Laura O’Connell stared at the paper in her hands like it might change if she looked long enough . It didn’t Two lines . Clear . Permanent . Unforgiving . Her fingers tightened around the edge of the report until it bent slightly . She did not fix it . She did not breathe properly either . The small hospital office felt too quiet, too white, too clean for the kind of reality sitting in her lap . Pregnant . The word sat heavy in her chest . Not fear alone . Not shock alone . Something deeper . Something that felt like her entire life had shifted direction without asking her permission . She had always been careful . Always calculated . Life had taught her early that mistakes cost more when you had no one to fall back on . And yet . One night . One single night had undone all of it . Her mind drifted back whether she wanted it to or not . The music . The lights . The sharp smell of expensive perfume mixed with alcohol . The kind of place she did not belong but had to be in for work . And him . Damian Castle . Even then, she had not known his name . Only the way he looked at people like they were distractions . Like nothing around him held meaning . She remembered the moment clearly . The wine spilling . The tension . The argument that should have ended everything before it began . But it didn’t . Something shifted . Something reckless . Something she did not recognize in herself . And now this . Her hand moved slowly, almost unconsciously, to her stomach . It felt the same . Nothing had changed physically . No sign of the life growing inside her . But everything had changed . She closed her eyes briefly . Think . Running would be easier . Disappearing would be easier . No one knew . No one had to know . But that thought lasted only seconds before reality replaced it . This was not just her anymore . And the father… Her eyes opened again, sharper this time . Damian Castle . She had searched his name after that night . At first out of curiosity . Then out of disbelief . A billionaire . Not just rich . Powerful . Untouchable . The kind of man who did not deal with problems . He erased them . Her grip tightened again . This could go badly in ways she could not control . Still… He deserved to know . Or maybe she just needed him to know so she could decide what to do next . Either way, she had already made the call . She looked toward the door just as it opened . The air in the room changed instantly . He walked in like he owned more than the building . Like the world adjusted around him without effort . Dark suit . Perfectly fitted . Expression unreadable . Damian Castle did not look surprised to see her . That unsettled her more than anything . His eyes moved once over her, quick, assessing . Then to the paper in her hand . “You said it was urgent .” His voice was calm . Flat . Controlled . Laura stood slowly . Her legs felt steady, which surprised her . “This is .” She held the paper out . He did not take it immediately . His gaze stayed on her face a moment longer, like he was trying to place something he already suspected . Then he took it . Silence filled the room as he read . No reaction . Not even a flicker . That bothered her more . She watched him carefully, searching for something . Shock . Anger . Denial . Anything . There was nothing . When he finished, he lowered the paper slightly . His eyes met hers again . Still nothing . “You’re sure .” It was not a question . “Yes .” He looked back at the paper briefly . Then folded it once, neatly, like it was just another document . Not like it had just changed two lives . Laura felt something tighten in her chest . “Say something .” The words slipped out before she could stop them . His gaze lifted again . This time there was something there . Not emotion . Calculation . “I am .” Her brows pulled together slightly . “That’s all you have to say?” “What do you expect?” The calm tone irritated her more than anger would have . “I don’t know . Maybe a reaction .” “You’re pregnant . The test confirms it . The timeline fits .” He stepped closer, not invading her space but close enough to shift the air again . “The child is mine .” There it was . Not doubt . Not denial . Ownership . Laura swallowed . “And?” A pause . Brief . Controlled . Then he spoke again . “The child carries my name .” Her breath caught slightly . “That’s not something you decide alone .” “I already did .” The certainty in his voice felt like a wall closing in . “I’m not one of your business deals, Damian .” “Correct . You’re the mother of my heir .” The word heir landed heavy . Something in her expression must have shifted because his eyes narrowed slightly . Not in anger . In focus . “You came here for a reason .” “I came to tell you . Not to sign my life away .” “You misunderstand .” His tone did not change . “I don’t negotiate with uncertainty .” Laura felt her patience thin . “I don't want to invade your world . I told you because you deserved to know . That’s all .” She turned slightly, ready to leave before this became something she could not control . “Laura .” Her name stopped her . She had not told him her name . Slowly, she turned back . “How do you know my name?” He did not answer that . Instead, he stepped closer . Not threatening . Not aggressive . But deliberate . “You’re not leaving .” The words came quietly . Firm . Final . A cold feeling settled in her stomach . “That’s not your decision .” “It is now .” She let out a small, disbelieving breath . “You don’t get to control this .” “I control anything that threatens what belongs to me .” The meaning behind that sentence sank slowly . Her pulse picked up . “I’m not a threat .” “No .” A slight pause . “But what you carry is .” The room felt smaller . “You’re serious .” “Yes .” The calm answer made it worse . Laura took a step back . “I’m leaving .” She moved toward the door . It opened before she reached it . Two men stood outside .Not hospital staff . Security . Her steps slowed . Something shifted in her chest . Not fear alone . Realization . She turned back slowly . Damian stood where she left him . Watching her . Not angry . Not rushed . Certain . “You don’t get to do this .” His gaze did not waver . “I already have .” Her heart started beating harder now . “This is insane .” “No . This is necessary .” Laura shook her head slightly . “You think you can just lock me up because of this?” “Yes .” The simplicity of his answer hit harder than anything else . Silence stretched between them . Heavy . Unavoidable . Her mind raced through options . None of them felt real anymore . “I won’t stay .” “You will .” Another pause . Then he added quietly . “For the child .” That stopped her . Not his power . Not his control . The child . Her hand moved again to her stomach without thinking . And in that small moment of hesitation… He saw it . That was all he needed . He turned slightly toward the door . “Take her home .” Laura’s head snapped up . “Home?” His eyes returned to hers . “My mansion .” Her breath caught . “No . I’m not going anywhere with you .” The guards stepped forward . Not rough . Not forceful yet but ready . Real . This was real . Laura took a step back instinctively . “You can’t do this .” Damian held her gaze . Cold . Certain . Unmoved . “Watch me .” The guards reached for her arms . And in that moment, as reality closed in around her… Laura realized something she should have understood earlier . This was not a conversation . It was a decision . And she was no longer in control of it .
