Ginger fields. POV.
“You know I called it! Congratulations love.” I said hugging Lucille immediately after we were out of the conference room.
“Thank you, Ging.”
Lucille had gotten the job; just like I had said! Interviewing all 6 of us took them less than an hour, the interviews had been short and straight to the point.
After the interviews, we all gathered in the conference room again where we were told by Mr. Dupont, head of operations of “Texture” that Lucille got the Job and we were given a short lecture on moving forward and working in the fashion industry.
“Lucille Guy?” Mr. Dupont called out, “Please we would like you to meet us in the studio in a few minutes. Congratulations again.”
“thank you, Mr. Dupont. I’m right behind you.” Then Lucille turns to me. “would you wait till I’m out?”
“Nah, just go on. I’ll call you or you just call me when you get home.” I said waving her off.
“Okay, see you later. Byeeee.” She said with a knowing look as she waved back and followed Mr. Dupont to the studio.
Humming a tv advert I have been unable to get out of my head, I walk towards the elevator looking into my phone as I read my notifications and after walking into the elevator I am joined by some other people.
Casually looking up I turn to my left side to see who my elevator buddies are, I almost scream in shock when I see none other than Mr. Hot CEO right beside me with his bodyguard standing behind him.
I wished I could leave the elevator but it was closed now, I was in close proximity with the man I was avoiding and I just wanted to melt. I just kept my face straight and tried to act uninterested and cold, like I did not want to be disturbed but even that did not deter him.
“Fancy meeting you here this morning.” He said sounding amused.
I did not reply, I kept looking forward and praying for the elevator to stop so I could step out.
He chuckled and said,
“Getting a lady to talk to me has never been this hard.”
I turned to look at him briefly, giving him an unfriendly look before turning away,
He was quite tall with strawberry blonde hair cut in a short mullet style and he was dressed in a sleeveless white t-shirt which exposed his vine and thorns arm tattoo and a pair of ripped denim pants, he looked really good.
But I kept looking away from him, I was not interested.
He did not seem to get the hint because he still spoke to me,
“Do you work here?”
“No, I don’t and I make it a habit to not have conversations with men I don’t know.”
“But you know me,” he said and I knew what he meant by that, I could feel the blood creeping up my cheeks.
The elevator doors opened at that time, ending our very short conversation.
Thank goodness I thought, he was making me a nervous and I just wanted to punch the smirk off his face.
I let out a sigh of relief and immediately walked out of the elevator ahead of him when in a tone so low that at a point I thought what I heard was all in my head, he said;
“I will see you again. Soon.”
but when I briefly turned to read his face, I saw a cocky smile on his face and that look told me he said that s**t, I wondered if his security guard had heard him too. It made me flustered, I was sure my cheeks were red.
I was in such a hurry I did not check for or say goodbye to Marcie and Mr. Holt, getting out I hailed a taxi, got into it, and went straight home.
Getting home, I warmed some leftover pasta in the microwave, ate, showered, and then called my mum.
“Hey, angel.”
“Hey, mama. How are you doing?”
“I am doing great my baby, just had brunch” there was a pause then, “How about you baby? how was the interview?”
“It was okay, not bad but I didn’t get it, mum, Lucille did though.”
“So sorry angel, how do you feel about that?”
“I am very excited for her, she deserves it. I want to stay here for a little bit and see what’s next for me then when I am sure of it, I am coming home for a mini-vacation.”
“that is a very beautiful line of thought Ginger, look at you making grown girl decisions. I am very proud of you and the steps you are taking. I miss you so much and I can’t wait to see you.”
“Thank you, mama,” I said tearing up a little. “I miss you more and how is New Oaktown?”
“it’s okay, just the usual. How is your city? I hope you are taking good care of yourself, make sure you stay safe, okay?”
“it’s great, you know I live for the energy of this city. I am and I will, mama. You should take care of yourself too, I love you.”
“I love you too, my baby.”
Ending the call and falling unto the bed I think of my conversation with my mum and my day in general, I was done with my internship and I had to figure out what was next for me but not yet, I was going to take my time, maybe give myself a month or two? and see.
Thoughts of my encounter with Mr. Hot CEO came to my mind and I thought of the last thing he had said.
“I will see you again. Soon.”
Urgh. That voice though.
******
The sound of my phone ringing pulled me out of my light sleep, I was a little confused as I picked up the call.
“Hullo,” I mumbled.
“Marcie told me she saw you and you looked flushed, she said she had wanted to say hi but you were walking out of the complex so fast she didn’t even think you saw her. are you okay?”
I yawned for a few seconds then said “you woke me from my sweet slumber so no, I’m not okay.”
“Please stop this talk and tell me what happened, I was so worried. I mean, I am still worried…” then she paused. “…does it have to do with the interview and me getting the job?” she continued in a low tone.
“Come on, no it has nothing to do with the interview and you getting the job. You know I have been rooting for you.” Still lying in bed, I yawned a bit and continued. “I was in the same elevator with Mr. Hot CEO.” And then I waited.
“You were where?!” I could hear the excitement in Lucille’s voice. “You know you still have to tell me about what happened on Saturday night, Ging. Now this happened?! You have to tell me everything.”
“You know I can’t tell you over the phone, Lu. Come to my place, I’ll tell you,” I said as I sat up on my bed. I heard scraping and moving sounds on the phone and I knew that Lucille was already on the move.
“On my way!” she replied and ended the call.
Chuckling a bit, I fell back on my bed, yawned a few more times, and then I checked my bedside clock for the time, it was some minutes past 2’oclock. I had slept for more than two hours, that is surprising I thought as I got out of bed and lazily stretched myself/walked to my balcony where I sat on one of the lounge chairs under the umbrella tree.
I really like my apartment, it was my mother’s graduation gift to me.
After what had happened at my prom, I was a mostly bad company and my mother had given me time to wallow in regret, sadness, and self-pity then one day when I believe she felt it was enough, she came to my room and said;
“Alright, times up.”
“what do you mean?” I mumbled from under my blanket
“enough of all this. How about a vacation? My colleague wants to sell an apartment to me, it’s in sun city. We could go check it out for a weekend? A week? then if we like it we get it. C’mon, we both need it, Ging.”
She sighed saying, “I know I haven’t been acting right these past few weeks, my mum’s death took a heavy toll on me and I just did not want to face the fact that I won’t see her again.”
When I still didn’t say anything, she sat down on my bed and continued, “I miss her a lot but I just needed to accept the reality of things and move forward from there, plus I know she would be really mad at me if she saw how I acted. My strong baby, you remind me of her so much.”
Then she pulled the blanket off me, pulled me to her, and gave me the tightest hug.
“So? Vacation?”
“Yes mum, yes,” I said as I hugged her tighter, it was the first time we would be traveling together since my nana’s death. My mother had brushed aside her emotions since Nana’s death, she didn’t talk about it, she just got herself so busy with work and every other thing, purposely ignoring how she was feeling.
Whenever I mentioned Nana she always kept quiet, I knew she was hurting but I never saw her grieve so hearing her say this after she said this I looked at her and saw the pain in her eyes. I sat up on my bed and hugged her very tight, I knew she needed it and heavens know so did I.
After three days we traveled to Sun city. I paid attention to the environment on the way to where we were going to be staying from the airport, it felt very lively and I liked it.
Then I saw the cute apartment my mother wanted to buy, where we would be staying and I think from that moment I fell in love with that apartment and maybe Sun city.
