The drive back to Cara's place was quiet, my eyes glued to my phone as I stared at the text from my mom, asking when I would be back home.
If she needed to pick me up, I forced a smile while reading her message. I did miss her, but I still hadn't managed to check in on my dad to see how he was doing.
“Are you okay?” Ash's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I shifted my gaze from my phone to him, catching him glancing at me briefly before returning his focus to the road.
“Yeah, I'm fine. What made you think I wasn't?” I replied, trying to sound casual as I tucked some strands of hair behind my ear.
“You look worried. Is it a text from Cara? She was looking for you this morning, you know.” His grip on the steering wheel tightened, and I noticed the tension in his jaw.
