Chapter 12: Dinner Party Disaster (and the Accidental Chef)

693 Words
Carter's POV After the spa day shenanigans, I decided to try something a bit more… refined. A sophisticated dinner party! I envisioned a night of elegant conversation, delicious food, and maybe even some classical music. I wanted to show Mya that I could be more than just a purveyor of chaos. I transformed the mansion's formal dining room into a romantic bistro. I set the table with fine china, lit candles, and even found a record of classical piano music. I decided to cook a gourmet meal myself, thinking it would be a grand gesture. I consulted a cookbook (briefly) and decided on a menu: spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce, garlic bread, and a chocolate lava cake for dessert. What could possibly go wrong? Mya arrived, looking stunning in a simple dress. "A dinner party?" she asked, her eyes widening. "You cooked?" "A culinary masterpiece awaits," I declared, gesturing to the dining room. She chuckled, shaking her head. "Only you, Carter." I started with the spaghetti sauce. I chopped onions, garlic, and tomatoes, adding a generous amount of herbs and spices. I even added a secret ingredient – a dash of hot sauce, just to give it a kick. The sauce simmered on the stove, filling the kitchen with a fragrant aroma. I moved on to the garlic bread, spreading butter and garlic on slices of baguette. Just as I was about to put the garlic bread in the oven, I heard a loud popping noise coming from the stove. The spaghetti sauce was bubbling furiously, splattering red sauce all over the kitchen. "Uh oh," I said, realizing my mistake. I had turned the heat up too high. I quickly turned off the stove, but the damage was done. The kitchen was a mess, covered in splattered tomato sauce. Mya, bless her, didn't panic. She grabbed a towel and started helping me clean up the mess. "Maybe we should order pizza?" she suggested, grinning. "Nonsense!" I declared. "The show must go on!" We salvaged what we could of the spaghetti sauce, adding more tomatoes and herbs to cover up the burnt taste. I put the garlic bread in the oven, hoping it wouldn't burn. While the garlic bread was baking, I started on the chocolate lava cake. I mixed the ingredients, poured the batter into ramekins, and put them in the oven. Just as the garlic bread was done, I smelled something burning. The lava cakes! I had forgotten to set a timer. I quickly pulled the ramekins out of the oven, but the cakes were burnt around the edges. "Well," I said, trying to sound optimistic, "they're… crispy." We sat down at the table, our plates filled with slightly burnt spaghetti, slightly burnt garlic bread, and slightly burnt lava cake. Mya took a bite of the spaghetti, her eyes widening. "This is actually… good," she said, surprised. "Really?" I asked, taking a bite myself. "I thought it tasted a bit… smoky." "It has a certain… rustic charm," she replied, grinning. We ate our dinner, laughing and talking about our cooking mishaps. Even though the food wasn't perfect, the company was. As we finished our meal, I decided to try something a bit more… unconventional. I grabbed a bottle of chocolate syrup and started drawing on our plates, creating abstract designs and funny faces. Mya joined in, and soon our plates were covered in chocolate art. We even drew a portrait of Polly the parrot, who was watching us from her perch. As Mya left, she gave me a warm hug. "Thanks for the… interesting dinner party, Carter," she said. "I had a lot of fun." "Me too," I replied, grinning. "But next time, maybe we'll try… takeout." As I closed the door, I couldn't help but smile. Even though our dinner party had been a culinary disaster, it had been a fun and memorable one. And I had a feeling that Mya wouldn't have had it any other way. Plus, I bet the rubber chicken council would have been impressed with the sheer volume of splattered tomato sauce. They do appreciate a dramatic food fight, especially one that involves a homemade sauce.
