Chapter 4 Mutated Ants!

1780 Words
Cole glanced coldly at the corpses on the ground and walked over with the watermelon knife in hand. He first dissected the two charred Infected Creatures. Unfortunately, his luck did not seem very good. Neither of them contained any Core Flesh. Cole was not too disappointed. Core Flesh was already extremely rare. Finding one inside ten Infected Creatures was considered lucky enough. He immediately walked over to the struggling Infected Creature, easily sliced through its neck, and cut open the skin on its chest. Black blood flowed everywhere. Suddenly, Cole’s eyes lit up. Beside the creature’s heart was a piece of Core Flesh the size of two fingers, twice as large as the one found in the little girl earlier. He took out the plastic bag from his pocket, covered his hand with it, and grabbed the Core Flesh. He did not eat it immediately because it was stained with the Infected Creature’s blood and carried a strong virus. Casually wrapping the Core Flesh in the plastic bag, Cole walked over to the headless female Infected Creature, tore open her clothes, and sliced open the skin on her chest. He completely ignored the curves of her chest. A moment later, he stood back up. There was no Core Flesh inside her body. Cole did not linger any longer and quickly left the area. The explosion earlier was enough to alert many wandering Infected Creatures downstairs. Not long after he left, several Infected Creatures rushed into the stairwell. Their expressions were savage as they stared at the corpses of their own kind. Sniffing the scent of blood in the air, they slowly climbed upstairs... Cole retreated back to the room where he had previously hunted the Infected Creature, closed the door, and locked it. Then he took out the Core Flesh, washed it clean, and swallowed it whole. After absorbing the energy from the Core Flesh, Cole’s physique became even stronger. His resistance to the virus also increased significantly. His strength rose by dozens of pounds, and even the speed of his blade became faster! Suddenly— Bang! Bang! Bang! The room door shook violently from heavy pounding. Cole frowned, tightened his grip on the watermelon knife, and walked over to look through the peephole. Three figures were outside the door, crazily smashing against it with savage expressions. They were three Infected Creatures. Cole did not panic. Calmly stepping back several paces, he pondered for a moment before quickly coming up with a plan. He entered the living room and pushed several sofas from in front of the television over to the door. Three sofas in total were arranged in a “T” shape behind the entrance. Then he entered the kitchen and found a kitchen knife along with two frying pans. Finally, he also grabbed the mop leaning beside the bathroom door. Once everything was prepared, Cole walked behind the door and unlocked it. Under the pushing force of the three Infected Creatures, the door immediately burst open. However, it only opened a narrow c***k before stopping against the sofas, which themselves were wedged firmly against the wall... Only a tiny gap remained. One Infected Creature clawed wildly, trying to squeeze in. It could only force one arm through sideways, but it still could not reach Cole, who stood only a palm’s length beyond its fingertips. This only drove it crazier. It roared and struggled violently, its eyes filled with bloodlust and savagery. Cole remained expressionless. The moment the creature stretched its arm forward, he raised the watermelon knife and slashed down hard. Instantly, the Infected Creature’s clawed arm was severed with a single strike! Before, with the toughness of an Infected Creature’s body, Cole could at most cut halfway through. But now, he had sliced it clean off! The creature, having lost its arm, became even more frenzied and savage, pushing violently against the door. The sofas behind it creaked with cracking noises, as if they could collapse at any moment. Cole wasted no time. Raising the mop, he used its long reach to attack from outside the creature’s striking distance. The end of the mop slammed heavily into the bridge of the Infected Creature’s nose. The powerful blow made it howl miserably as its head snapped backward. The two Infected Creatures behind it immediately seized the chance and fought to squeeze through the gap. In the end, one of them managed to push past the other and force its way inside. Coldness flashed through Cole’s eyes. Repeating the same method, he first chopped off the creature’s claws before using the mop to strike at its eyes and mouth. Crack! Suddenly, the sofa blocking the door snapped apart. The wood and aluminum frame bent like a shrimp. At the same time, the three Infected Creatures outside burst into the room and lunged toward Cole. Cole was startled. He had not expected the sofa to fail before he finished killing all three creatures. It showed just how terrifying their strength truly was. As one Infected Creature lunged at him, Cole swung the frying pan in his left hand fiercely. Bang! The frying pan smashed into the creature’s head and broke through from the impact, getting stuck around its neck like a collar. Cole tugged hard, causing the creature to lose balance and crash to the floor. The second Infected Creature charged