the ceremony 42

Chapter 42 Dean POV I had to let the girls know the ceremony was about to begin. Rage had already seen Penny and said she looked beautiful, but that only made the waiting worse. The only time I’d seen her today was when we woke up tangled together in our sheets. Half a day without her felt like weeks…I just hoped she liked the dress I’d chosen. I had no idea what style she preferred. The women in the shop had stared at me like I was some kind of creep for buying a gown alone. I paid quickly and left, muttering under my breath. But when I saw the deep blue fabric, I’d pictured it against her skin, instantly. I’d imagined her standing beside me..my equal. The doors to the ceremony hall opened…And there she was. The dark blue dress clung to her perfectly, flowing around her like midnight water. Her hair was pulled into a high bun, soft tendrils curling around her face. Tiny flowers were woven through the strands, delicate and beautiful…just like her. The entire room fell silent. Every vampire. Every elder. Every warrior…Silent. Rage and Elisa escorted her toward the stage, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. My mate. My queen…My father stepped forward. “Hello, everyone. I know I’ve been king for centuries…so long I’ve lost count of my own age.” A ripple of chuckles moved through the crowd. “My mate and I are here today to announce that we are stepping down. My son and his mate will be taking the thrones. Does anyone reject this union or their right to rule?” He scanned the hall slowly…No one spoke. Not a whisper. Not a protest. Only smiles and nods. “Very well,” he said, turning to me. “Son, I’ve trained you since you were a child to be king. I’ve watched you grow into the man I knew you would become. Now it is your time. Do you promise to protect this coven? To ensure none harm our kind? To rule with an iron fist when necessary…but also with love? Do you promise to fight beside them and for them? To do what must be done to sustain them and protect this realm from intruders?” I stepped forward, feeling every eye on me. “Yes, Father. I swear it before all. I give my oath that I will protect our people. I will fight for them and beside them. I will ensure no one enters this realm with the intent to harm us. I will be the king they deserve.” He studied me for a moment… then nodded…It was Penny’s turn. My mother stood beside her, regal and calm. “As you all know,” Mother began, “the king and I are stepping down. I will admit, I once had doubts about Penny being here… about her being my son’s mate.” Murmurs stirred softly through the hall. “But she has trained tirelessly beside me. She has proven her strength, her loyalty, and her heart. She has made my son truly happy.” She paused. “Does anyone reject this union or her right to be queen?” Again, silence…Mother smiled. “Penny, I have been queen for centuries. It is time for me to rest and stand beside my husband rather than before my people. Do you promise to rule with strength and compassion? To fight for them and beside them? To care for them as deeply as they will care for you… and to keep my son in his place?” Soft laughter echoed through the hall…Penny lifted her chin, confidence radiating from her. “Yes, Elena. I give you my oath and my word. I will rule with love and with an iron fist when required. I will fight for them and beside them. I will care for them as my own. And I promise to keep your son in his place…though I am certain he will try to do the same to me.” More laughter. Pride swelled in my chest…Father stepped forward with the ceremonial blade. “Give me your hands. Palms up.” We obeyed…The blade sliced across the center of my palm, then Penny’s. Our blood dripped into the silver cup. Father added a drop of his own, and Mother did the same. This was how royal power was transferred…blood binding blood…He handed the cup to me. “Drink, and feel the power of royalty.” I tipped it to my lips, swallowing only a small amount as tradition demanded. A rush of energy surged through me…ancient, heavy, commanding….Then he handed it to Penny. “Drink, and feel the power of royalty.” She took her sip, steady and fearless…Father poured the remaining blood onto the ground, sealing the rite…He raised my arm. Mother lifted Penny’s. “Behold your new King and Queen of the vampire world!” Cheers erupted. Some howled. Some hissed. Others pounded their fists against their chests. It wasn’t hostility…it was celebration. Our way...Father pulled me into a tight embrace. “Keep your oath,” he murmured. “And remember…if you ever need guidance, I’m here. I’ve left notes, pinned reminders, records of everything. You won’t face this alone.” “I know,” I said quietly. “Thank you.” Mother hugged Penny just as fiercely, whispering words meant only for her…Then they stepped down into the crowd..not as rulers, but as themselves. For the first time in centuries. Penny turned to me…My queen. I took her hand and brought it to my lips. “My queen.” She smiled softly. “My king.” The bond between us pulsed, stronger now..deeper. We left the hall together, the cheers fading behind us as we walked toward our chambers. The weight of the crown rested on my shoulders… but the heat in her gaze reminded me of another promise we had yet to seal…She wanted me. Just as fiercely as I wanted her..Tonight wasn’t only about power..It was about us. It was time to seal our union… and make it truly official.
