CHAPTER 5 Eight Months Later Nights were coldest. Tonight, was no exception. The wind howled as it whipped the falling and loose snow into a swirling frenzy. I pulled up the collars on the two tunics I wore, clothing I’d stolen off laundry lines in the yards of properties I’d snuck across. The barn I’d been watching was unoccupied. By unoccupied I meant, no people were inside it. Although poorly built, I welcomed a barn with gaps between planks, as opposed to the idea of risking freezing to death. I came out from behind the rock where I’d been hiding most of the day. The chickens had taken shelter inside their coop long ago.
