CHAPTER 10 At midday, I left the keep armed with carrots from the produce cart, I circled around to the northern wall of the castle. That was where the stables Copper and I mucked were. I missed the horses. There was something soothing about brushing down the majestic animals. Watching them eat entire apples in a bite or two made me laugh. Matron Sybrina’s orphans still worked the stalls. They knew me pretty well. I came by often enough. We would say hello, chat, and even if I knew the answer, I would ask them how Copper was doing. The kids promised me that everyone looked out for Copper. That made me happy. Sometimes I would pitch in sweeping floors, and sifting hay.
