I could not understand the situation right now but somehow I also don’t want to understand. The woman with a bright red hair like mine is rapidly pressing the close button of the elevator door but I somehow don’t really want to understand what is going on. However, before I could just ignore her, a hand stopped the doors before it could close. The doors opened once again and another human appeared, a furious but pretty man. The woman moved back but the man quickly grabbed her hand and stared at her like he’s going to eat her. I watched and saw that despite her brimming tears, the woman is standing her ground. I don’t really want to be involved but I’m trapped inside since they are blocking the way. I inched away towards the furthest corner of the elevator and hope that they’re too preoccupied to notice me.
"Listen you b***h. If you think your brothers can fire me, well they can't. Everyone is tense about the next successor and my father and I own quit a big share, your brothers won't be stupid enough to offend me if they want me to take any of their side. That's why I will not let you go unscathed after what you did to my baby.” The man said when he opened his mouth and I could see his grip tighten around her wrist as he forcedly pulled her closer.
"Your baby? I can't believe you're even defending that s**t! You could have just broken up with me if she's the one you want. Why? Is it fun being a f*** boy?”
The next thing I heard is a slamming sound echoing through the small space. I felt my mood start to plummet quickly and my face darkened. I hate it. Abusive people have a special place in my list of things I hate in this world.
“s**t?! You dare call-“
I could not let the man continue any further. I grabbed him by the neck before he could touch the woman again then gave him a taste of his own medicine, I threw him to the other side of the wall. I took into consideration the physics of the throw and made sure that he won’t avoid hitting his head. I really didn’t want to get involved but I also cannot leave the woman alone especially when she seems to be the victim here. I am not that knowledgeable with how romance works but I do think that defending the mistress is not really how relationships work.
“What a disgusting human you are.”
The woman’s nerve finally gave away and I felt her body start to shake behind me at the same time that the man recovered and was standing up furiously. Almost on instinct, I pulled the woman closer to me but I can’t help feeling uncomfortable with the contact.
“You b***h! Who do you think you are?!” He started to shout.
I looked at him coldly and he backed down. It seems he knows how to be a coward, good for him. At least he has a strong survival instinct, he just have to use it with his brain.
“Once I find out who you are, you’re screwed.” The man said as he gave us his best glare before storming off.
The doors finally closed with no one blocking it. When the atmosphere finally got quiet, I became very aware of the woman in my arms. I couldn’t let go of her since it would be rude but I do realize that the worst could have happened if I wasn’t here. I guess it’s this human’s lucky day. A moment later, the woman started crying. I pushed the stop button of the elevator in consideration of her state.
“Do you want me to take you somewhere? We can’t stay here.” I finally said when I realized that we had stayed in the elevator long enough.
The woman finally straightened up when she heard me.
“No, thank you. I just need to get to my car.” She said between sniffles. “Thank you so much for your help.”
“Maybe I should call someone for you. Emotional people shouldn’t be driving.”
I’ve already helped her so why not do it the whole way. Besides, if something happens to this woman afterwards like getting in a car accident, I would feel very responsible. It seems like she’s a smart woman and she saw my point.
“My brother is here. But my phone…I threw my phone at them and it broke. It’s embarrassing to ask but can I use your phone?”
I handed her my phone immediately and we decided to go up to the rooftop garden. She made the call while I spotted the bamboo chairs and went over. The sunlight is just right and the wind is blowing around softly. I sat down and adjusted for a comfortable position before I basked in the sun. If I were not here, I would have already fallen asleep.
“My brother is on his way. He’s coming back from a lunch meeting.” The woman said when she came back. She handed me my phone back before sitting down on a nearby chair as well. “By the way, my name is Kylie.”
“Zyla.”
“Are you an employee here?”
“Sort of.” I replied.
“I’ll explain the situation to my brother so Gary won’t touch you. Don’t worry about his threat.”
“It’s okay. The company values me, he can’t do anything to me.”
Kylie smiled and we stayed silent for a moment before she suddenly spoke up again.
"We dated for a year. I didn't see him as that type of a person like he was earlier. It was the first time he showed that side of him or maybe I was just too blinded to see the signs. I just don't understand why that s**t of a secretary would choose him instead of someone else, she clearly knows that we're together. How exactly did she seduce him to make him do that to me?”
"Don't put all the blame on her."
"You're on her side?!"
"No. I just feel your logic is wrong." When Kylie didn't say a word, I continued. "The mistress is just the evil seducer and the man is the sole decision maker if he wants to be seduced or not. If that man really loved you, he would not even spare her a glance but he did."