at that moment. Cole sidestepped and swept the mop horizontally, striking its waist. Crack! The mop instantly snapped in half. Cole did not even have time to breathe. The third Infected Creature followed immediately behind. Cole quickly dove to the ground, kicking backward with both feet into the creature’s chest and sending it flying away. He then hurriedly scrambled up and rushed toward the Infected Creature trapped by the frying pan. One kick exploded forward, smashing into its nose and eyes. The creature screamed miserably and was sent flying several feet away. Before Cole could continue his assault, the Infected Creature struck in the waist had already recovered and pounced again. Cole retreated one step. The moment the creature landed from its leap—its old force exhausted while new force had yet to form—Cole suddenly slashed out with lightning speed. The blade sliced clean through its neck. Its head flew into the air while its body struggled briefly before collapsing. Kill! Coldness filled Cole’s eyes as he rushed toward the Infected Creature still wearing the frying pan. One stomp down! Another crushing stomp! Splatter! The creature’s skull was crushed directly beneath Cole’s foot! White brain matter sprayed across the floor like smashed fruit juice. Almost at the same instant, the final Infected Creature lunged from behind Cole. In that split second, there was no time for him to turn around! At the very edge of life and death, although Cole clearly heard the creature’s roar behind him, he did not turn. Instead, he sprinted forward. The creature chased close behind, and in moments, Cole had reached the wall ahead with nowhere left to run! The Infected Creature pounced. But in the next instant, not only did Cole’s speed not slow, it became even faster. His feet kicked off the wall as though he were running across it. He stepped twice against the surface before pushing off violently into a backward flip. The watermelon knife in his hand slashed downward with full force, hacking directly into the creature’s skull! The Infected Creature’s body trembled. Its head split apart before it collapsed to the floor. Everything had happened within an unbelievably short span of time—less than a minute in total. Cole did not dare rest. He immediately went to close the door before dropping heavily onto the broken sofa, gasping for breath. Only after several moments did he recover some stamina. He stood and walked over to the three corpses. Even though their heads had already exploded apart, Cole still had the illusion that the moment he crouched down, they would suddenly leap up and attack him. He sliced open each creature’s chest and dissected them one by one, yet still found no Core Flesh. A trace of disappointment flashed through his eyes. After resting briefly, he left the room again and headed downstairs. As he passed through the corridor, the four dissected Infected Creature corpses still lay there. Black blood stained the floor everywhere, creating a horrifying sight. Cole carefully stepped around the clean areas before dragging the corpses aside to clear a path. If he had to flee from pursuing Infected Creatures later, he did not want these bodies tripping him up. Only after finishing this did he descend another floor. This level was much larger and contained far more rooms. The hotel had many different room types: presidential suites, guest rooms, single rooms, and more. The guest rooms alone numbered thirty-four on this floor! Cole stepped into the corridor. Everything around him was deathly silent. Some room doors were slightly ajar, while others had bloodstains smeared across them. In the middle of the corridor lay a severed head surrounded by blood. Some unlucky victim had probably been torn apart by Infected Creatures. Cole tightened his grip on the watermelon knife, forcing himself not to become too nervous. If his palms sweated too much, his grip would become unstable and the blade might slip free. In his previous life, these Infected Creatures were so weak he would not even bother looking at them. A single slap could kill an entire group. But now, his current body was still too weak. Facing even two or three at once carried deadly risk. At present, his strength was only about half that of an Infected Creature. The long corridor stretched endlessly ahead. On both sides were ten doors. Three of them stood slightly open. With the slightest disturbance, Infected Creatures might rush out from within. Cole cautiously approached. Soon, he arrived beside the first half-open door. A faint cold breeze drifted from inside, making his scalp tingle and every hair on his body stand upright. Holding the watermelon knife tightly, Cole slowly pushed the door open a little wider and peeked in from the side. The room was clean and orderly. Nothing appeared disturbed. Cole secretly relaxed a little. Stepping to the side for a better view, he surveyed the entire room— And instantly froze in shock. The room was empty. But on the floor of the living room crouched a black creature roughly the size of a fist. Its entire body was pitch-black, with a pair of antennae on its head. Its shell-like body glistened darkly. A Mutated Ant Creature! Cole recognized the monster instantly, and both shock and delight surged through his heart.
