Fikayo's POV
"Fikayo, aren't you ready. Don't make me late on the first-day." Tola yells probably from the living room.
I woke up around 4 am to cook food for the whole family and now it's just seven am, shey I didn't try? I've not yet eaten, and it seems like I won't eat this morning.
"How many years does she want to spend dressing up." I hear Tolu say as I approach the living room.
"I wonder too." Tola puts in.
"I'm ready before you people kill me with words." I say as I approach them.
My Dad must have gone to work, and my stepmother must have gone to her shop.
They walk out of the house and I follow behind them. We enter the car and I sit at the front seat then the driver zooms off.
*********
"OMG, you've become more pretty. I've missed you so much." Sade shouts immediately she sees me.
"I've missed you as well."I reply while hugging her.
We chat about different things till we reach the class where we pick a seat at the front in the middle row. We drop our bags and sit down.
"Have you heard the latest news?" Sade says, sounding excited.
"No, what news is that." I say, shifting my body towards her.
"Well, the news is that a new student is resuming to our class today." She flashes her set of white teeth.
"So, what's special about this new student?" I ask her.
"A boy! The new student is a boy, not just any boy o. Hmmm, this guy is fresh!" She exclaims. I was even expecting her to say something important that makes sense. Well it's typical of her to fangirl over boys.
"And so what. Wetin be my concern. That's his business na. See Sade. We are writing Waec and Utme this year. One 'fresh' boy cannot come and disturb me from my studies." I let out.
"Aba, you this girl and your studies. You are too naive, jhoor. I didn't say that you should let him disturb you na. What I was trying to say is that the drama will be much this year because of him." She explains.
"Oh, that's what you meant. We'll talk about that later jare. The teacher is here." I say when the teacher entered.
"Hello, class, welcome to a new session. I'm Mr Adesuyi. I'll be your Class teacher for this session. I hope you all cooperate with the other teachers and me to ensure success in your upcoming exams." The teacher says but the principal's entrance interrupts him.
"OMG, he's very handsome!" Sade whispers and squeals into my ears as she secretly points the boy beside the principal to me.
I look behind the principal to see who she is talking about, and shock grips me when I see him. He looks so much like my childhood friend, but I'll confirm when he introduces himself.
"Good morning, class. How was your holiday? A new student is here to join you today." The principal says, and the whole class starts murmuring.
"Introduce yourself to the class." He nods towards the boy.
"Hi everyone, I'm Ayomide, and I hope to have a good time with you guys." He says and smirks mainly at girls who are already gushing about him.
Ayomide. That's the name of my childhood friend. Back then, I called him Ayomi, and we were very close until my mother died.
When my mom died, he was part of those who blamed me for it. He stopped our friendship and said that he regretted befriending a killer like me.
I remember how it happened very well because I was hurt. I was just a young girl who had to go through a lot of pain alone.
Now he's back. The sweet boy I knew back then might have turned into a player.
"It seems like you are very welcome here. Find somewhere to seat." The principal, Mr Adetoro, says and leaves the class.
"Sit with me." A girl named Tayo says, looking at Ayomide with dreamy eyes. The nerve of these girls.
"I think I'll pass. Maybe some other day." He replies her and smirks. I don't understand why guys these days don't know any other thing than to smirk, as if smiling is a crime to them.
"Ayomide it seems like you can't choose a place to sit. Go sit with Adura at the back." Mr Adesuyi orders Ayomide, pointing out Adura's seat to him and whole class continues mummuring.
"You people can not shut up abi. Your mouths are just moving like that of chickens." Mr Adesuyi shouts out of anger.
"You are all going to write your WAEC, NECO and UTME exams very soon, and you are here talking like fools. This school can not afford to bring up failures. You all better buckle up and focus on your studies rather than being distracted by little things!" He yells angrily, and the class becomes quite immediately.
"As I said before, I'm Mr Adesuyi, your class teacher. Firstly, let's pick a class captain and an assistant." He announces.
"If you are interested in any of the positions and you are sure that you are capable, come out." He declares and the class starts mummuring again. Immediately, students start coming out-the likes of Tade, Sola, David, and Tolu, my step sister.
"I feel like we should also contest for this position." Sade declares quietly, looking at me with a grin.
"Contest for wetin. See this girl o. If I contest, who will vote for me apart from you?" I question her.
"You better don't let me embarrass myself today. But you can try it out, and it won't be a surprise if you win." I mumble quietly, not wanting the teacher to scold me.
"Ok, oo. That's your wahala. As for me eehn, I'm contesting." She says and walks out.
Surprisingly, Ayomide comes out. When he came out, the murmuring started again, mainly from the girls.
