Chapter 10: A vampire in town?

1819 Words
When it was time to finally go out for dinner with mom and Markus, I was sat silently for most of the meal. I couldn’t stop thinking about Mason. At first, it had been how annoying I found him, or at least how annoying I convinced myself I found him, I told myself I was still mad at him about the whole avoiding me because Marcus had decided to have that quiet talk with Mason about my delicate mental state (insert eye roll here) but somehow my thoughts had shifted to how gorgeous and quite beautiful Mason was for such an alpha male. His perfect and incredible blue electric eyes with flecks of gold that still fascinated me, even for a werewolf that was unheard of. We only had our human eye color in human form, yet somehow Markus had a mix of both his human and werewolf eye colors blended together. It wasn’t long before I was then seeing in my mind his perfect muscular body, easily detected thanks to the muscle tight fit t-shirts and long sleeved shirts he wore that clung to his body perfectly. Pfft, who was I kidding he could have wore loose clothes and still wouldn’t be able to hide that powerful frame. “Oi, Hazel.” I jumped at the sound of my name being called and looked at Markus. “Huh?” He shook his head at me and then gestured towards the waitress waiting for me to give my order. I sat up straight and tried to compose myself as I ordered my usual favorite foods, a burger, chips, and a milkshake. I would get the dessert after I’d finished eating. I already knew(thanks to the slight drool that had started sliding down my chin when I had been thinking of Mason) that I was seriously hot for him, and I couldn’t ignore it any longer. I was still so busy thinking about him by the time we had paid the bill that I didn’t see the slight lip on the floor as we walked through the restaurant door and I tripped and fell into the back of mom, automatically I reached out and grabbed a hold of her bag in reflex so that I fell to my knees instead of on my face. Mom jerked and almost fell down with me, but she managed to keep herself standing. I pulled myself back to my feet and looked over to what had Markus’ attention, so much so that he missed the opportunity to mock me as he so loved to do. There was a load of police cars, vans, and an ambulance. A crowd had started to gather so that I could barely see the young woman lying motionless on the floor of the alleyway across the street. It looked like she had tried to run and almost made it to the safety of the streets before someone had killed her. With our wolf senses, we could already smell death and didn’t need to be up close as a human would to see two small puncture wounds on her wrist. There was no blood at the scene, which confirmed we were dealing with a vampire. My eyes widened as I focused more on my sense of smell and realized she smelt like wolf. A werewolf. Thankfully, humans wouldn’t notice anything unusual, upon death, the werewolf gene seemed to disappear along with the golden hue that ran through female wolves veins. We were not the only supernatural creatures among humans. Vampires existed among other creatures. They rarely killed and left their victims for all the world to see, though, for none of us wanted the attention of humans in our direction. It was unheard of for a vampire to feed on a werewolf, let alone kill their victim. Markus rushed us home and called the rest of the pack into the living room for a meeting. When Mason walked into the room, my heart raced faster and when he looked up at me, I blushed and looked away. It was like now I had accepted how I felt about him, I could no longer control my stupid body and how it reacted to him. I focused on what Markus was saying to distract myself. “We’ve just witnessed a crime barely a mile away from our home. A woman killed by a vampire.” Everyone grew silent, surprised that a vamp would be so reckless, and then there were a few actual gasps of shock when he added, “she was a werewolf.” The only person who looked unfazed was Mason. Markus was many things, but unobservant he was not. He noticed Mason and asked, “you don’t look surprised, Mason?” Mason stood up from where he had been leaning against the wall with his arms folded and answered, “In my old pack, something similar happened. A female werewolf had been drained of blood. When a second female werewolf turned up dead drained of blood as well, I knew there was a pattern.” He had been ready to stop talking, but the look Markus was giving him and the pack staring wide-eyed at him he carried on. “Uh, I looked into it and found from the puncture wounds that it wasn’t the same vampire every time. I had a theory that it could be a whole clan that had, for whatever reason, gotten the taste for werewolf blood, but I didn’t get to investigate further due to my old alpha not allowing it.” Markus looked surprised at this and asked, “why wouldn’t he allow it?” Mason shrugged and answered, “He wasn’t a fighter, he preferred we kept ourselves to ourselves, which is why I opted to leave the pack in the end.” The meeting ended with Markus asking that Mason and Lydia look more into these recent deaths and to report back when they knew more. I was tired by the time I went to bed and crashed until morning. As usual, I went to bomb it down the stairs, remembered I wanted to appear more my actual age and decided to choose some clothes to wear instead. I picked dark blue skinny jeans and a bright red top that had a knot in the front so my stomach showed. I really hated my stomach showing even though it was lean and toned now thanks to my wolf gene, but I suppose i would forever have that self-conscious mind set from when I was younger. I forced the top on anyway, along with the jeans, some ankle socks and added a silver ankle bracelet mom had gotten me. I added a silver bracelet with a small wolf pendant on my wrist and hoop earrings. It felt so weird wearing jewelry and the wolf in me had to ignore the urge to shake it all off. I had watched a load of YouTube tutorials while I’d been waiting for the meal yesterday, and I tried my best to copy what mom had done along with the tips the videos had shown. When I looked in the mirror I looked pretty much exactly how mom had done my makeup yesterday, ha, who would have thought I’d actually be good at it. The lipstick was still red, but I’d made it darker by adding black lip liner underneath, so it was more of a bloodred colour. I did the cat eye with the liner and my eyeshadow was a very soft rose gold glittery colour. I was liking this makeup palette mom had gotten me and was even happier I was pretty damn good at doing makeup when I made the effort. However, I was not happy with how long it took me, two hours, yes, two freaking hours so that my stomach was rumbling crazily with hunger by the time I was done, and it was now eight in the morning, I was usually up and eating by six! I went to leave my room and remembered my hair. It still looked great from whatever stuff mom had used on it, so all I had to do was play around a little with it. I had left it down yesterday so today I decided to put it into a half up and down hair do using small clips. When I looked in the mirror I noticed that the hairstyle along with the makeup gave me a real exotic look, I loved the look and finally left my room to go find food. Samara had clearly already finished her food, as she wasn’t at the table, but Mason was. I blushed crimson when I saw him and was so happy for my dark skin in that moment. I helped myself to my usual cereal and understood by now why mom had insisted on using lipstick that didn’t smudge or move when eating or drinking, and I was so freaking thankful right now for that as I had to eat with Mason in the room, the last thing I needed was looking like a clown in front of him after I was done. I sat down at the table, and he looked up at me, noticing me for the first time. He didn’t say anything at first and just stared. I blushed even harder under his gaze, and it took every ounce of me not to run out of the room from embarrassment. Finally, he mumbled, “good morning.” “Morning,” I mumbled back and started eating. He looked at me with a slight frown on his face and then asked, “are you ok?” I only nodded in response, but this made him frown harder. “What?” I finally asked. “You usually don’t shut up talking, what’s going on with you?” I fought against the burning in my cheeks as I answered, “nothing, honest. Why, do you want to be friends again or something?” “Yeah, actually, I would.” I looked up at that, and it was my turn to frown. “Why? The other day, you couldn’t wait to get away from me after Markus spoke with you.” He didn’t show what he was thinking but answered, “I know, I realize that was a shitty thing to do to you, especially after you helped me the other night. I’m sorry.” I gave him a suspicious look and asked, “so you want to ignore what daddy said now?” I said it sarcastically, but Mason looked flustered when I said the word daddy before composing himself and mock whispering, “well he never said anything about us being just friends.” He winked when he said it, and I blushed even harder and looked away from his eyes. I had a feeling this was going to be harder than I thought.
