CHAPTER 4

1028 Words
“Why are you here?” He barked at the lady he met at the door. What did all these women even want with him? If it was a month ago, he would have spoken to her very softly and sweetly but things have changed now and he did not want to be around anyone for any reason, especially women. It seemed as though the universe had turned its back on him and wanted to have nothing to do with him so he would do nothing with everyone as well. He could only look at them but see no good in them, as he thought that would give him all the peace he deserves. The gap between the haves and haves not in Astoria had made growing up easy for him and he was glad that he did not have any alien to wealth around him to combat with. But there was this one that they had kept around for long enough for her to be called a part of them. Alexander had practically grown up with her and he enjoyed her company at times even though they still had their boundaries as she was their maid. Her name is Sarah, a maid that has worked with them for years that he had forgotten to count. How could he not know how her knocks sound like? It was just a little softer so he would have guessed. Well, she was here now and there was nothing he could do about it, only discharge her with the mess she had in her hands. “I came to give you food. It is past noon and you have not come downstairs to eat so Madam asked me to bring it to your room” “I am not hungry. Never mind. Thank you but please take it away and you do not have to tell her that I did not eat the food.” He said bluntly shrugging away the pain he felt in his stomach. The pain he felt at his lower belly was from hungry. He barely had anytime to eat the night before and he started an hunger strike this day also. If he could die from not eating, he would have a long time ago but he barely had any appetite. He was too pained to desire food. “Please, Sir. Alex, you have barely had anything to eat for days now, could you please for my sake eat?” “Could you please for my sake, leave the room, Sarah? I am getting married tomorrow if you do not remember and you know just how that makes me feel?” “Yes, I do. But please eat, can I come in?” She said with puppy eyes and he knew that if he let her in, it would be for his own good. That way, she would be able to force him to eat, and he could also share his mind with her, he always does this and it makes him feel better. But he was not interested in doing that today, he just wanted her to be lost, when he is ready, he would come to eat. With the way she looked at him, he knew what she was up to and he knew also that accepting her offer now is better than longing for it later. If he let her come in now, he would avoid his mother coming into his room and lecturing him on why he needed to get married. And when she comes, he would have no choice than to force the food down his throat as she watched him. “Come in” he finally breathed silently and shook his head when she walked past him and into the room. He ate very silently and she watched him, not saying a word because she knew how disciplined he was with table manners. Even at times when he was on the brightest mood, he never made any sound like his plate and spoon barely clicked. “I hope you are enjoying your food?” Sarah asked as the usual custom was, not minding that she had stood for the longest period of her life. It was bad enough that his room suddenly looked like a cold graveyard, but it gave a different kind of smell as well that Sarah could not avoid but she still admired. She had watched him grow up to become a fine young man, even though she was only six years older than he was, and she could say she was proud of him. He was doing well for himself even though he looked to her like a daddy and mommy’s boy and she was able to rightly prove it when she heard about what happened with his personal life. It was weird that he could not even make a decision on when not to marry but she somehow was not surprised about that at all. “It was nice. Thank you for the help, Sarah.” He sounded weak already. He was gradually softening up to the help she was offering him and she was glad she had found a way to his heart. She stayed with him a little more and heard him pour out his mind on how dangerous and painful it was for him to get married the next day, and she counseled him the best way she could. When they were done talking, she went back to her room and for the first time in a long time, the Madam of the house did not ask her why she was late from coming back from the errand she sent her. Of course she knew that she had a lot of talking to do with Alex and when she asked after him, all Sarah could say was that he needed to rest and she was sure he was sleeping. Everyone knew that the next day was going to be a big day and like a dream, it panned out in all their faces. Alexander Morgan was getting married and he had not even seen his bride and no one where she was.
