The Whispering Forest

800 Words
Chapter 2 Morning arrived, but Willowmere did not awaken with its usual cheer. The marketplace was unusually quiet. Shopkeepers opened their stalls without their familiar greetings. Farmers glanced nervously toward the dark line of trees that marked the edge of the Whispering Forest. Everyone had seen the sky split open the night before. No one could explain it. Children excitedly retold the story. "It was a dragon!" "No, it was a falling star!" "My father says it was lightning." "My grandmother says magic is coming back." The adults tried to ignore them. Inside a small stone cottage near the river, the curious thirteen-year-old sat by the window, staring at the forest. The strange blue light from the night before refused to leave their mind. There was something about it... Something that felt like a voice calling from far away. Not with words. With feeling. A knock echoed on the door. "Come in," called the child's guardian. Old Elias entered, leaning on his weathered staff. His face looked more serious than ever. "I hoped you hadn't left yet." "Left?" "The forest." The child blinked. "I haven't gone." Old Elias sighed with relief. "Good." He reached into his cloak and placed a small leather pouch on the table. Inside was a silver pendant shaped like a seven-pointed star. "Keep this with you." "What is it?" "My father gave it to me." "And his father gave it to him." "It won't stop danger..." "...but it may help danger recognize that you're not its enemy." Before another question could be asked, Old Elias turned toward the window. "The forest is awake." Outside, every bird suddenly took flight. Leaves danced although there was no wind. The pendant began glowing with a faint blue light. The child stared. "It's warm..." Old Elias closed his eyes. "It has found you." That afternoon curiosity won. Without telling anyone, the child packed a small satchel with bread, a water flask, a blanket, and the silver pendant. "I'll only look," they whispered. "I'll be back before sunset." The path into the Whispering Forest was narrow and overgrown. Sunlight filtered through enormous trees whose branches twisted together high above like the roof of an ancient cathedral. The air felt different. Cooler. Older. Every step seemed to echo. Soon the sounds of the village disappeared. Only the forest remained. Rustling leaves. Flowing streams. Distant birdsong. Then... "...You're walking the wrong way." The child froze. There was no one there. "Down here." Looking around, they spotted a tiny creature sitting comfortably on a moss-covered rock. It was no taller than a rabbit. It had bright emerald-green fur, enormous ears, golden eyes, and a long fluffy tail tipped with silver. The creature crossed its tiny arms. "Took you long enough." The child stared. "You... you can talk?" The creature rolled its eyes dramatically. "Oh dear." "It's another surprised human." "Yes, I talk." "So do badgers." "So do owls." "So do mushrooms, if you know how to listen." The child blinked twice. "Mushrooms?" "Never mind." The creature jumped from the rock. "I'm Bramble." "Official Guide." "Unofficial Hero." "Professional Trouble Avoider." It bowed proudly. The child couldn't help smiling. "I'm—" "I know who you are." "You do?" "Of course." "The forest has been talking about you since last night." The child laughed nervously. "The forest talks?" Bramble looked genuinely confused. "...You humans really stopped listening, didn't you?" Before the child could answer— ROOOOAR! A deep roar shook the forest. Birds exploded into the sky. The ground trembled. Bramble's ears stood straight up. "Oh." "That's... not good." "What was that?" "I was hoping you'd never have to find out." A second roar echoed, closer this time. Trees swayed violently. Something enormous moved through the forest, snapping thick branches as if they were twigs. The child backed away. "Bramble..." "What is it?" The little creature swallowed hard. "...Run." They ran. Roots twisted beneath their feet. Branches whipped through the air. The heavy footsteps behind them grew louder. Boom. Boom. Boom. The forest itself seemed to tremble. Suddenly, the child stumbled over a hidden stone and tumbled down a grassy slope. At the bottom stood an ancient archway covered in glowing blue vines. The silver pendant around their neck shone brighter than ever. A low humming filled the air. Symbols carved into the arch began to glow. Bramble skidded to a stop beside the child, his eyes wide with amazement. "No one has opened this gate in a thousand years..." The vines slowly parted. Beyond them lay a staircase descending into the earth. Cool blue light drifted upward like mist. The roaring stopped. Silence returned. Then, from the darkness below, a calm voice echoed through the chamber. "Welcome... Keeper." The child looked at Bramble. Bramble looked back. "I don't think we're in an ordinary forest anymore."
