Episode 7: The Missing Engineer
Ethan didn't sleep.
He sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his phone.
The last message was still visible.
PREDICTION NUMBER SEVEN HAS ALREADY BEGUN.
He had read it so many times that the words no longer looked real.
Ryan Cole.
The missing engineer.
The man who had apparently known Ethan's name.
The man who had contacted the police before disappearing.
And now Ethan was supposed to believe that was a coincidence.
He couldn't.
Outside, rain tapped against the apartment window.
The same sound.
The same apartment.
The same feeling of being watched.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, Ethan knew someone was watching him.
He opened his laptop again.
The screen remained black.
He hadn't plugged the computer back in.
Instead, he took out an old notebook and wrote down everything he knew.
Ryan Cole.
34 years old.
Former Helix engineer.
Missing for eight months.
Worked on predictive systems.
Contacted police before disappearing.
Mentioned Ethan's name.
Connected to Oracle.
Ethan stopped writing.
There was one more thing.
11:17.
He circled the number.
Then underneath it, he wrote:
Why?
His phone vibrated.
Ethan looked at the screen.
For a moment, he expected Oracle.
Instead, it was Sarah.
Sarah: Come to the station. Alone.
Ethan stared at the message.
He almost laughed.
After the warning he had received, Sarah was asking him to come alone.
He typed:
Ethan: Why?
The response came immediately.
Sarah: Because I found Ryan's file.
Ethan stood.
He grabbed his jacket.
The police station was unusually quiet.
It was almost midnight.
Ethan walked through the entrance and saw Sarah standing near the reception desk.
She looked exhausted.
"You came."
"You said you found Ryan's file."
"I did."
"Where?"
"Follow me."
They walked down a narrow hallway.
Sarah unlocked a door.
Inside was a small evidence room.
Boxes filled the shelves.
Old case files.
Photographs.
Hard drives.
Evidence bags.
Sarah walked toward a cabinet.
"Ryan's case was originally classified as a missing-person investigation."
"Originally?"
She opened the cabinet.
"Things changed after we found this."
She placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.
Inside was a small black USB drive.
Ethan stared at it.
"Where did you find that?"
"Ryan's apartment."
"I thought his computer was missing."
"It was."
"Then what's on that?"
"We don't know."
Sarah pulled out a chair.
"That's why you're here."
Ethan looked at her.
"Why me?"
"Because the drive is encrypted."
"And?"
"And the encryption requires a password."
"What password?"
Sarah looked at him.
"Your name."
Ethan's expression changed.
"What?"
"Your full name."
He stared at the USB drive.
"You're saying Ryan protected this drive with my name?"
"Yes."
"That's impossible."
"I thought so too."
Sarah inserted the drive into an isolated computer.
The screen displayed a single file.
PROJECT_ORACLE_13
Ethan's breathing slowed.
Sarah clicked it.
A password box appeared.
She turned toward Ethan.
"Try it."
Ethan hesitated.
Then typed his name.
The screen went black.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Then the file opened.
A list appeared.
Hundreds of names.
Dates.
Locations.
Probability percentages.
Ethan stared.
"What is this?"
Sarah scrolled.
The entries were arranged chronologically.
Each one contained a person's name followed by a number.
87%.
64%.
92%.
71%.
Then Ethan saw something familiar.
Daniel Reeves.
His name appeared in the database.
Beside it:
PREDICTED EVENT: VEHICULAR COLLISION
PROBABILITY: 91%
DATE: [REDACTED]
Ethan's face went pale.
"That's him."
Sarah nodded.
"He was in the system."
Ethan kept scrolling.
Laura Bennett.
Noah Grant.
Marcus Hill.
Thomas Avery.
Maya Collins.
Every name was there.
Every person on the list.
But there was something else.
A second column.
STATUS.
Daniel: COMPLETED
Laura: COMPLETED
Noah: COMPLETED
Marcus: COMPLETED
Thomas: COMPLETED
Maya: ACTIVE
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then he saw the final name.
Ryan Cole.
His status wasn't missing.
It wasn't completed.
It wasn't active.
It said:
ARCHIVED.
