He offered a polite smile, then began examining me, his gloved hands methodical as he checked my vitals. “Mrs. Hernandez,” he began, his voice calm and professional, “your vitals are stabilizing, but you need to rest.” I gave him a tight nod, already feeling stifled by the hospital bed and the IV drip tethering me to this place. “Doctor, can I step outside for some air?
