Chapter 5: Beneath the Surface

1212 Words
The days after the party were marked by an eerie silence. Sebastian’s influence lingered in Nina’s life like a dark shadow, one she couldn’t shake, no matter how hard she tried. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his face, his words replaying in her mind: You’re part of my world now, Nina. You can try to fight it, but it won’t change the fact that I have the power here. That realization was harder to swallow than she cared to admit. She had always prided herself on her independence, on being the one who called the shots in her life. But now, in the wake of Sebastian’s world, she wasn’t so sure of anything anymore. He had a way of making her feel both insignificant and vital at the same time—like a piece in a game she wasn’t prepared to play. It was Thursday evening when she received a message from him. I need to see you. Tonight. Nina hesitated. She had been avoiding him, resisting the pull that she couldn’t quite explain. But her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a photo—a simple shot of his hand holding a glass of wine, with a caption that read: Waiting for you. It was a subtle push, one that made her feel both trapped and desired. Her heart raced as she typed out a response, her fingers shaking slightly. Where? My penthouse. You know where it is. Of course, she did. She knew exactly where his penthouse was. It was the place where she had felt both exhilarated and suffocated, the place where she had seen the truth of his power up close. With a sigh, Nina grabbed her coat and left her apartment. There was no turning back now. She was in his world, and whether she liked it or not, she had to face what that meant. When Nina arrived at Sebastian’s penthouse, the doorman let her in without question. She had become a regular in his life, and everyone around him knew it. The elevator ride felt like an eternity as she ascended to the top floor, her nerves tangled with a mixture of anticipation and dread. The door opened before she could knock, and there he was—Sebastian, standing tall in his tailored suit, as perfect and composed as ever. “Good evening, Nina,” he said, his voice smooth but with an edge that made her stomach tighten. “Come in.” She stepped inside, her eyes scanning the lavish interior of the penthouse. It was exactly as she remembered—everything in its place, every corner designed to perfection. But tonight, there was something different. The air between them felt heavier, charged with an unspoken tension. “I didn’t expect you to show up,” Sebastian continued, his voice casual, but Nina could hear the undertone of something else. Was it disappointment? Or maybe curiosity? She couldn’t quite tell. “I didn’t expect to either,” Nina replied, her words slipping out before she could stop them. “But here I am.” Sebastian’s lips curled into a small smile, one that was almost too knowing. “You’re always full of surprises, Nina.” She followed him into the living room, where he gestured for her to sit. As she lowered herself onto the plush sofa, she couldn’t help but feel out of place, like an outsider in his world. “I want to show you something,” Sebastian said suddenly, his tone shifting from playful to serious. “Come with me.” Without waiting for a response, he led her down a hallway, past rooms she had never seen before. The place was enormous, and every inch of it screamed power—yet it also felt strangely empty, like a hollow shell waiting for something to fill it. They reached a door at the end of the hall, one she had never noticed before. He unlocked it with a key from his pocket and pushed it open. Inside, the room was dimly lit, the only source of light coming from a large desk in the center, covered with papers and a few open books. Nina frowned as she stepped inside. “What is this place?” “This is where the real Sebastian Wright is,” he said softly, his voice surprisingly vulnerable. “Not the businessman, not the man you see at those parties. This is where I come to think, to be myself. To get away from the world.” Nina glanced around the room, taking in the bookshelves lining the walls, the art on the walls that felt oddly personal—nothing like the cold, calculated aesthetic of the rest of his penthouse. It was as if she had stepped into a different world altogether. “Why are you showing me this?” Nina asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Sebastian paused, his eyes meeting hers. For the first time, she saw something other than the cold exterior he had shown her so far. There was something deeper in his gaze—something raw, something real. “Because you need to understand something,” he said, his voice quieter now. “This… This is who I am. Not the man you’ve seen at those parties, not the one you think you know. This is the part of me that no one gets to see. The part that no one ever will.” The words hit Nina harder than she expected. She wasn’t sure what he was trying to say, but she knew one thing for sure—Sebastian Wright was not just the arrogant billionaire she had first thought him to be. He was hiding something, something dark, and she was getting closer to it than she ever intended. Her pulse quickened. She was standing on the edge of something she didn’t fully understand, something that could destroy her if she wasn’t careful. “You’ve been avoiding me,” Sebastian said, his voice cutting through the silence. “Why?” Nina swallowed, her mind racing. She had been avoiding him, yes, but it wasn’t just because of his arrogance or his wealth. It was because every time she was near him, she felt as if she was falling deeper into a trap, one she didn’t know how to escape from. “I don’t know how to deal with you, Sebastian,” she admitted quietly. “You… You make me feel things I don’t want to feel. You confuse me.” For a moment, he didn’t say anything, just watched her, his eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and something darker. Then, finally, he spoke. “That’s the point, Nina,” he said softly. “You’re here because you’re not supposed to understand. You’re here because I need someone who can’t walk away. Not because they want to—because they can’t.” The words struck Nina like a blow. She wanted to leave, to walk out of that room and never look back, but she couldn’t. Not yet. Not when she was so close to unraveling the mystery of who Sebastian truly was. And just like that, Nina realized something. She was already tangled in his world, and there was no way out.