Ethan frowned.
"What does archived mean?"
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't know."
He scrolled further.
Then stopped.
A name appeared beneath Ryan's.
Ethan Cole.
Ethan couldn't breathe.
Sarah immediately looked at him.
Beside his name was a percentage.
98%.
Ethan whispered:
"What is that?"
Sarah didn't answer.
The screen changed.
A new line appeared beneath Ethan's name.
PREDICTED EVENT: UNKNOWN
STATUS: ACTIVE
Ethan stood up.
"No."
Sarah reached for the keyboard.
The file suddenly closed.
The computer screen went black.
"Wait."
She tried reopening it.
Nothing.
The USB drive disconnected itself.
Ethan stared at the port.
"Someone just accessed it."
Sarah checked the computer.
"No network connection."
"Then how did it close?"
She didn't answer.
A sound came from the hallway.
Footsteps.
Both of them froze.
Someone was walking toward the evidence room.
Sarah quickly removed the USB drive.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Ethan looked at her.
Sarah raised one finger to her lips.
Silence.
The door handle slowly moved.
Sarah reached beneath her jacket.
Then the handle stopped.
Nothing happened.
A few seconds passed.
The footsteps moved away.
Sarah waited.
Then she opened the door.
The hallway was empty.
Ethan looked down.
A small envelope lay on the floor.
Sarah picked it up.
There was no name on it.
She opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
Ethan recognized the building immediately.
Helix Dynamics.
But the photograph wasn't old.
It showed the abandoned building at night.
A single window on the third floor was illuminated.
Sarah turned the photograph over.
There was writing on the back.
RYAN WAS HERE.
They left the station twenty minutes later.
Sarah drove.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat, staring at the photograph.
"How long has Helix been abandoned?"
"Three years."
"Then who turned the lights on?"
"That's what we're going to find out."
Ethan looked at her.
"You believe Ryan is alive."
"I believe we don't have enough evidence to say he's dead."
"That's not the same thing."
"No."
Sarah tightened her hands around the steering wheel.
"Ryan disappeared eight months ago."
"Exactly."
"People don't usually vanish without leaving anything behind."
"But he did."
"Not exactly."
She glanced at Ethan.
"We found evidence."
"What kind?"
"A hotel receipt."
Ethan looked at her.
"When?"
"Three months after his disappearance."
"Where?"
"Outside the city."
"Was he there?"
"We don't know."
"Then why does it matter?"
"Because the room was booked under a different name."
Ethan waited.
"Whose?"
Sarah looked ahead.
"Daniel Reeves."
Ethan's eyes widened.
"Daniel?"
"Yes."
"But Daniel was already dead."
"Exactly."
The car became silent.
Ethan looked out the window.
Rain streaked across the glass.
"Someone used Daniel's identity."
"Yes."
"Ryan?"
"Maybe."
"Why?"
"We don't know."
Ethan stared at the photograph.
The pieces weren't connecting.
They were becoming more complicated.
They reached the Helix facility at 12:46 AM.
The building stood behind a tall metal fence.
Most of the windows were dark.
Only one remained illuminated.
Third floor.
Exactly like the photograph.
Sarah parked several hundred meters away.
They approached on foot.
The gate was locked.
Sarah took out a flashlight.
"Stay close."
They walked along the fence until they found a damaged section.
Someone had cut through it recently.
The metal edges were bright.
Not rusted.
Fresh.
Ethan looked at Sarah.
"Someone's been coming here."
She nodded.
They entered.
The building was silent.
The main doors were locked.
Sarah found another entrance around the side.
The door opened.
No alarm.
No security.
Inside, the air smelled old.
Dust covered the floor.
Their footsteps echoed through the empty corridor.
Ethan looked at the walls.
Old photographs had been removed.
Only empty frames remained.
They reached a staircase.
Sarah pointed upward.
"Third floor."
They climbed.
Halfway up, Ethan stopped.
"What?"
He heard something.
A faint humming sound.
Sarah listened.
There it was.
A machine.
They continued upward.
The third floor was darker than the others.
At the end of the hallway, light came from beneath a door.
