CHAPTER 21 I stepped outside. Cool air filled my lungs. The tavern door closed behind me with a hollow thud. Street torches provided minimal light, but thin clouds backlit by a glowing moon helped. I heard boots scuff on loose stones, and looked to my left where the sound came from. Two men appeared, sending a layer of evening fog into silent, angry eddies. While using more stealth, peripherally I noticed more movement from the right. There were the other three men. The five of them surrounded me. I stood still for a moment and concentrated on my breathing, kept it calm and balanced. In. Out. I walked. I wasn’t headed anywhere in particular. The two men on the left stepped in front of me.
