Coming closer

The day after their shared conversation about their childhoods, Victoria found herself in King's office, still reeling from the emotional intensity of their discussion. She glanced at him as he reviewed some documents, his focus entirely on his work. Despite the situation, there was a part of her that couldn’t deny the growing attraction she felt toward him. Clearing her throat, she decided to ask the question that had been on her mind. "King, when can I go home?" King looked up from his papers, his expression softening as he considered her question. "Victoria," he began carefully, "for your safety, it’s best if you stay here for a little longer. I want to make sure everything is resolved before you leave." Victoria frowned slightly, a mix of frustration and understanding in her expression. "How long are we talking about?" King leaned back in his chair, his gaze steady. "One week. After that, if everything goes smoothly, you can go home." She nodded slowly, processing his words. A week. It wasn’t what she wanted to hear, but she knew he was right. The situation was still too dangerous. But at the same time, the thought of spending another week with King, getting to know him even more, didn’t seem as daunting as it might have a few days ago. As if reading her thoughts, King stood up and walked over to her, his demeanor surprisingly gentle. "Why don’t we make the most of this time? Let me take you to dinner tonight. And tomorrow, I’ll show you around my business, give you a glimpse of what I do." Victoria looked up at him, surprised by the offer. "Dinner?" King smiled, a hint of warmth in his usually stoic expression. "Yes, dinner. I think we both could use a break from everything." She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Okay. Dinner sounds nice." That evening, Victoria found herself in a restaurant she never would have imagined setting foot in under different circumstances. It was elegant, the kind of place where everything from the food to the decor was designed to impress. As they sat across from each other, King was more relaxed than she had ever seen him, and she couldn’t help but feel a flutter of something in her chest. They talked over dinner, their conversation flowing more easily than before. King shared stories about his business, the challenges he faced, and the people he worked with. He was passionate about what he did, and Victoria could see why he was so successful. There was a depth to him that she hadn’t expected, and the more he revealed, the more she found herself drawn to him. The next day, King kept his promise and took her to his business—a sprawling, sophisticated operation that was far more complex than she had imagined. As he led her through the various departments, explaining the intricacies of each, Victoria couldn’t help but be impressed. He was a man of high morals, dedicated to his work, and respected by everyone who worked for him. Throughout the week, Victoria found herself looking forward to their dinners and their time together. The tension that had once defined their relationship slowly began to dissolve, replaced by something warmer, something neither of them fully acknowledged but was impossible to ignore. By the end of the week, Victoria was no longer the same woman who had first been brought to the mansion. She had come to see King not as the cold, calculating man she once thought he was, but as someone who had faced his own battles, someone who, despite everything, had remained true to his principles. And somewhere along the way, she realized she was falling for him.
