Chapter 6 Fighting Together!

Cole froze for a moment, then immediately shook his head.“No. You’re still too weak right now. My strength isn’t enough to guarantee your safety one hundred percent.” Loxi suddenly raised her head and stared straight at Cole, her eyes filled with determination.“I have to go!” Cole smiled bitterly. He understood his younger sister’s stubborn personality very well. He knew there was no point trying to persuade her further. Letting out a soft sigh, he said,“If that’s the case, then once we go out, you must listen to everything I say. Don’t act on your own!” Joy instantly appeared in Loxi’s eyes. She nodded repeatedly and giggled.“I knew you’d agree. Come on, the food’s already ready.” Cole smiled helplessly. After closing the door, he went to the bathroom to wash the bits of flesh and blood off his body before finally walking to the dining table in the living room. Looking at the few homemade dishes on the glass table, he could not help but feel nostalgic. Under Loxi’s expectant gaze, he picked up a slice of potato and ate it. “How does it taste?” Loxi asked nervously. Usually, Cole was always the one cooking at home. This was practically the first time she had ever cooked in her life. Salty! Cole felt as though his entire tongue had gone bitter, like stuffing a whole chunk of salt into his mouth. But seeing the anticipation and excitement on Loxi’s face, he could not bear to ruin her mood. He forced himself to swallow it and smiled. “The potato slices taste pretty good. I didn’t expect you to actually have talent in cooking.” Loxi’s face immediately turned red. Lowering her head, she said softly,“Um… these are actually… shredded potatoes…” Cole was stunned. Loxi’s face flushed bright red. She picked up a piece and put it into her cherry-like lips. “Pfft!” She instantly spat it out and said gloomily,“So salty!” Cole smiled and picked up another piece to eat.“It’s fine. We can still make do with it. Eat the other dishes.” Salty? In the later stages of the apocalypse, having food at all was already fortunate enough. Who would still complain about the taste? Loxi glanced at Cole, then silently picked up the plate of potatoes and said softly,“Stop eating it. Tonight I’ll add some water and boil it into soup.” Cole thought for a moment, then nodded. “Oh right.”Cole suddenly remembered the Core Flesh inside the bag. He quickly took it out and handed it to Loxi. “Eat this. It can increase your strength!” Loxi looked curiously at the black plastic bag. After opening it, she saw a piece of white meat that looked like creamy jade fat. “What is this?” “Core Flesh.” Cole thought for a moment before explaining, “Simply put, it’s a type of powerful meat filled with rich energy.” Loxi let out an “oh,” then immediately handed it back to him.“You should eat it. I haven’t really done anything, so I don’t need much strength. If you become stronger, then you’ll be able to protect me better.” Cole smiled faintly.“I’ve already eaten some. This little bit won’t have much effect on me anymore. But after you consume it, you should gain the strength of an adult man. At the very least, you’ll be able to keep up with me while running.” Loxi thought for a moment and stopped refusing. She slowly placed it into her mouth, chewed it carefully, and swallowed it. A moment later— “My body really feels much lighter.” Loxi stared at herself in shock. She could hardly imagine that such a tiny piece of meat possessed such miraculous effects. “Alright, let’s eat.” Cole smiled slightly and began eating. Afterward… The two simply ate a little before resting. They slept from eleven-thirty until one-thirty. After waking up, Cole began preparing weapons. Hearing movement, Loxi also woke up. She glanced at the four watermelon knives on the cabinet, picked one up, and swung it a few times excitedly. Cole looked at her helplessly. A newborn calf feared no tiger. Once she truly witnessed the brutality and terror of the Infected Creatures, she would no longer be this excited. This time, Cole brought along one gasoline bottle as a lifesaving weapon for emergencies. Why not bring two? The reason was simple. Carrying two on his body would affect his movement speed. Besides, with Cole’s current strength, as long as he did not encounter seven or eight Infected Creatures attacking together, there was basically no danger. After preparing everything, Cole turned to look at Loxi, who was wearing a T-shirt and jeans, and pondered for a moment before saying,“Go change into thicker clothes first. There are camouflage pants inside the cabinet too. I already prepared them.” Loxi blinked and glanced at her outfit. In the end, she obediently went into the bedroom and changed into a combat outfit. She wore a black short-sleeved shirt on top and camouflage casual pants below. She looked extremely stylish. If she added a baseball cap, she would look just like a dancer. “Take this.”Cole tossed her a watermelon knife for self-defense before sternly warning,“Once we go outside, stay close behind me. Don’t relax your guard, and don’t act on your own.” Loxi obediently nodded. Cole still felt somewhat uneasy, but there was no better solution. In the end, he could only sigh helplessly. “Let’s go!” As he spoke, he walked to the door and checked outside first. After confirming there were no Infected Creatures around, he finally opened the door. Loxi followed closely behind him. Click. The door shut behind them. The safe atmosphere around the two instantly vanished. The silent corridor gave off an eerie and terrifying feeling. Cole remained calm. After bringing Loxi around to inspect the surroundings and confirming that no Infected Creatures had climbed up from below, he headed straight toward the stairwell and advanced down another floor. As they passed through the stairwell, Loxi saw the three Infected Creature corpses lying across the stairs. Her pretty face immediately turned deathly pale. She leaned against the wall and started vomiting. Cole looked helpless. Anyone seeing such a bloody scene for the first time would find it unbearable. He walked to her side and gently patted her back to help her recover before saying, “How about you go back first? You can come again next time.” Loxi immediately stopped vomiting. Wiping the corner of her mouth, she snorted and pouted stubbornly.