chapter 9
Caddy POV
I sat there staring at my mate while he questioned me about making a fool of myself in front of the Alpha.
I didn’t understand why he was so upset. He’d dated other girls. So why was he mad at me?
I folded my arms and scooted to the other side of the couch. This was my home. If he started yelling, I’d just tell him to leave.
“Well, for your information,” I began, lifting my chin, “thirteen years ago...if you remember….there was a pack meeting. The Alpha announced he had found his mate and would claim her at the mating ball.”...I swallowed….“I thought it was me.”...I could still feel the humiliation.
“I dressed up in a beautiful gown. I did my hair perfectly. I went to that ball thinking my life was about to change.”
I let out a bitter laugh…“But it wasn’t me.”...My voice softened.
“When I got home, I didn’t leave my room for two days. All I did was cry. My mother told me one day I’d find a mate who would love me, cherish me, only want me. A mate who would look into my eyes and know I was the only one for him.”...I met his gaze.
“So if you’re going to be upset… should I be upset with you for dating other girls when you knew all along I was your mate?”
He chuckled and gently pulled me back into his arms.
“Caddy,” he murmured, “trust me, I remember those days. I remember not seeing you for a few days. I wanted to come to you so badly. I wanted to comfort you. But we were young. I couldn’t tell you.”....His thumb brushed over my cheek.
“My parents knew we were mates. They told me to date around. To try to get you off my mind until the time was right. But no matter who I took out… you were always there. Do you think it was coincidence that I worked every shift when you got off work?”
I blinked.
“No. I asked to take those shifts. Just to see you. Just to see the smile you gave me every time you drove through.”..I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped me.
“So… you’re not mad at me for embarrassing myself with the Alpha?” I asked softly.
“I don’t like it,” he admitted. “But no. You didn’t know we were mates. Are you mad at me for dating around?”
I should have been…But I wasn’t….I shook my head.
He growled low in his chest and pulled me closer, crashing his lips to mine in a passionate kiss. My body melted against his. I kissed him back just as fiercely…He broke away to catch his breath, pressing his forehead against mine.
“Mate. Mine.”
“Mate. Mine,” I whispered back.
He wasn’t an Alpha. He wasn’t a Beta. He was a guard.
And I didn’t care…All I cared about was that he was mine.
“You know,” he murmured, holding me tightly, “I waited years to hold you like this. And now that I have you… I’m never letting you go.”
And for the first time in years, I felt chosen.
Vampire King Seth POV
My son had been gone for two days.
When he left like this, he usually contacted me…mind to mind…to let me know he would be away longer than usual. But this time? Nothing.
We survived quietly. Sometimes we hunted animals. Sometimes, when the thirst became unbearable, we fed from humans…but never enough to kill. We healed the wound. We disappeared.
Hunters were always a threat. Faster than most. Deadly.
We had hidden for centuries….I had even considered uniting our realm with others…perhaps speaking with the Queen of Wolves, the King of Lycans. The supernatural world had long been divided.
Then I felt it…My son was alive….And something more.
The bond…Powerful. Stronger than when I found my own mate.
He had found his….I tried to reach him. Demanded he return home. Silence….My mate, Nila, stepped beside me.
“Seth… did you feel it too? He’s found his mate.”
“Yes,” I said quietly. “But something is wrong.”
Days passed…On the fifth night, his voice finally reached me.
“Father. I am alive. I was attacked. But my mate found me. She gave me her blood to heal.”..My eyes widened.
“She’s a werewolf, Father. Beautiful. Kind. She was willing to let me leave and never return because she feared for my safety. I won’t come home without her. I’m asking permission to bring her.”
A vampire…Mated to a werewolf...Unheard of….But she had saved him.
“Bring her home, son,” I said firmly. “I will speak with your mother. Do you know who attacked you?”
“Yes, Father. We will speak of it soon.”..The connection ended.
I turned to Nila.
“He has found his mate. She saved him. But there is… a…complication.” Her eyes narrowed.
“What complication?”
“She is a wolf.” The shock on her face was immediate.
“That’s impossible. A werewolf cannot be mated to a vampire. She will bring danger to our kind.”
“And he brings danger to hers,” I countered calmly. “I will not force our son to break his bond. They are coming home. Be kind to her. She is already worried.”.?Nila sighed heavily.
“I will accept the mating. But I do not have to like it.”
I chuckled.
“Nila, when do you ever like anything?”..She laughed despite herself…And then the portal opened…We stepped outside together.
Our son was coming home…With a wolf at his side.
And the world, as we knew it, was about to change.
