The call

I had become wary of having to explain myself over and over, I didn't answer. I only got up and headed towards the door. If only my parents were here they would have believed me. I wouldn't need to explain anything. Even though I knew the tale was hard to believe since Ray played the perfect husband and Vivian the perfect best friend. I headed towards my car , I fought the tears that were now forcing its way out of my eyes. But could I win a war like that when my tears had already overpowered me? They flowed involuntarily down my cheeks. Once inside the car I drove, not back to the house. The one that had seven years of my life stored in it . No ,I drove right back to my hotel room and once inside I sobbed my eyes out. They hadn't just cheated , they were making me look crazy. They were out to ruin the only family I had left. A message popped on my phone screen, “furious huh? That your grandparents didn't believe you tonight? Lmao. Eleanor, we are just getting started. Watch as I turn everyone you once loved against you.” The message was from Vivian. She'd won tonight and she didn't want to miss a chance to taunt me.. I slipped the phone under my pillow and just then I heard another beep from my phone. I pulled it out from under my pillow. Another message popped up, “See? I'm cruising your little gift alongside your loving husband. “ She'd attached a video to the message. She was driving and Ray sat beside her and then she kissed him. I know Vivian has always been jobless but I didn't know it was to the core. How could she make taunting me full time job? Doesn't she have any priorities at all? How can someone be so jobless to make someone else’s life her job to ruin? How have I been blind to this part of Vivian? maybe I had been deceived by her pretense owing to the fact that she can act so well. She should have thought of building a career as an actress instead of being a parasite sucking her father's wealth dry. My phone rang and it was Adrian calling. I picked the call and his voice blared in the phone, “Hello, Eleanor.” “Hi, Adrian.” “I'm sorry the other day you called, I was busy with work.” “ Okay.” “I'm quite surprised Eleanor that you remembered someone like your cousin still exists. I'm surprised you dialed my number.” “Okay, but if I don't call, why don't you call instead?” “I've always been the one reaching out.” “But we're family. You're not supposed to count how many times you call family.” “Okay, you win.” “Alright.” “So what made you call me today? I know that it's not without reason that you called.” “I want you to help me draft a divorce agreement.” “Divorce agreement for who?” Adrian asked, his tone sounding surprised. “Ray and I are getting a divorce.” I replied flatly . “Can't you both talk it over? A divorce is extreme.” “No, we have made our decision and it's final.” “Eleanor, you can reconsider. Remember you and Ray have been together since forever, you both shouldn't throw it away just like that. You know what? I need to see you. We need to talk about this. You both could be making a big mistake.” After scheduling a day for the meeting , Adrian hung up. I thought about the conversation with Adrian. “Remember you both have been together since forever, you both shouldn't throw it away.” That part of the conversation lingered in my mind. Ray had thrown it away without even thinking twice. All those years had meant nothing to him and he could just forget it like that. He'd thrown it away, he hadn't just thrown it away because of anyone else, but because of Vivian of all people in the world. I just lay in bed memory after memory running through my mind. I remembered the first day he'd spoken to me after economics class. How cheerful he had been, his irresistible looks, his golden brown eyes, his sexy lips and his confidence. How the girls used to drool over him. How I had become the subject of bullying because Ray chose to love me. How we'd walked together through all those years. The love we shared. The love that I couldn't let go of. The love I had thought would last forever. I had been a fool to think forever was a real thing. Now I know better ,forever is just a lie and deceit. It isn't in any way real. One thing I understood is nothing is ever certain in life, you think you have it and then one day it slips out of your hands and disappears. And I had learnt another thing as well, humans disappoint. There's no use putting your hopes on a fellow human being, they could change tomorrow and you would be disappointed. As the bouts of tears streamed down my cheeks, I wiped them off with my palms. I stared blankly into space, the memories that tormented me wouldn't just let me be. And somewhere underneath my mind I wished I could get my memory erased.
