The Shadow Hunter

Chapter 4 The sanctuary fell silent. Even the glowing butterflies that drifted around the Heart Tree vanished into the branches as though they sensed the danger. The masked warrior stood perfectly still in the broken doorway. Behind them, shadow creatures poured into the chamber like living smoke. Their glowing crimson eyes scanned every corner of the sanctuary. The child tightened their grip on the silver pendant. "Who... are you?" The warrior tilted their head. "I have had many names." "Today..." "...you may call me the Shadow Hunter." His voice was calm—not angry, not cruel. Simply certain. His gaze settled on the pendant. "So..." "The Heart Tree has truly chosen another Keeper." Lyra stepped forward, raising her crystal staff. "You are not welcome here." The Shadow Hunter sighed. "I did not come for a fight." "I came for the Crystal." "You know I cannot allow that." "I know." For a long moment, no one moved. Then the Shadow Hunter lifted one hand. The shadow creatures charged. "Behind me!" Lyra shouted. She struck the ground with her staff. A brilliant circle of blue light burst across the floor. The first shadow creature leaped into the barrier— WHOOM! It was thrown backward in a shower of sparkling light. Another rushed in. Then another. Within seconds, dozens surrounded the glowing shield. Bramble hid behind a crystal pillar. "I suddenly miss this morning when my biggest problem was finding breakfast." The child almost laughed. Almost. The Shadow Hunter watched quietly. "You still fight with Light Magic." Lyra answered firmly. "As long as hope exists..." "...the light will never fade." The Shadow Hunter slowly drew his sword. Dark crystal reflected the sanctuary's blue glow. "This is why your order disappeared." "You refuse to change." He took one step forward. The barrier trembled. A second step. Cracks spread across the magical shield. Lyra's face grew pale. "Impossible..." The Shadow Hunter stopped only a few steps away. "Magic has rules." "I simply learned them better." With one powerful swing— CRACK! The barrier shattered into thousands of glowing fragments. The sanctuary echoed with the sound of breaking magic. "Run!" Lyra cried. The child grabbed Bramble's paw, and together they sprinted deeper into the sanctuary. Shadow creatures chased them between crystal pillars. They crossed glowing streams and crystal bridges, barely keeping ahead. Suddenly— A tiny blue dragon burst from behind a rock. It was no larger than a puppy. Its wings flapped wildly as it tried to stop. Too late. THUD! It crashed directly into the child. Both tumbled across the grass. "Ouch!" The dragon rubbed its head. "So sorry!" "I didn't see you!" The child blinked. "You can talk too?" The dragon looked offended. "Of course I can!" "What kind of dragon doesn't talk?" Bramble threw up his tiny paws. "Can we discuss dragon language after we survive?" The little dragon looked around. Its cheerful smile disappeared. "Oh..." "Those are Shadow Hunters." "That's bad." "You know them?" "They chased me yesterday." "You escaped?" "I sneezed." "...They got confused." Bramble stared. "...That actually worked?" "It was a very impressive sneeze." Another explosion shook the sanctuary. The Heart Tree glowed brighter. Its crystal leaves rang like tiny bells. Lyra shouted from across the chamber. "Keeper!" "The Heart Tree is calling you!" The child looked toward the enormous crystal tree. Its branches stretched outward. One glowing crystal slowly descended from the highest branch. It floated gently through the air. Straight toward the child. The Shadow Hunter's eyes widened. "No..." "It cannot be." The crystal hovered only inches away. Without thinking, the child reached out. The moment their fingers touched it— The entire sanctuary erupted with dazzling blue light. Wind swirled through the cavern. Every crystal pillar began shining. Ancient runes awakened across the walls. The Heart Tree's roots spread glowing patterns across the ground. The child floated a few centimetres above the floor. A warm voice echoed inside their mind. "Keeper..." "Do not fear the light." Images flashed before their eyes. Seven towering crystals. Seven Keepers. Seven kingdoms. A final vision lingered longer than the others. A hooded figure standing before the Seven Crystals... then one crystal darkening from within. The figure turned— But before the face could be seen— The vision ended. The child landed gently on the ground. The blue crystal now rested in their hands. It pulsed like a heartbeat. The Shadow Hunter lowered his sword. For the first time... He looked uncertain. "So..." "It has truly awakened." Without warning, the entire mountain shook. Dust rained from the ceiling. A deep roar echoed through the sanctuary. Not from outside. From beneath it. The little dragon's golden eyes grew wide. "Oh no..." The child looked at him. "What is it?" The dragon whispered only two words. "It's awake." The floor cracked open. A colossal blue eye slowly opened in the darkness below. It was larger than a wagon wheel. Ancient. Wise. And watching every soul in the sanctuary.
