CHAPTER 5

1034 Words
“It’s my wedding day today.” Alexander said to himself coldly as he tied the last lace of his shoe and went to the mirror to check himself out one last time. He had decided after listening to all that his maid, Sarah, had to stay and take the marriage in, endure until the very time he could run away. Maybe he would just run away and leave them all to their wealth and fate when the pressure subsides. So he would rather put a face up and try to pretend like everything was alright till he gets a way to be gone and never return. “Grrr” his phone rang loudly again, jerking him back to the misery he had found himself and he went to the table like the gentleman he is to get the phone. It hung up before he got there but he made out time to look at it and saw that it was his friend who called him and he had already missed his call four times. He had stopped them all from coming over and walking down the aisle with him as his best friends particularly because he thought they did not care about him anymore but they insisted they would come. They had also tried countlessly to explain to his parents why he should not get married yet (both the married and unmarried one amongst them) but they paid no heed. “Grrr” the phone rang again and he just knew that his boys were not going to give up on him ever, and that made him emotional. Alex knew himself that he had been too harsh on those guys but he was sure that they would do anything to still come cheer him up. That was true friendship and he sincerely valued them, even though he did not get the chance to say it. “Hello, Smart, how are you doing today?” He spoke without letting him speak at all. “I am not fine, Alex. Today is your wedding and you are not yet outside. We have even knocked on your door several times but there was no response. Where are you and what exactly are you up to?” “Wait, hold up. I just finished dressing up, I am in the dressing room. I will soon be out and ready to go, huh?” He said trying to sound as cool as possible. He had intentionally locked the door so he would have no intrusion as he just wanted to be on his own, particularly since the woman he was about to get married to was nowhere to be found as well. They all had no idea of where she had gone to but he did not care as he was not ready to carry his cross as heavy as it could be, not minding the harm it would cause to him. “Okay. Please come out quickly, everyone is waiting for you” Smart said as he hung up the call and Alex headed to the main door of the room, wondering who else it was that could be waiting for him. What were they doing waiting for him and why are they waiting for him? He had hoped that his father did not give the invitation out to so many people because he knew that almost the whole of Astoria were aware of his marriage but they could not come if they are not invited. He had specifically made a request to his father to ensure that only those who were needed at the wedding were allowed to attend so not so many people could see his grief. And the wedding was also going to be a simple one in a garden when they came back from the Court proceedings. His mother had insisted on that, possibly because they wanted to ensure that he did not divorce his wife. Well planned! Alex walked down the door confidently but he suddenly lost his charisma as he could hear voices of people in the living room. He took a quick breath before coming down the stairs finally because he knew that all eyes would be on him. Ignoring them all, he went outside and to the car that was already waiting for him so he could proceed with every one of the wedding arrangements. He had checked if he would see his bride but assumed then that it was either she had gone ahead of him (after all, she was getting married to his parents) or instead she was still putting on her makeup. She would be dressed so well and people would say she is the luckiest and most beautiful girl in the room since it was her wedding day but they never really thought about what he would be feeling as the one getting married to her. “Alex, we are here” Smart said, sounding different and calm, holding his hands and looking at him very intimately, as if trying to share in his pains. “Thank you, a few minutes before I get down please” Alex said and took a sharp breath. “That’s alright! I know how this must be for you and I am very sorry, it has to happen this way. You are a strong man. You would get out of this in one piece. I trust you to be fine, Alex” Smart said again to him and Alex knew those few words contained bottled up emotions. “Thank you. I am alright. I would be just fine. Thanks for coming around” Alex finally let his pride down to say as he opened the door and stepped out of the car. “I got you, man. You know I always do” Smart said, calling after him as he also made his way out of the car, giving the driver a chance to pull over properly. Alex looked at the beautifully decorated court, and knew that with the way everything was well arranged and beautiful cars were all over the place, his parents were here. But something did not quite sit well with him. Where is the bride?
