Chapter 7
The road to Moonbridge wound through rolling green hills, sparkling streams, and fields filled with flowers that shimmered with faint traces of magic.
For three peaceful days, the companions traveled together.
Or at least...
They tried to.
Bramble marched confidently at the front of the group.
"I know this road like the back of my paw."
Ten minutes later...
"We're lost."
Kael folded his arms.
"We're standing beside the same waterfall we passed an hour ago."
Bramble frowned at the waterfall.
"It moved."
"The waterfall moved?"
"Obviously."
The waterfall made a bubbling sound that sounded suspiciously like laughter.
The tiny dragon, Ember, rolled onto the grass laughing.
"I like this waterfall."
Pip, the green parrot, fluttered overhead.
"I've found Moonbridge!"
Everyone looked up hopefully.
"It's that way!"
He pointed east.
Kael raised an eyebrow.
"The sun is setting in that direction."
Pip blinked.
"...Then perhaps I've found the wrong Moonbridge."
The child smiled.
Despite the danger ahead, traveling with these strange companions never felt lonely.
As evening approached, they climbed the last hill.
Beyond it lay a breathtaking sight.
Moonbridge.
Built along the banks of a wide silver river, the town sparkled beneath hundreds of floating lanterns.
An enormous stone bridge arched gracefully across the water, glowing with ancient blue runes.
Colorful banners fluttered from rooftops.
Music drifted through the air.
The market was alive.
"This place is beautiful," whispered the child.
"It has always welcomed travelers," Lyra said softly.
"But never forget..."
"The busiest places often hide the greatest secrets."
The market was unlike anything the child had imagined.
A baker sold bread shaped like dragons.
A blacksmith hammered swords that sang cheerful tunes.
A tiny goblin balanced six hats on his head while shouting,
"Buy one hat, get the second absolutely unnecessary!"
Nearby, a cheerful witch stirred a giant cauldron.
The sign above her stall read:
Laughing Potion — Guaranteed to Make You Giggle!
Ember sniffed the bubbling mixture.
"It smells delicious."
Before anyone could stop him...
He dipped one claw into the potion.
A second later—
"Hic!"
Tiny blue bubbles floated out of his nose.
"Hic!"
Every hiccup produced glowing butterflies.
Children nearby burst into laughter.
Even Kael struggled to hide a smile.
"I don't think dragons are supposed to do that."
"Hic!"
A butterfly landed on Bramble's nose.
He crossed his eyes trying to look at it.
Everyone laughed.
The child wandered through the market, amazed by the sights.
Tiny crystal birds carried messages between shops.
Books flew from shelf to shelf inside a magical bookstore.
A giant turtle patiently pulled a wagon filled with glowing fruit.
Street musicians played enchanted instruments that created colorful ribbons of light with every note.
The world of Aetheria felt endless.
And wonderful.
At the center of the square stood an old fountain.
Its water shimmered like liquid silver.
Carved into its base were seven familiar symbols.
The Seven Crystals.
The child reached out to touch one.
The Blue Crystal around their neck suddenly became warm.
A whisper brushed against their thoughts.
"Danger..."
The child looked around.
Everything seemed normal.
Families laughed.
Merchants bargained.
Children chased glowing butterflies.
Yet...
Someone was watching.
Hidden beneath a dark hood, a stranger stood across the square.
Only a pair of silver eyes could be seen.
The stranger noticed the child looking.
Without a word, they disappeared into the crowd.
The child hurried after them.
"Wait!"
They slipped between busy stalls.
Past the magical bakery.
Past the music stage.
Past the flower market.
Finally...
The stranger stopped in a quiet alley.
"You came alone."
The voice was calm.
Not threatening.
The hood was lowered.
It revealed an elderly woman with silver hair braided down her back and kind amber eyes.
"You received my message," she said.
"You wrote the letter?"
She nodded.
"My name is Mira."
"I once served the Keepers."
Before she could say another word—
BOOM!
An explosion echoed from the market square.
The ground shook violently.
People screamed.
Kael's voice rang out.
"Keeper!"
The child sprinted back toward the square.
Smoke billowed into the sky.
Market stalls had been overturned.
Floating lanterns crashed to the ground.
Shadow creatures burst from the smoke, sending crowds fleeing in every direction.
At the center of the chaos stood a tall figure dressed in dark robes.
Unlike the Shadow Hunter, this stranger wore no mask.
Instead, their face was hidden beneath swirling shadows.
In one hand they held a twisted black staff crowned with a crimson crystal.
The figure laughed.
"So this is where the Keeper hides."
Kael drew his sword.
Lyra raised her crystal staff.
Bramble grabbed a frying pan from a nearby food stall.
Ember puffed out his chest.
"No more tiny fire!"
He inhaled deeply...
And unleashed a blazing stream of brilliant blue flames that swept across the square.
The shadow creatures scattered in panic.
Everyone froze.
Ember blinked in surprise.
"...I did it."
Bramble grinned.
"I think our little dragon just grew up."
The dark-robed figure's laughter faded.
"So..."
"The Guardian Flame has awakened."
The crimson crystal atop the enemy's staff began to pulse with dark energy.
Above Moonbridge, the clear evening sky suddenly darkened.
Lightning flashed across black clouds.
A single raven with glowing red eyes circled overhead before flying north.
Far away, in his frozen fortress, the Hollow King watched through the raven's eyes.
He smiled.
"The game has begun."
