It had been a week since I left Cara’s place and came home. My mom was so happy, I thought she was throwing a feast.
“What is all this?” I asked, leaning against the kitchen counter in our small family flat.
When she told me she had moved to a better neighborhood, I didn’t complain. I just let her do what she wanted and smiled at every word. I knew she was going through a lot.
My mom might pretend she doesn’t love my dad anymore, but I knew better.

“I made your favorite,” she announced, taking the roasted chicken out of the oven.