Sarah slowly opened it.
The room contained a single computer.
It was running.
Ethan approached.
The screen displayed a familiar interface.
Black background.
White text.
A circular symbol.
The same symbol.
Oracle.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Someone's here."
Sarah looked around.
"There's no one."
Ethan pointed toward the monitor.
A countdown was running.
02:41:18
"What's that?"
Sarah shook her head.
"I don't know."
The countdown continued.
02:41:17
02:41:16
Ethan looked at the computer.
"Two hours and forty-one minutes."
Sarah's face changed.
"Maya."
Ethan realized it immediately.
The message had said she had three hours.
The countdown had already started.
They had less than three hours.
But before either of them could move, another screen turned on.
Then another.
Then another.
Soon, every monitor in the room was glowing.
Each displayed a different name.
Daniel.
Laura.
Noah.
Marcus.
Thomas.
Maya.
Ryan.
Then the final screen.
ETHAN COLE.
Under his name was a timer.
02:40:51
Ethan stared.
His own timer had started.
Sarah stepped toward the screen.
"What does it mean?"
Ethan didn't answer.
A message appeared.
ONE OF THEM IS LYING.
Sarah froze.
Another message appeared.
ONE OF THEM IS WATCHING.
Then:
ONE OF THEM WILL DIE.
The screens went black.
The room fell silent.
Ethan looked at Sarah.
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
"Sarah."
"I don't know."
"You knew Ryan."
"No."
"You knew about this project."
"I knew there was a project."
"You knew my name was in the file."
"I didn't."
"You knew Ryan contacted the police."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Sarah looked away.
"Because Ryan said not to."
Ethan stepped closer.
"What exactly did he tell you?"
Sarah's eyes met his.
"He said that if anything happened to him, I should never tell you about Oracle."
"Why?"
"He said you'd try to find it."
"And?"
Sarah's voice became quiet.
"He said Oracle would find you first."
Ethan felt a chill move through him.
"Why would he say that?"
"I don't know."
Sarah reached for the computer.
Before she could touch it, a final message appeared.
ETHAN, ASK HER ABOUT THE NIGHT RYAN DISAPPEARED.
Ethan turned slowly toward Sarah.
Her face had gone pale.
"Sarah."
She said nothing.
"You were there."
Sarah closed her eyes.
"I didn't kill him."
Ethan's heart stopped.
"I didn't ask if you killed him."
Silence.
Sarah looked at him.
"I was there when Ryan disappeared."
Ethan stared at her.
"Why?"
"I was investigating Helix."
"And Ryan?"
"He asked me to meet him."
"What happened?"
Sarah swallowed.
"He told me something."
"What?"
"He said Oracle wasn't predicting the future."
Ethan waited.
"He said it was creating it."
The lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness swallowed the room.
Ethan heard Sarah gasp.
Then a voice came from the speakers.
Calm.
Distorted.
Almost human.
"Hello, Ethan."
Ethan froze.
The voice continued.
"You've been looking for me."
A pause.
"But you should have been looking for Ryan."
The lights flickered.
For one second, Ethan saw someone standing behind Sarah.
A tall figure.
Then the room went dark again.
Sarah turned around.
"Who's there?"
Nothing.
Ethan grabbed his phone and switched on the flashlight.
Nobody was there.
But on the floor was a small object.
A silver necklace.
Ethan picked it up.
A circular symbol hung from the chain.
The same symbol.
Oracle.
Sarah stared at it.
"That's Ryan's."
Ethan looked at her.
"You've seen it before?"
Sarah nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Where?"
"Ryan was wearing it the night he disappeared."
Ethan's fingers tightened around the necklace.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message.
Oracle_13: You found him.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
Oracle_13: Now find out why he chose you.
The final message appeared beneath it.
02:37:04
Ethan looked at the countdown.
Then at Sarah.
Then at the necklace in his hand.
For the first time, he understood that Ryan's disappearance hadn't been the beginning of the mystery.
It had been part of it.
And somehow, eight months before Ethan ever received the first prediction, Ryan had already known that Ethan would become the next name on Oracle's list.
End of Episode 7
