Clay lay blinking in the bright light, puzzled by the ringing. It took him nearly a minute to rouse to the point where he realised it was the signal to get up. He must have fallen asleep eventually, but his sleep had not been restful. The faces of those he’d killed had followed him into his dreams. He dragged himself up and prepared to face another day.