“No way! Hmph! They’re just a few corpses. What’s so scary about that?” As she spoke, she turned her head and glared fiercely at the few Infected Creature corpses on the ground, as though saying, “Hmph, I’m not afraid of you!” But the moment she looked over— The split-open chests of the Infected Creatures… the black blood… “Urgh…” She immediately began vomiting again. Cole smiled bitterly. In this matter, she could only rely on herself. A while later, Loxi finally vomited out everything she had eaten at noon. Her face was pale, but the stubbornness in her eyes grew even stronger. Once she recovered slightly, she looked toward those Infected Creatures again. This time, although her brows were tightly knitted together, she finally managed to hold back without vomiting. “Let’s go!” Loxi steadied herself and urged. Cole inhaled the rotten stench lingering in the air. He had long since become accustomed to this smell. In the later stages of the apocalypse, this odor filled the air everywhere. Immediately, the two continued down the stairs. As they passed beside those Infected Creature corpses, Loxi’s face remained pale, her body trembling slightly, tears almost shining in her eyes. Yet in the end, she still bit her lips and endured it. “I absolutely won’t let you fight alone. Absolutely not!” Looking at her brother’s familiar back, stubborn determination filled Loxi’s eyes. 17th floor corridor. Everything was silent. Cole and Loxi stood at the entrance of the corridor, staring at the long hallway ahead. An oppressive atmosphere filled the air. Cole remained calm as he carefully bypassed the room containing the Mutated Ant Creature and walked toward the third room on the left. The room’s door was locked. Knock knock. “ROAR!” Wild beast-like roars immediately sounded from inside, accompanied by violent pounding against the door. Cole pressed his ear against the door and listened carefully. He quickly determined that there were three Infected Creatures inside pounding against it. Judging from the quality of the door, it could probably hold for around three minutes. After all, three Infected Creatures were equivalent to the strength of nine normal men! Standing behind him, Loxi listened to the frenzied roars and recalled the hideous faces of those Infected Creatures she had seen earlier. Her entire body trembled uncontrollably. Only now did she truly realize what kind of monsters her brother had been fighting all morning. Her small hands tightly gripped the watermelon knife. Because she was too nervous, her palms were soaked with sweat, and both hands trembled slightly. Remembering a calming method taught on television, she silently repeated in her heart: “I’m not scared, I’m not scared…” At that moment, Cole turned and entered the second room. This room had previously been occupied by the eight Infected Creatures, but now not a single one remained. It was absolutely safe. Cole shut the door and used the old method again, pushing the sofas against the entrance while leaving only a narrow c***k in the door, just enough for an Infected Creature to squeeze half its body through. Right after finishing everything, the neighboring room’s door finally shattered. The three Infected Creatures followed the scent of blood and arrived at the room entrance, crazily squeezing and struggling to force their way inside. After smashing through the previous door, these Infected Creatures had already consumed a large amount of stamina and were no longer as fierce as before. Standing nearby, Loxi peered through the c***k in the door and saw one Infected Creature barely squeeze half its head inside. Its eyes burned with bloodlust, fangs exposed, glaring at her viciously as it continuously stretched out its claws trying to grab her. Unfortunately, the distance was too far. No matter how hard it struggled, it could not reach her. Her pretty face turned deathly pale, and her body trembled nonstop. Slash! Standing beside her, Cole remained expressionless. With a single swing, he chopped off the Infected Creature’s claw. While it howled in pain, he suddenly flashed toward the door. The watermelon knife in his hand stabbed fiercely into the creature’s forehead. Unfortunately, the tip of the watermelon knife was as blunt as the back of the blade, so it failed to pierce through the creature’s skull. Even so, the tremendous force knocked the Infected Creature backward. Seeing the opportunity, the other two Infected Creatures immediately fought to squeeze through. Cole casually chopped off their claws as well. Then he widened the gap in the door slightly. One Infected Creature immediately struggled its way inside, but Cole had already been waiting nearby. With one s***h, he hacked directly into its skull. The Infected Creature collapsed and died instantly. The other two Infected Creatures soon met the same fate. After shutting the door again, Cole looked calmly at the three armless Infected Creature corpses on the floor, along with the scattered severed arms. He walked to one of the corpses, crouched down, and began dissecting its chest. “What are you doing?” Loxi’s face was pale. Her hands holding the knife trembled nonstop. Anyone witnessing such a scene resembling hell on earth would feel horrified. Cole smiled slightly.“The Core Flesh you ate earlier all came from inside these Infected Creatures’ chests, so I need to find it.” Loxi’s entire body shivered violently. Watching someone calmly dissect a corpse and rummage through organs like the heart while still smiling made her scalp go numb and goosebumps rise all over her body. But once she heard that the Core Flesh she ate at noon had actually been taken from inside an Infected Creature’s body, she nearly fainted on the spot. Supporting herself against the wall beside her, she started dry heaving violently once again.
