chapter 17
Prince Auburn POV
I was right in the middle of flirting with one of the unmated females in the kingdom when her eyes suddenly glazed over.
Shit….That meant Dad was mind-linking the entire kingdom, and I needed to listen. With a sigh, I opened my mind to hear him.
A dragon is in the kingdom….Not just any dragon…the King of Dragons…Well, now I had to see that.
The girl I’d been talking to gasped and ran off to “get ready” to meet him. I rolled my eyes but followed the crowd anyway.
When I got there, I frowned….There was no dragon. Just a man standing there…But his eyes…
They were the darkest gold I’d ever seen. Not yellow. Not amber. Gold. Like molten metal. It was… impressive.
When the girls came out, I nearly laughed out loud. Half of them were wearing next to nothing, and the other half had piled on so much makeup they looked ridiculous. I wouldn’t be caught dead beside any of them. The one I had been talking to earlier? Her skirt was so short I could’ve slipped my hand right up… Yeah. No…Thankfully, the Dragon King dismissed them and told them to change…That’s when I really had to bite back a laugh. They nearly tripped over each other trying to leave first.
When they returned, they looked much better. Less desperate. Still desperate… but better.
I kept staring at him, wondering what it would feel like to have wings. To actually fly. To soar over the kingdom without needing to shift.
That had to be the coolest feeling in the world.
I’m seventeen now. One of my best friends, Ivory, was born the same day as me. Our mothers still joke about who was born first.
Ivory doesn’t want a mate…She hates the idea of it.
Me? I can’t wait…The thought of finding her one day… my mate. Training together. Fighting together. Protecting our kingdom side by side. But also having our own space… my time, her time, and then our time…Ivory still hasn’t told me why she doesn’t want a mate.
One day, I’ll get it out of her…But until then, I can’t help worrying.
What if I never find mine?..I just haven’t found her yet.
Con POV
It’s been several weeks since Penny has been gone…And honestly?..I couldn’t care less.
I tried to pretend I’d lost everything, but I couldn’t even keep a straight face. The only thing I actually needed were those papers.
My tracker called earlier. Said the rogue had been speaking with a vampire from another realm…Penny is definitely there.
Not just there…she’s the Vampire Prince’s mate.
Well, damn….She rejects me and lands a prince?
The funny thing is… she won’t last long with a vampire.
“Alright, Ambrose,” I said over the phone. “How can you flush Penny out?”
“The rogue has an idea,” he replied. “And so does the female vampire. Just be ready.”
“I don’t care what the idea is. I want her in two days. Is that clear? If I don’t have her in two days..”
“Sir, it’s going to take more than two days. Give us time and you’ll have her. We already have a plan. Just have some patience.”
I growled into the phone before finally snapping, “Fine. Do what needs to be done.” I hung up, irritation burning in my chest.
How hard is it to drag someone back from another realm?
“Hey, dumbass,” my wolf suddenly muttered in my head.
I blinked…He hadn’t spoken in days.
“You do realize she’s the prince’s mate, right? They have to be careful. If you’re in such a hurry about those papers, just forge them. They won’t notice.”
I almost laughed. When he finally decides to talk, he insults me.
Typical…Still… forging them might not be a bad idea.
With a sigh, I leaned back in my chair, waiting for the council to enter my office so I could get this meeting over with.
Two days…One way or another, I’ll have what I want.
