TRAINING WITH THE BETA

Chapter 7 Bianca's pov “Faster... run!” the beta, Ric, shouted behind me as I ran the 10 kilo assigned to me. To him, it might be a small run, but I’m facing hell here. But still, I have to do it. I can't be a Luna without being a fast runner, and someday I'll run even better than the beta. I looked back and saw him focused on my moves. Just hope I got it. I'll show him. I added to my pace. I could feel his muscles tense. I’m not, after all, as weak as he thought. I got to the endpoint and fell flat on the field. The lycan’s brutality was still evident—but not much. I wondered why?! Did he heal me after taking me, or is it just my little wolf trying to help in her own little way? It had been silent after last night, and I wondered why. “You weren’t that bad after all,” I heard the beta say as he walked up to me with Jerry trailing behind him. “You passed the racing test today. Tomorrow, your next race will be in the woods.” “Huh?” “I don’t care if you’re adjusted to it—you’ll run another 10-meter race in the woods, and you know just how many obstacles you’ll face.” “I’m not sending a wolf after you yet. That will come later.” “What?” I gasped. I’ll also race with a wolf after me? I looked up at him and saw his eyes fixed on me, as if waiting for me to digest what he said. “And what if I get caught?” I asked, just to be sure I won’t die in the woods. “What do you think?” “Wh... what... do I think?” I asked carefully. It better not be what I’m thinking. Did the king put him up to this? Is he that eager to get rid of me? “I can’t die in the woods by a wolf.” I heard him chuckle. What the f*****g hell is funny here? My fate has been decided and this sly beta is making fun of it. “Nobody is dying. Certainly not you... the lycan’s mate.” Okay?! What’s that now! “You’ll be sent out of the palace as a nobody,” he said, and I unknowingly exhaled. Just how long had I been holding my breath? Still, that isn’t even right. What about the test the king told me to figure out? I looked at the beta. Might he be lying? The lycan himself said my test is figuring out that which he assigned me, and I’d be marked... so what’s the beta saying? Has he no knowledge of the lycan’s test?! Or maybe he’s trying to imbue fear in me. “I’ll do the race, and I assure you—I’ll win,” I said to his face, more like a challenge. Looking at him, his words earlier this morning kept repeating. I’d need to talk to him to clarify things. I want to know what he really wants from me. The king’s position is not one to be tampered with. It was inherited. Centuries ago, the late lycan, Ignatius Ajero—the first lycan who fought and won the battle between the werewolves and the dragons. The silver-haired fae. It was said that the crown was given to him after he led the battle and won. It has been so until it got to lycan Lucan. Of course, he had all the qualities, but they said something happened which got the moon goddess angered. The present lycan had done something—only he knows what—that delayed his crowning. If not for some sacrifices and rituals, the king wouldn’t have been crowned. It only means that the king's title is a heritage. It will only run in the family and nowhere else. So whatever the beta is thinking is impossible. It’s either he’s an enemy with something up his sleeve, or he’s playing a prank on me—which, probably, the king will know of. I shall talk things out with him to know exactly what he wants. I refuse to be a tool for his caricature. And I refuse to partake in his evil plots if he turns out to be an enemy. I followed him to the battleground with Jerry and two other guards. Knives, daggers, spears, and all sorts of advanced weapons were wielded and hung around the room. The large ring for battle—it could be a competition or some sort of practice. The ones in the ring stepped out and bowed to the beta before leaving the room. “Your main training begins here and now.” He grabbed a long knife with bladed teeth and threw it to me—I caught it... damn! With shaky hands, I slowly held the knife properly. Was he planning to kill me?! I looked up at him and he smirked... very annoying. Then he clapped. Clapped?! I stared at him. “You did great,” he said, walking to me. He took the knife from me and held it. He did some turns with it. Just like a flash, he brought it down to my neck and I bent—damn, I did bend. “The two women warriors that faced your kind of training died even before they could start... so I must say—” “You amaze me.” “Luna,” he whispered the last part in my ear. “What’s happening here?” A cold nasal voice rang in the room. Without being told, you'd know who. The beta shifted from me and bowed with the rest. I was tempted to do the same, but instead, I looked up at him. His sharp jaw clenched, the gritting of his teeth, and his gold eyes glaring daggers at his beta. “Leave. All of you.” Without further ado, they all went out, leaving just me. I wondered within myself if I wasn’t part of “all of you.” I took a step forward to go... “And where do you think you’re going?!”