"Proving it was just a petty love and I was just stupid." Kylie concluded out loud.
"Yes." I said and Kylie laughed.
"You don't play with words much do you? You're really direct with your reply."
"Well if she didn't tell you that, I would have.” A man’s voice interrupted.
I noticed the scent earlier and I thought he was just around the garden somewhere but if I paid much attention to the woman, I would have known that he would appear. Kylie, this woman is Kylie Garret, the stepsister of my mate.
“I’m sorry, I had to bother you.” Kylie said as she stood up but I did not move. To be exact, I really don’t know what to do.
“Are you all right?” William asked Kylie.
“Yeah, I’m okay now. Thanks to her.” Kylie said as they both looked at me.
“Okay. I’ll take you home. Go wait in the car. I’ll just have a little chat with your superhero.” William said to Kylie and Kylie smiled at me before saying goodbye.
We both watched Kylie walk away and then it got very quiet. I finally had the mind to stand up. Maybe I should confront him now? Seduce him?
“I should probably go.” Was what came out of my mouth instead. He smiled at me and I found myself staring at him. “I see. You are attractive.”
“I’m sorry?” He asked but I can tell that he is amused.
I started feeling it as well. That electrifying attraction that could only be the work of that mysterious attraction that this mate thing does. I am a scientist but I am also a werewolf. I have long been able to accept the fact that there are things in this world that cannot be explained but this is something very new to me and it’s scary.
“I have to go.” I said once again and tried to pass by him but I was stopped by his hand when he suddenly grabbed it to stop me. The touch created sparks, invisible ones at least.
“Sorry. I haven’t thank you yet.” He said as he slowly let go of my hand. The spark disappeared and I found myself feeling…disappointed.
“It’s fine.” I said as I took one step back.
“Well then, do you want anything? In exchange for helping my sister, everyone would feel better if I at least return the favor.”
I looked at him. I feel like he’s not going to let me go if I don’t do as he says.
“Um…I’ll let you know if I think of something. I just..need to go now.” I said as I walked backwards then walking away.
I’m not ready for this.
=WILLIAM=
I watched Zyla flee and I just couldn’t help laughing out loud. While this pretense is still up, it doesn’t mean that I can’t tease her.
“What took you so long?” Kylie asked when I got to the car.
“I had to grab something.” I said and Kylie stared at me. “What?”
“Do you know her?” She asked with a grin.
“Who?”
“Oh, don’t pretend. You know Zyla don’t you and you like her.”
“And why exactly do I like her?” I started the car but I couldn’t help being amused at how observant my little sister is.
“I saw how you looked at her. You weren’t even looking at me when you came, your eyes were on her and it was like the way you used to look at Coco when we were young.”
An image of our childhood pet dog came to mind and somehow I found the thought funny since Zyla is a werewolf. Wolves and dogs are not that far off from each other.
“And how exactly did I look at Coco?”
“Love. It was the very first present you got from our parents that’s why you cherished her until the day she breathed her last breath. Remember that time when I fed her chocolates and you got mad at me? I got jealous and shouted that you love the dog more than you love me.”
We both chuckled at the memory.
“You don’t have to change the subject Kylie. I won’t ask, you can tell me when you’re ready or you can also choose never to tell me. I will not meddle in your life and decisions. Sure, my job is to protect you but I won’t make that as a reason to suffocate you or control your decisions in life. You are already an adult.” I finally said to Kylie.
“I know. I just don’t want to talk about him anymore. It’s crazy but I just want to forget about him as soon as possible. I’m hoping that when I wake up tomorrow, he’ll be gone from my thoughts and my heart but I know that it’s not going to be that easy.”
“It’s not. I hate saying this but you loved that bastard too much.”
“I know and I just can’t help but be overwhelmed of how much I regret this love. I just wish that I could turn back time and just…just never met him at all or maybe if I could have just seen the sign or prevented myself from being blinded with love. I just…oh god.”
Kylie cradled her head on her hands and started sobbing. All I could do was put my hand on her shoulder since I was driving but I didn’t need to physically comfort her anymore since she pulled herself together and tried her best to stop crying.
“I don’t want to shed tears for that bastard anymore.” Kylie said as she sniffled then she smiled at me. “But I wasn’t trying to change the subject. You have a thing for her.”
“Maybe…”
I said as I smiled but my thoughts were not at all that sunny. That Gary is going to pay.