For the first time since he came, I am able to look at him without bothering about anyone noticing since they are all engrossed with the class captain stuff.
He looks stunning, and I am captivated by his face. He looked cute while giving reasons why we should vote for him.
"If you vote for Sade, raise your hands." Mr Adesuyi's voice brings me back from my trance. More than half of the class voted for her, including me.
"If you vote for Ayomide, raise your hands," he says again. Almost all the students in the class raised their hands, except me. Just because he has a fine face doesn't mean he would me a good class captain.
"From the outcome of our poll, the assistant class captain is Sade." He announces.
Sade grins while my stepsister, Tola, frowns her face. She must have expected to be the winner.
"And the class Captain is Ayomide." Mr Adesuyi declares. The students cheer. They are happy that the 'fresh' boy is their class captain. What a life!
"Do your jobs well. If not, remember that you can be impeached." He tells the new class captain and assistant, Sade and Ayomide.
"Go and call your teacher for the next period." He says and leaves the class.
The following periods pass by with teachers giving us scheme of work and other things that they are ment to do on the first day of resumption. Girls were always finding means to talk to Ayomide. Hilarious!
Immediately it is time, the bell rings, signifying break time. The teacher leaves and I put my book back in my bag, taking my time in the process.
"Are you not going to the cafeteria. This one that you are arranging bag. Don't let me leave you here." Sade says, standing from her seat. I drop my bag and we walk out of the class.
"Do you think I didn't see the way you looked at Ayomide?" Sade says as we walk to the cafeteria, surprising me.
"What do you mean. I wasn't looking at him o. Maybe you made a mistake." I try to lie to her.
"Stop lying jhoor. I saw you. You were looking at him with a dreamy face. Hmmm, after saying you won't be distracted. Hehe. Admit it; he's handsome to the extent that you couldn't take your eyes off him." She grins as we approach a free table after collecting our food.
"That's not why I was looking at him. I was staring because he looked like my childhood friend and I think he is the one." I confess.
"Wait o. You're saying that Ayomide is that boy you were telling me about. The one who left you. WOW, this year will be drama-filled." Sade replies and starts eating her food.
"With all the drama going on in my life, I don't need more problems. God will sha help us all."I say and focus on my food since I didn't eat in the morning.
"Guys, look at the loser, eating like a pig." Toun, my most exceptional bully, insults me, and the whole cafeteria laughs.
"Toun, must you always behave stupid and dumb. I get that you want attention but do you always have to go too far? I understand that mommy and daddy are not giving you enough attention but don't be so stupid." Sade defends me, giving Toun a death glare.
A series of 'oos' and 'ahaas' fills in the cafeteria.
"The girl sef can't talk. She's dumb. It's her servant, our dear Sade that is speaking for her." Tolu, my stepsister, ridicules me.
I look around only to see that every one in the cafeteria in laughing, including Ayomide, which hurts me, so I run out of the cafeteria with Sade behind me.
"Sade, I'm ok. I saw that Ayomide was laughing and I was hurt. I don't even know why I was hurt. Let's forget about it and go to class." I urge Sade, we are in the toilet where I cried because of the humiliation.
"Let's go."She says and we return back to the class.
********
"Make sure to submit your assignment before 9 am tomorrow." Mrs Olanrewaju, our Biology teacher, says as she packs her bag to leave the class. Immediately she leaves, chattering starts, and the class becomes noisy.
"Assistant Captain awfar na." I tease Sade as we walk out of the class.
"You too, Lover girl." She teases me and laughs
"What's up, girls. Can I join in your conversation?" Ayomide joins us for reasons unknown to me.
"We were just talking jare. Trust me. You don't want to know the topic of our conversation." Sade jokes.
"Is there something wrong with your friend?" He asks, facing me. I ignore him, acting as if he isn't here.
"You mean Fikayomi. She's just shy jare." Sade says.
"I'm sorry, but I won't be able to continue this conversation with you guys. My ride is here. Bye, see you tomorrow." I say and walk to the car waiting for my stepsisters.
*******
When we get home, I come down from the car and walk straight to my room. I put off my uniform and change into a casual gown. I bring out my books and start to read according to my reading timetable.
After hours of reading, a voice at the door of my room disturbs my reading session.
"Sade, clean up the kitchen before you sleep o and warm all the stew. Ma je ki obe mi baje o." My stepmother orders me.
(Dont let my stew spoil)
I stand from my bed and walk to the kitchen. After cleaning the kitchen and doing all the other things, I eat the little food that is left and return to my room.
I sleep off thinking about Ayomide and our times together in the past.
