chapter 19 Ivory’s POV After I talked to Mom, I wanted to lay down and get some sleep, but I couldn’t. Every time I closed my eyes, they popped right back open. My mind wouldn’t shut off..So I got on my computer and started looking up dragons. There were all kinds..shifters and full-blooded dragons. Some were different colors, others were just one solid shade, but they were all beautiful. Powerful. Majestic…Then I clicked on a photo of the King of Dragons…The moment I saw him, something inside me shifted. I felt drawn to him…And I knew exactly what that meant. My stomach twisted. I didn’t want that feeling. I didn’t want a mate. Not now. Maybe not ever. So I shoved the feeling down as hard as I could and slammed the laptop shut…I couldn’t let myself think about him. Instead, I went down to my father’s library. While scanning the shelves, I found something tucked behind a row of old warrior manuals—a spell book. I wasn’t even sure Dad knew it was there. I brought it up to my room and flipped through the pages until something caught my eye…A scent-hiding spell…My heart started racing. According to the page, I could hide my scent from anyone..even the King of Dragons..for twenty full moons. But it came with a price. I could only use it once. And during those moons, I would still feel the pull toward my mate. I would have to fight the bond every single full moon…Worse… my mate would search for me. He would cry out for me..The thought made my chest ache. But I knew what I had to do. I wasn’t ready to give up my dreams. I still wanted to travel. I wanted to go to college. I wanted to become the best warrior this pack had ever seen..A knock at my door interrupted my thoughts. Mom walked in carrying a tray. She set it down in front of me, and I immediately grabbed the roast beef sandwich. It was my favorite. After I finished eating, I looked up at her. “Mom… I was wondering. Is there really a dragon called the King of Dragons? I mean, I looked him up and saw pictures…his human form and his dragon form. Is he alive or… dead?” I couldn’t lie to her. But I also couldn’t tell her I already knew he was my mate…She didn’t seem suspicious. But what she said next shocked me. “Honey, yes. There is a real King of Dragons. He’s alive and well. And… he’s coming here in several months to search for his mate. Your father and I are sending you around the country so you won’t be here. We know you don’t want a mate right now. So to be safe, we’re sending you away until you’re ready for the bond.” My heart nearly stopped…He’s coming here…In several months. If he doesn’t find his mate in the other packs first… he’ll come here. “Wait,” I said quickly. “So if he doesn’t find his mate elsewhere, he’ll be here?”..Mom nodded….I took a steadying breath. “Mom, to be honest… I don’t want to travel. I want to go to college. I already sent in applications. There’s one close to home..I’ll stay on campus though. You know the Harvard School for Werewolves? Humans attend too. I heard back from them. I got in. When I graduate next week, I move into my dorm.” Mom jumped up so fast she nearly knocked over the tray. She wrapped her arms around me so tight I thought my ribs might crack. “Mom… I can’t breathe.”..She quickly let go. Seconds later Dad burst into the room. “Your mom just told me the good news! I am so proud of you, Ivory!” He picked me up in a crushing hug. “Dad… I really can’t breathe.”..He laughed and set me down. “So you’re moving into the dorms? When will we see you?” I laughed. “You can see me whenever you want. I’ll have my own dorm. I already paid for four years. I even applied for a part-time job…and I got it. I’ll work nights so I can study during the day. I’ll buy my own food. I’ve thought of everything.” “Honey,” Mom said gently, “you don’t need a job. We can give you money whenever you need it.” “I know,” I said. “But I’m the Alpha and Luna’s daughter. I don’t want anyone thinking I’m a spoiled brat. I want to earn my own way.” They both laughed, and soon I was laughing too. “You’ve always been independent,” Dad said. “We’re proud of you. And you’re not spoiled. You’ve always wanted to do things on your own.” Mom nodded. “And you’ll still be gone when the Dragon King comes. So just in case you’re his mate… he won’t see you. He won’t scent you.” “That’s right,” I said confidently. “I’ll visit sometimes, but I’ll use cover spray so he won’t smell me.” Dad crossed his arms with a small smirk. “So, young lady, you’ve thought of everything, haven’t you?” ...I lifted my chin high..“Yes…Yes, I have.” But deep down…I wasn’t sure I had thought of everything at all.
