried out in my mind. Zoric flinched, almost stumbled. “I know Frankie. We would never be stupid enough to bond while we are still so young. The parentals are barking mad.” He turned his head, dark eyes burning into mine. “Oh, my Gods! Can you hear me?” I whispered within my mind. “Of course, I can, gorgeous. It’s alright, just breathe babe. We’ll get through this. I’m loving this telepathy, I can feel how you feel about me through our mind link.” Zoric winked at me, fighting to hide his smile. This revelation almost made me laugh aloud. I tried it again, this time I pictured hugging him. As soon as my mental arms locked around his waist, we both sighed. Colour rushed back into my face. He stood up straighter. I tried it with Casper and Kadina at the same time; it was as if we were touching. “Oh dudes, check it out. New secret squirrel power alert! Reach out to Luc and Mag with your minds. I did it to Zoric and now I am touching him, Nah, Nah, nana, Nah! Parentals owned! Changelings- one, parentals- Zero.” I called silently. Casper’s eyes popped wide, Kadina almost tripped over her feet. The side of my mouth tipped up in a small secret smile, I knew when they had succeeded. Lucian laughed suddenly, before smothering it quickly with one hand. Zoric nudged him with one shoulder, shaking his head quickly. Magnus almost fell down the stairs. He put one hand over one cheek of his butt in shock. Kadina had pinched him on the butt and the parentals did not have a clue. “Japara does that answer your question,” Dorian asked nodding in our direction. Mrs Venturi turned to look at her son and Kadina. They looked happy again. She grinned. “Any chance they are going to tell us about their new-found abilities?” She wondered aloud. “Not a chance my dear. Would you?” Dorian answered with a chuckle. He strode forward towards the stairs. Pushing out his mind, he encompassed all six fledglings. “Don’t let your parents see you so happy with your new toys. Solomon, Roman, and Monique were the ones demanding the separation. I would advise caution.” All six pairs of eyes jumped guiltily to his when he entered the plane. He kept his face serene. One look at his granddaughter tried his countenance. He fought hard to keep a straight face. “I am sorry Poppa.” “I know dearest heart. You were forgiven the moment the words left your mouth, it figures you would find a way to defy your Grandmother, brat.” I was trying not to laugh. I should have guessed Poppa would have known. He probably felt the subtle change in power. I was glad he knew. I was going to tell him anyway when we got to the Spire. I did not want to keep things from him and I was sorry for the horrible things I had said to him. Poppa sat next to me. He nudged me with an elbow. “You’re grounded by the way. What you are doing is going against my wishes.” He murmured. I arched one thin brow. “Didn’t you just say it was Grandma, Mr Ravenstone, and Mr Venturi’s idea? So technically I am going against Grandma and you’re an accessary after the fact.” I murmured back from the corner of my mouth. I saw Poppa’s chest shake with his silent chuckle. He rolled his eyes. “Fine, but you are still grounded.” He continued. “It doesn’t bother me, where am I going to go...snorkelling? I am going to be stuck in the Spire for the Gods only know how long.” I answered sarcastically in the same low voice. Poppa snarled menacingly, causing the other inhabitants of the plane to jump in shocked fright. They each held their breath in the wake of Dresdorian’s displeasure. “I’m not afraid of you. The big bad Dresdorian DragonSpire, the ancient terror. Pooh!” I muttered. Poppa suddenly engulfed my head with his arm. He trapped me and rubbed the tops of his knuckles on my head. I laughed, fighting to get free. He held firm, as I struggled. “Alright, alright you’re scary, a big mean vampire! The meanest big mean vampire in the world. You make Dracula look like a Teletubbie!” I shrieked, my head still pressed into his chest. He let me go. “Good, lesson learned, naughty disrespectful girl.” He muttered. I sat up my hair was frizzled out everywhere. I glared up at him. The rest of the plane seemed to relax. “Look what you did; now I look like I’ve been struck by lightning.” I huffed. Grandma handed me a brush out of her handbag. I murmured a quick thank you as I attacked the now electrified mass attached to my smarting head. “I like it, it’s fresh.” Poppa teased. I laughed. “Gods Poppa you are such a goof.” At that moment, I loved him more than anything.
