The Ruthless Alpha

815 Words
The forest had never been this quiet. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Elena stood frozen where she was, her heart pounding wildly against her ribs as the tall stranger stepped fully into the moonlight. The rogues immediately lowered their heads. Fear rolled off them like a heavy scent. Elena’s gaze slowly lifted to the man who had appeared from the darkness. He was tall. Much taller than any wolf she had seen before. His broad shoulders were wrapped in a long black coat, and his presence alone seemed to fill the entire clearing with quiet authority. But it was his eyes that caught her attention. Sharp. Silver. Cold enough to freeze the blood of anyone who dared challenge him. Those eyes were fixed on her. Studying her. Measuring her. One of the rogues spoke nervously. “ Alpha Rowan… we didn’t know she belonged to you. Rowan. The name hit Elena like a sudden memory. Alpha Rowan Nightshade. Leader of the Shadow Fang Pack. The most feared Alpha in the northern territories. Stories about him had spread through every pack for years. A ruthless warrior. A merciless leader. A wolf who crushed enemies without hesitation. Elena’s stomach twisted. Of all the places she could have wandered into… She had entered his territory. Rowan didn’t look away from her. Not even for a second. His voice was low when he finally spoke. “Did I give you permission to hunt in my forest?” The rogues shifted uneasily. “No, Alpha. Rowan took a slow step forward. The ground seemed to tremble beneath the weight of his authority. “And yet,” he continued calmly, “you were about to spill blood here.” His gaze finally shifted toward the rogues. The temperature in the clearing dropped instantly. Explain. The largest rogue swallowed hard. We thought she was alone,” he muttered. Rowan’s expression didn’t change. But she isn’t. The simple statement carried a deadly warning. The rogues understood immediately. They bowed their heads lower. “Our mistake, Alpha. For a moment, Rowan simply stared at them. Then he spoke again. Leave. The command was quiet. But absolute. The rogues didn’t hesitate. Within seconds they turned and disappeared into the darkness of the forest, running like frightened animals. Silence returned to the clearing. Now only Elena and Rowan remained. The moment felt strangely heavy. Elena suddenly became aware of how weak she was. Her legs trembled slightly as the last of her strength drained away. Rowan’s attention returned to her. His silver eyes moved slowly over her face, her trembling posture, the tear stains on her cheeks. Then he stepped closer. Elena’s breath caught. His presence was overwhelming. Power radiated from him in waves. Her wolf stirred weakly again. Something about him made her instincts react. But Rowan suddenly stopped walking. His brows lowered slightly. His nostrils flared as he inhaled the air again. The scent was stronger now. Clearer. Impossible to mistake. Mate. His wolf roared inside his chest. Rowan’s jaw tightened. Impossible. He had never believed fate would give him a mate. Not after everything he had seen. Not after everything he had lost. Yet the scent coming from the fragile woman standing before him said otherwise. But something was wrong. Very wrong. He could also smell something else on her. Rejection. Rowan’s eyes darkened slightly. He stepped even closer now, his sharp gaze never leaving her face. “Who rejected you? The question caught Elena off guard. Her chest tightened painfully. The memory of the ceremony hall flashed through her mind. Damien’s cold voice. The moment the bond shattered. Her throat burned. “That’s… none of your business, she said weakly. Rowan studied her for a moment. Most wolves would have trembled under his stare. Yet despite her obvious exhaustion and fear, Elena still managed to answer him. Interesting. Before he could speak again, Elena suddenly swayed. Her vision blurred. The exhaustion, the rejection pain, and the drug still lingering in her system were finally too much. Rowan moved instantly. His arm shot forward, catching her before she collapsed onto the ground. Elena gasped softly as she fell against his chest. His body was warm. Solid. Strong. For a brief moment, her wolf relaxed slightly, comforted by the powerful Alpha scent surrounding him. Rowan looked down at her unconscious form. His expression grew darker. A rejected mate wandering alone into rogue territory. Weak. Broken. And yet carrying the scent that made his wolf restless. He didn’t like unanswered questions. Rowan lifted Elena easily into his arms. Then he turned toward the deeper part of the forest. His pack territory. The place no outsider ever entered. But as he carried the mysterious woman through the trees, one thought echoed inside his mind. If fate truly believed she was meant to be his mate… Then fate had a lot of explaining to do.
